  • Fruit piercing moths were collected at every other at orchaed(16.5ha) planted with plum, peach and pear, and surrounded by forest in Gyeongnam province from jun to September in 1987. Four black light (BL) traps were lightened to attract the moths from sunset to sunrise and sweep net was also used to catch the moths on fruit and around fruit trees from 22 to 23 o'clock, 20 minutes per fruit tree species. Forty-one species, including 15 primary piercing species(PPS) and 22 secondary piercing species (SPS), from 3 families were collected and identified as fruit piercing moths. Among them, 16 species are newly recorded as fruit piercing moths in Korea. O. emarginata, L. juno, P. stuposa, C. lata and O. excavata were diminant species of PPS, comprising 86.7% of the whole PPS. Dominant species of SPS were A. ipsilon, M. turca, S. retorata, A. livida and T. oldenlandiae, comprising 80.5% of the whole SPS. The ratios of PPS to the whole fruit piercing moths collected by BL traps and net were sweep 15.2% and 79.7%, repectively. By sweep net L. juno, P. stuposa, and O. emarginata was also captured in a large numbers on peach, C. lata was on plum, and S. retorata was on pear.

  • Present experiment designed for the review of theoretical basis for the inspection system of infected insects by Nosema bombycis. A microporidian N. bombycis, known as the high virulence, produced at the average of 7$\times$108 spores per female moth of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, enabled transovarial tranmission. Detectability of N. bombycis spores in the mass inspection was varied by dillution level, the higher limit of dillution with healthy moths was 1:140 for 100% detection, 1:160 for 99.5%, 1:200 for 99.0%. For an efficient inspection under the microscopic observation (600$\times$), the lower limit of spore concentration was determined as 1, 000, 000 spores/ml, 60-80 moths could be applicable for a maximum sample unit of a lot. Following the present inspection unit conditioned 35 to 40 moths for a lot. N. bombycis spores were easily detectable from the preparation of crude homogenate with 2% KOH, even the step of contrifuge was omitted. The results suggested a new basis of rational mass inspection system of silkworm female moths to save the facilities, labor, and time.

  • The Daehwangjam has excellent marketability and quality. However, precise silkworm breeding data on the recent high-temperature environment is not enough collected, and it is necessary to check whether stable Daewhangjam silkworm egg production was possible in poor environments. In this study, the timing of metamorphosis of the Daewhangjam parents Jam323 and Jam324 silkworms, in an optimal condition and a general condition similar to breeding grounds, was investigated to confirm that appropriate mating was achieved. Surprisingly, a number of female moths were discarded due to the metamorphosis of Jam324 female moths much earlier than Jam323 male moths in either an optimal or a general condition. To improve this, during the Jam324 female pupation period, the mild low-temperature of 15℃ was treated for the pupation period to delay the metamorphosis into female moths. Depending on the treatment period, the metamorphosis of the female pupa was delayed by more than 4 days, allowing normal mating with the Jam323 male moth. The eye pigments in a pupa also slowly accumulated in these treatments. In order to discover the side effects of low-temperature treatments, the voltinism of the Daewhangjam eggs was investigated, but most of them remained univoltine. Taken together, the low-temperature treatment during the female pupation period made it possible to use Jam324 female moths that were should be discarded, which means that stable and efficient management of Daewhangjam egg production is possible.

  • The small-scale dynamic of moth populations in spring was examined in a coniferous forest of southwestern Korea. Moths were collected with one 22-watt light trap for 29 days in April 2007. A total of 450 individuals of 38 species in 5 families were collected. The most abundant species was an epiplemid moth, Epiplema plagifera. The relationship between these dominant moths and their host plants is briefly discussed. We also examined influence of weather factors on the number of species and individuals collected. Multiple regression analyses showed that the two-day temperature difference explained 18% of the variance in the number of species collected, while air and ground temperatures explained 51% of the variance in the log-transformed number of individuals collected. This suggests that temperature affects local population sizes in spring, but variables other than weather may also affect the diversity of local moth populations.

