Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Maternal Care Program(MCP)-carried out by trained home care nurses on self-efficacy and postpartum depression in mothers with preterm babies. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study comparing the effects of an MCP on self-efficacy and postpartum depression before Participants were 34 mothers who were referred to the home care nursing center of the C University Hospital in Seoul from April 8 2014 to January 12 2015. Results: The average self-efficacy score was 97.24 points before and 123.26 points after receiving the program, showing a significant increase of 26.03 points (p<.001). Postpartum depression scores were 8.65 points before the program and 5.56 points after, showing a significant decrease of 3.09 points (p<.001). Conclusions: The normal development of preterm babies was confirmed-through regular physical examinations in the MCP. Professional services were provided by-education and consultation on problems related to child-rearing and health to deal with psychological and social problems as well as physical care to mothers by trained home care nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an empowerment program as a nursing intervention for mothers who care for a child with cerebral palsy at home and to determine the effects of the program on those mothers' self efficacy, coping behavior and burden. Method: An non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. An Empowerment program was developed based on Dunst & Trivette's model. Using the program, the study was carried out from Dec. 13, 2003 to Jan. 17, 2004, mothers whose children, aged 1 to 6, were outpatients of the Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine, at P University Hospital or registered at educational institutions for early disabled children. The experimental group of subjects were included in the new empowerment program which was held for two and half hours every week for 6 times. Results: After treatment with the Empowerment Program, the experimental group was found to be significantly increased in score for self efficacy(t=4.55, p<.01), coping behavior(t=5.54, p<.001), objective burden(t=-3.96, p<.01) and subjective burden(t=-5.05, <.01), in comparison to the control group. Conclusion: The Empowerment Program is very effective in increasing self efficacy and coping behavior of mothers having a child with cerebral palsy and decreasing their burden. Finally, this study would recommend that an empowerment program should be extended to community facilities such as public health offices and welfare centers.
The present study investigated the developmental pattern of Korean mothers' depressive symptoms from a week prior to birth through four months postpartum in a nationally represented survey sample in Korea, using a Latent Growth Curve model. Mother-reported four factors-maternal self-efficacy in parenting, father's participation in childcare, a number of hours mothers worked per week, child's emotional temperament-were examined as the predictors of depressive symptoms over time in the context of Korean culture. Effects of maternal depressive trajectories on their infants' developmental outcomes at the first year were also examined. Findings were as follows: First, mothers' reports of depressive symptoms decreased at the first month after birth and then increased again during the first 4 months postpartum. Second, mothers' perceived low spousal involvement in childcare, low parental self-efficacy, and their infants' difficult temperament at four-month old had significantly positive relations to the initial level of maternal depressive symptoms whereas the low spousal involvement in childcare and low maternal self-efficacy factors significantly predicted the changes of trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms. Third, the trajectories, in turn, predicted warm and responsive maternal parenting style at the fourth month. Subsequently, the parenting style had a significant longitudinal impact on the development of children's communication, problem-solving, and personal-social abilities. Based on these findings, awareness, preventive and interventional programs might be built to facilitate Korean mothers suffering severe postpartum depressive symptoms and further promote optimal early development of Korean children.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and test effects of a child health management program based on cooperative learning for mothers of preschool children. Methods: For this quasi-experimental study, a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Outcome measures were level of child health management self-efficacy, child health management practices, child's health behavior. Participants were 55 mothers (experimental group 28, control group 27). The program was composed of 6 categories of home health management for preschool children, and provided for three 120-minute sessions. Data were collected from September to October, 2015, at 3 times: baseline, 3 and 6 weeks after beginning the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: After 3 and 6 weeks, there were significant differences between the two groups in child health management self-efficacy (F=18.33, p<.001), child health management practices (F=8.91, p<.001), and child's health behavior (F=9.91, p<.001). Conclusion: Study findings indicate that this child health management program based on cooperative learning is effective and can be recommended as an intervention for mothers of preschool children. It will contribute to enhanced child health management self-efficacy and health management practices and improved child's health behavior.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among preschoolers' smartphone addiction tendency, problem behaviors, and parenting efficacy of the mothers of these children. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used with self-administered questionnaires. A total of 83 mothers of preschoolers aged 4-6 years and their preschool teachers from a kindergarten participated in the study. Results: Mean daily time spent by the preschoolers on smartphones was about 45 minutes/day. About 40% spent more than 60 minutes/day on smartphones. The majority (69.8%) used smartphones without adult supervision. The level of smartphone addiction tendency among the preschoolers was $1.52{\pm}0.45$ on a 4-point scale. Preschoolers whose mothers use smartphones for more than 60 minutes/day showed a higher level of smartphone addiction tendency than preschoolers whose mothers use smartphones for less than 60 minutes/day. Also smartphone addiction tendency among preschoolers had a positive correlation with hyperactive-distractible behavior (r=.228, p=.038) and a negative correlation with parenting efficacy of their mothers (r=-.299, p=.006). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that preschooler's smartphone addiction tendency is significantly associated with hyperactive-distractible behaviors of the children and low parenting efficacy among their mothers. Therefore well-designed care plans for these populations should be provided to decrease smartphone addiction tendency.

