  • This paper introduces a novel and fast synthesizing method for 3D motions of quadrupedal animals that uses only a small set of motion capture data. Unlike human motions, animal motions are relatively difficult to capture. Also, it is a challenge to synthesize continuously changing animal motions in real time because animals have various gait types according to their speed. The algorithm proposed herein, however, is able to synthesize continuously varying motions with proper limb configuration by using only one single cyclic animal motion per gait type based on the biologically driven Froude number. During the synthesis process, each gait type is automatically determined by its speed parameter, and the transition motions, which have not been entered as input, are synthesized accordingly by the optimized asynchronous motion blending technique. At the start time, given the user's control input, the motion path and spinal joints for turning are adjusted first and then the motion is stitched at any speed with proper transition motions to synthesize a long stream of motions.

  • This study suggests a technique to implement the production of animation by blending between key frame animation and motion capture animation through short animation 'Drip.' It reduced the time taken to produce an animation by not only enabling efficient process management through mutual organic connection but also conducting a process of mutually making up for weak points of key frame animation and motion capture animation. Through this, it was intended to be helpful in efficient animation production by overcoming the limitation of key frame animation and motion capture animation and perceiving and applying a complex process.

  • This paper proposes a composition method of mosaic image from the compressed MPEG-2 video stream, in which the displacement between successive frames according to the camera operation is estimated directly from the information involved in the stream. In the proposed method. the approximated optical flow is constructed from motion vectors of macro blocks, and it is used to determine the parameters of the displacements according to the camera operation associated with pan and tilt. The extracted parameters are used to determine the geometric transform of successive video frames in order to construct a mosaic image. The construction of mosaic uses several blending techniques including the one proposed by Nichols in which an analytic weight is used to determine pixel values. Through the experiment, the blending technique based on analytic weights was superior to the others such as averaging and median-based techniques. It provided more smooth changes in background and made use of instantaneous frame information to construct a mosaic. The mosaic in the paper puts the emphasis on the reduction of computation because it is constructed from the motion vectors included in the compressed video without decoding and recalculating exact optical flows. The constructed mosaic can be used in the retrieval of the compressed video as the representative frame of a shot.

  • In this paper we propose an image enhancement technique based on histogram specification method over local overlapping regions referred as Local Histogram Specification. First, both reference and original images are splitted into local regions that each overlaps half of its adjacent regions and general histogram specification method is used between corresponding local regions of reference and original image. However it produces noticeable boundary effects. Linear weighted image blending method is used to reduce this effect in order to make seamless image and we also proposed new technique dealing with over-enhanced contrast areas. We satisfied with our experimental results that showed better enhancement accuracy and less noise amplifications compared to other well-known image enhancement methods. We conclude that the proposed method is well suited for motion detection systems as a responsible part to overcome sudden illumination changes.

  • The techniques, which locate example motions in abstract parameter space and interpolate them to generate new motion with given parameters, are widely used in real-time animation system for its controllability and efficiency However, as the dimension of parameter space increases for more complex control, the number of example motions for parameterization increases exponentially. This paper proposes a method that uses two different parameter spaces to obtain decoupled control over upper-body and lower-body motion. At each frame time, each parameterized motion space produces a source frame, which satisfies the constraints involving the corresponding body part. Then, the target frame is synthesized by splicing the upper body of one source frame onto the lower body of the other. To generate corresponding source frames to each other, we present a novel scheme for time-warping. This decoupled parameterization alleviates the problems caused by dimensional complexity of the parameter space and provides users with layered control over the character. However, when the examples are parameterized based on their upper body's spatial properties, the parameters of the examples are varied individually with every change of its lower body. To handle this, we provide an approximation technique to change the positions of the examples rapidly in the parameter space.

  • This paper presents a motion generation technique for arbitrary morphologies with the user defined correspondences between joints. Users can define the controlling part in the source character and the part to be controlled in the target character in our system. To remove the restriction in the morphology of the target character, we use the pair of example posture sets. In our system, in order to provide the correspondence regardless of the number of joints, the deformed part in the target character is simplified into the direction vector. The final postures are then generated with the weighted sum of the examples. Our experimental results demonstrate that our approach can generate motions for various target characters and can control the user defined joints in real-time.