  • On the seventh day of mounting male and feamale cocoons are distinguished. A part of those male and female pupae is irradiated for 40 min. with 1,000r-ray irradiation. Those eggs obtained from the irradiated pupae are divided into six groups of 5, 15, 45, 90, 720 and 2,400 minutes after laying. The cahanges of accid soluble phosphorus in the each group of eggs are as follows. 1. In the control group of the maximum quantity in acid soluble phosphorus was 1,456r/100mg D.P. in the 2,400 minutes group, while the minimum quantity was 1,233r/100mg D.P. in the 720 minutes group. 2. In the mated group of *irradiated female moths and control male moths, the quantity of acid soluble phoshorus was small as compared with the control group in the five minute group of 1,288r/100mg D.P. and in the 15 minutes group of 1,299r/100mg D.P. while the quantity increased to 1,484r/100mg D.P. in the 45 minutes group. The quantity began to decrease again to 1,400r/100mg D.P. in the 2,400 minutes group which was smaller than that of the control group. The quantity was slightly small in the silkworm eggs laid in the early stage when compared with that of mated group of *irradiated male moths and control female moths. Both groups showed the larger quantity in the 720 minutes group than that of the control group. The quantity of acid soluble phosphorus in the mated group of control female moths .and *irradiated male moths was larger in variation than in the mated group of control male moths and *irradiated female moths. 3. In the mated group of *irradiated male and female moths the largerst quantity was 1,760r/100ms D.P. in 2,400 minutes group and second was 1,736r/100mg D.P. in 90 minutes group, and third was 1,288r/100mg D. P., in 5 minutes group. Generally the quantity was small in silkworm eggs laid by the irradiated one in the early stage than the control group, but in the later period of egg the quantity began to increase more than that of control group.

  • An outbreak of dermatosis occurred at a machine manufacture factory in Kyongju on Aug 1995. Authors conducted a questionnaire ,survey among 92 workers in the factory and a dermatologist examined their skin lesions. Authors also collected moths and identified them. The results are as follows; 1. Forty-two cases of dermatosis were identified with attack rate of 45.7%. Attack rate was not different by company, age, sex, educational level and duration of employment. Attack rate was 47.8% among productive workers, 25.0% among clerical workers and 100.0 % among patrolmen. 2. Two cases among 42 dermatosis cases and three subjects among 50 non-cases had a history of same dermatosis last year. Four of dermatosis cases had a history of dermatosis among their family members. 3. Skin lesions of the cases were scattered or grouped rice-sized erythematous papules or vesicles. Duration of dermatosis from the onset to the time of survey was from one day to more than 30 days. The most frequent site of skin lesion was the arms(81.0 %), and it was also observed at the neck(47.6 %), abdomen(45.2 %), chest(42.9 %), legs(38.1 %) and back(35.7 %). Skin lesion was aggravated with sweating(31.0 %), after shower(16.7 %) and with scratching(11.9 %). 4. Moths were collected and identified as Euproctis subflava (Bremer). Many poisonous stings were observed on their wngs which is harmful to human. 5. Contact with moths' wing droppings to two authors on thier forearms for provocation resulted in severe immediate pain followed by prolonged pruritus. Erythematous macules quickly appeared and succeeded by firm wheal-like red papules. Authors thought that the outbreak of dermatosis was brought about by Euproctis subflava (Bremer). Further studies on the factors contributing to the prosperity of the moths in this area are needed.

  • A distribution status of host plants for fruit-piercing moths was surveyed in Kocksung fruit growing area of Chonnam province during June to October, 1975. The results were summarized as follows; Main host plants of fruit·piercing larvae Smilax china L., Allizzia zulibrissim Dura, Cocculus trilobus Dc., Thalictrum aquilegifolium L., and Pterocarya rhoifolia Sieb & Zucc. Pterocarya rhoifolia Sieb & Zucc. were found to be distributed at mountain regions over 500m above sea level, while the other host plants were found to be distributed with in loom to 300m above sea level The moths was found from June 25th to Oct. 4th. Maximum emergence of the moths on plum an8 peach were about July 18th and on the grapes tree about August 31th. The moths collected from June 25th to Oct.4th were 17 spcies. Dermaleipa zuno Dalman $(35.7\%)$, Oraesia emaginata Fabriciul$(17.7\%)$, Oraesia excavata Butler $(12.9\%)$, Adrias tyramus amurensis Staduinger$(9.1\%)$, were collected much more than any other species; They accounted for approximately$70\%$ of total moths collected. In regards to the sugar contents of peach and plum, it was observed that the more the sugar concentrated, the more the fruits damaged. but the acid value of fruits had not shown any significant relationship with their attractants.