Purpose: This study was done to investigate the factors associated with a mothers' caring behavior in health promotion of children with disabilities. Methods: Data were collected by using self-reported questionnaires from 371 mothers who had a 3-12 year old child with a disability from July 14 to 31, 2008. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with the SPSS program. Results: There were significant differences on the mothers' caring behavior according to children's negative and hyperactive behavior, mothers' perceived burden, parenting efficacy, and social support. Children's characteristics explained 5.1% of mothers' caring behavior. The power of explanation ($R^2$) was 16.6% by adding mother's characteristics including mother's job, burden, parenting efficacy, satisfaction and stigma, and increased to 23.5% by adding social support. Conclusion: These results showed that mothers' caring behavior for their children's health promotion could be influenced by children's behavior problems, mothers' perception of burden, parenting efficacy, and social support. It suggests that health promotion programs for children with disabilities should focus on lowering subjective burden and enhancing mother's efficacy as a type of social support.
This study explored the effects of parenting efficacy and parental role satisfaction on the life-satisfaction of employed and unemployed mothers. The 527 mothers(234 employed, and 277 unemployed), with a child under 7 years old, were selected for this study. The results were as follows. First, employment had significant correlations with several factors, including the number of children, family income, educational level of parents, parent-child relations, preparedness for parental role conflict, and life-satisfaction. Second, for employed mothers, life-satisfaction had positive relationships with various factors, including family income, fathers' educational level, parenting efficacy, and parental role satisfaction; whereas, that of unemployed mothers had positive relationships with parenting efficacy, and parental role satisfaction. Third, for employed mothers, life-satisfaction was affected by several factors, such as family income, parental role satisfaction, parent-child relations, and preparedness for parental role conflict; however, unemployed mothers were affected by the number of children, the fathers' educational level, and self-confidence relating to the parental role, general satisfaction, and preparedness for parental role conflict.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing mothers' intention to vaccinate their elementary-school sons against human papillomavirus (HPV). Methods: The participants were 151 mothers of fourth- to sixth-grade boys at three elementary schools in Daejeon, Korea. The data were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 25.0. Descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, the Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis were used. Results: The mothers' score for intention to vaccinate their sons against HPV was 5.04 out of 7. Self-efficacy (β=.60, p<.001) and subjective norms towards HPV vaccination (β=.30, p<.001) were significant factors influencing mothers' intention to vaccinate their elementary-school sons against HPV. These factors accounted for 81.0% of HPV vaccination intention among mothers (F=160.84, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that to increase the HPV vaccination rate for elementary-school boys, it is necessary to develop intervention strategies to improve mothers' self-efficacy and subjective norms towards HPV vaccination and to verify the effects of those strategies. This research provides a foundation for designing interventions to increase the HPV vaccination rate of elementary-school boys.
This study investigated sex differences in children's self-efficacy and causal relationships between children's self-efficacy and home environment. The home environment factors included mother's efficacy, marital satisfaction, child rearing attitudes, and socio-economic status. The subjects were 491 fifth and sixth grade children and their mothers. The data were analyzed by t-test using the SAS $PC^+$ program and covariance structural analysis using the PC-LISREL VI. The results showed that there were no sex differences in children's global self-efficacy level, but there were sex differences in some subfactors. Furthermore, we found that the same causal model appears for both sexs in the relationship between home environment and children's self-efficacy. That is, socio-economic status of the home and mother's psychological factors influenced mother's attitudes for child rearing which had a direct impact on children's self-efficacy.
This study was conducted to determine which variables of interest could be used to predict the development of infants. The variables of interest in this study were demographic variables regarding to the infants and mothers, maternal knowledge of infant development, maternal self-efficacy, maternal parenting stress, and infant development. The participants consisted of 252 infant-mother pairs and all infants included in this study were 15 months to 36 months of age. The development of Infants was assessed by classroom teachers. Data regarding the mothers’' demographic information, maternal knowledge of infant development, maternal self-efficacy, and maternal stress were gathered by maternal self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t tests, and regression analyses. The primary results demonstrated that family income, maternal infant knowledge, and maternal parenting stress were predictive of the infant development. In addition, different patterns in the results of the stepwise multiple regression were observed among the infant’'s of different age. Implications for research and practice were discussed along with the results of study.
