This study analyzed the relationship between mother-child communication and the self-concept of young children. The subjects were 93 three-, four-, and five-year-old kindergarten children and their mothers in the city of Chunju. The self-concept test, mother-child communication inventory for children and the mother-child communication questionnaire for mothers were used. The data were analyzed by T-test, General Linear Models analysis, Duncan's Multiple Range test, Paired T-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The major findings were that (1) the children perceived mother-child communication more intensively than mothers, (2) the more positive communication the children perceived they had with their mothers, the higher their self-concept, (3) the self-concept of 5-year-olds was more highly correlated with perception about mother-child communication than the self-concept of the younger children, and (4) boys' self-concept was more highly correlated with perceived mother-child communication than girls'.
Objective: This study examined the association between mother-child communication and preschool children's peer competence mediated by ego resiliency Methods: The data from 318 preschool age children and their mothers in Seoul and Gyung-Gi province were used for this study. Mothers reported mother-child communication using three subscales from the revised parent-child communication inventory(Barnes & Oslom, 1982). This study used four subscales from the Korea Personality Inventory for Children (KPI-C)in order to calculate children's ego resiliency and used six subscales from the Child Behavior Scales(Ladd & Profile, 1996). The data were analyzed using Multiple Regression in SPSS 19.0. Results: Positive mother-child communication predicted a higher level of children's ego resiliency and peer competence. Ego resiliency fully mediated the association between mother-child communication and prosocial competence, rejection against peers and insecurity. And positive mother-child communication predicted lower levels of children's aggression, dissociality and irritability. Its association was also mediated by ego resiliency. Conclusion/Implications: These findings indicated that a mother's positive communication with their child would enhance children's ego resiliency and peer competence in preschool children. Thus, the efforts to facilitate parents' positive communication skills in parent education can be promising for preschool children's positive development.

This study explored the effects of maternal ambivalence over emotional expressiveness (AEE) and mother-adolescent communication on adolescent depression (depressed affect, positive affect, somatic symptoms and activity inhibition, interpersonal difficulties). Data were taken from 233 middle school students (128 boys, 105 girls) and their mothers. Regression analyses showed varying gender differences in the relationships among these variables. Boys with high maternal AEE had lower positive affect, and higher depressive affect, somatic symptoms and activity inhibition, and interpersonal difficulties, whereas girls' moods were not influenced by maternal AEE. In addition, boys with problems in mother-dolescent communication exhibited lower positive affect, higher depressed affect and interpersonal difficulties, but open communication was not related to any depressive symptoms. The mother-adolescent communication type did not appear to be associated with depression in girls either. Both boys and girls both had less open communication and more problem communication with mothers experiencing high AEE. Problem communication with mothers partially mediated the relationship between maternal AEE and interpersonal difficulties in boys only. Examination of maternal ambivalence over emotional expressiveness provides a deeper context for our understanding of negative family communication patterns and the psychological consequences, especially in mother-adolescent boy dyads.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between maternal education level, social support, attribution, mother-child communication and children's social competence. The major findings of this study were as follows; (1) The higher maternal education level and the higher internal attribution were, the more negative mother-child communication was. (2) The higher maternal education level is, the higher perceived social support is, and the more open-mined/positive mother-child communication is, the higher children's initiative, competence and sociability. Also, the more mother attribute children's behavior internally, the lower the children's competence is.
This study examined the effects of mother's facilitative communication and child's emotional intelligence on social competence. Subjects were 474 students in the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ grades of two elementary schools located in Seoul. Data were analyzed by the SAS statistics program. Findings were that mother's facilitative communication has an effect on child's social competence and on emotional intelligence. Higher perception of child's own emotional ability was associated with higher sociability, social participation and leadership. Increased perception of the emotional ability of others was associated with higher sociability, interpersonal adjustment, social participation, leadership, and popularity.
The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of mother-adolescent communication time on the relationship between maternal meta-emotion philosophy, adolescent psychological adjustment and depression. The participants for this study comprised 181 first and second grade high school students and their mothers, residing in Seoul. The results of the analyses indicated that, (a) maternal disapproving is negatively correlated to adolescents' positive world views, and that maternal laissez-faire is also negatively correlated to adolescents' emotional responsiveness. However, a positive correlation is revealed between maternal emotion-coaching and adolescents' positive self-esteem. (b) It is evident that adolescents' emotional responsiveness is influenced by maternal laissez-faire, and that adolescents' positive self-esteem is influenced by emotion-coaching. It also indicated that mother-adolescent communication time is influenced by dismissing as well as laissez-faire meta-emotion philosophy. (c) It revealed that mother-adolescent communication time, in part, has a meaningful moderating effect on the relationship between meta-emotion philosophy and adolescent depression. Therefore, the present study indicates that even if maternal disapproving, laissez-faire, or dismissing is practiced, adolescent depression levels decrease as mother-adolescent time lengthens.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the concept of Mother-Child Interaction (MCI). Methods: The concept analysis method described by Walker & Avant (2005) was used. Results: The attributes of MCI were as follows; 1) MCI involves positive or negative affective and verbal communication. 2) MCI involves mother, child, and dyadic activity. 3) MCI involves sensitivity, responsiveness, and child developmental stimulation. 4) MCI is reciprocal, goal-oriented partnership process. The antecedents of MCI are need for goal attainment, relationship, and child development (cognitive, physical, emotional, and social). The consequences of MCI are goal attainment, promotion of mother-child relationship, and promotion of child development. Conclusion: MCI is a reciprocal, goal-oriented partnership process and is an important concept in child development and health. Appropriate instruments to operationalize the concept need to be developed.
