  • In Fast motion estimaion algorithms, they reduce the computational complexity using the assumption that the matching error increases monotonically as the search moves away from the global minimum error In this paper, we first investigate the statistical characteristics of motion vector that the motion vector mostly occures on the side of small MAE (mean absolute error) between the reference search points when the MAE difference of them is large Therefore, we propose a fast motion estimation algorithm using this property and can reduce the number of search points The computer simulation result shows that the proposed method reduces computational complexity compared with conventional fast algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose the removal of search point using motion vector correlation and distance between reference frames in H.264/AVC. We remove the search points in full search method and predictive motion vectors in enhanced predictive zonal search method. Since the probability that the reference frame far from the current frame is selected as the best reference frame is decreased, we apply the weighted average based on distance between the current and reference frame to determine the fianl search range. In general, the size of search range is smaller than initial search range. We reduce motion estimation time using the final search range in full search method. Also, the refinement process is adaptively applied to each reference frame. The proposed methods reduce the computational throughput of full search method by 57.13% and of enhanced predictive zonal search by 14.71% without visible performance degradation.

  • For video compression, we have to consider two performance factors that are the search speed and coded video's quality. In this paper, we propose an enhanced fast block matching algorithm using the spatial correlation of the video sequence and the center-biased characteristic of motion vectors(MV). The proposed algorithm first finds a predicted motion vector from the adjacent macro blocks of the current frame and determines an exact motion vector using the cross pattern and a flat hexagon search pattern. From the performance evaluations, we can see that our algorithm outperforms both the hexagon-based search(HEXBS) and the cross-hexagon search(CHS) algorithms in terms of the search speed and coded video's quality. Using our algorithm, we can improve the search speed by up to 31%, and also increase the PSNR(Peak Signal Noise Ratio) by at most 0.5 dB, thereby improving the video quality.

  • In this paper, we propose multi-frame based super resolution algorithm by using motion vector normalization and edge pattern analysis. Existing algorithms have constraints of sub-pixel motion and global translation between frames. Thus, applying of algorithms is limited. And single-frame based super resolution algorithm by using discrete wavelet transform which robust to these problems is proposed but it has another problem that quantity of information for interpolation is limited. To solve these problems, we propose motion vector normalization and edge pattern analysis for 2*2 block motion estimation. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than other conventional algorithms.

  • In this Paper, we propose an efficient de-interlacing algorithm using temporal and spatial domain information. In the proposed scheme, motion estimation is performed same parity fields, i.e., if current field is even field, reference fields are previous even field and forward even field. And then motion vector refinement is performed to improve the accuracy of motion vectors. In the interpolating step, we use median filter to reduce the interpolation error caused by incorrect motion vector. Simulations conducted for various video sequences have shown the efficiency of the proposed interpolator with significant improvement over previous methods in terms of both PSNR and perceived image quality.

  • In this paper, we propose a digital image stabilization technique using edge detection and Lucas-Kanade optical flow in order to minimize the motion of the shaken image. The accuracy of motion estimation based on block matching technique depends on the size of search window, which results in long calculation time. Therefore it is not applicable to real-time system. In addition, since the size of vector depends on that of block, it is difficult to estimate the motion which is bigger than the block size. The proposed method extracts the trust region using edge detection, to estimate the motion of some critical points in trust region based on Lucas-Kanade optical flow algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed method stabilizes the shaking of motion image effectively in real time.

  • This paper presents a hand motion tracking method for hand gesture interface using a camera in mobile devices such as a smart phone and PDA. When a camera moves according to the hand gesture of the user, global optical flows are generated. Therefore, robust hand movement estimation is possible by considering dominant optical flow based on histogram analysis of the motion direction. A continuous hand gesture is segmented into unit gestures by motion state estimation using motion phase, which is determined by velocity and acceleration of the estimated hand motion. Feature vectors are extracted during movement states and hand gestures are recognized at the end state of each gesture. Support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighborhood classifier, and normal Bayes classifier are used for classification. SVM shows 82% recognition rate for 14 hand gestures.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new hardware architecture for motion estimation (ME) which is the most time-consuming unit among H.264 algorithms and designed to the type of intellectual property (IP). The proposed ME hardware consists of buffer, processing unit (PU) array, SAD (sum of absolute difference) selector, and motion vector (MVgenerator). PU array is composed of 16 PUs and each PU consists of 16 processing elements (PUs). The main characteristics of the proposed hardware are that current and reference frames are re-used to reduce the number of access to the external memory and that there is no clock loss during SAD operation. The implemented ME hardware occupies 3% hardware resources of StatixIII EP3SE80F1152C2 which is a FPGA of Altera Inc. and can operate at up to 446.43MHz. Therefore it can process up to 50 frames of 1080p in a second.

  • In this paper, we propose a Multiresolution Motion Estimation(MRME) adapted to Low-Band-Shift(LBS) method in wavelet domain. To overcome shift-variant property on wavelet coefficients, the LBS was previously proposed. This method which is applied to reference frame in video coding technique, has superior performance in terms of rate-distortion characteristic. However, this method needs more memory and computational complexity. In this paper, The computational complexity of the proposed method(LBS-MRME) is about 15.6% of that of existing method at 3-level wavelet transform. And although it has about 7 times as much as existing method's motion vector since each subband has different motion vector, it decreases motion compensated prediction error by detailed motion estimation, and then has better efficient coding performance. The experimental results with the proposed method showed about 0.3∼11.6% improvement of MAD performance in case of lossless coding, and 0.3∼3.0㏈ improvement of PSNR performance at the same bit rate in case of lossy coding.
