The results were as follows: First, the degree of mother-adolescent conflict perceived by adolescents was low in general, but high in homework and academic achievement. Second, no sex difference was found in the degree of mother-adolescent conflict. Third, the mother-adolescent conflict was not significantly related to both of adolescent's physical maturation and mother's self-esteem. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship mother-adolescent communication and adolescents' alienation in both single mother-headed family and two-parent family. The subjects were 548 middle and high school students who were 82 single mother-headed family's adolescents and 466 two-parent family's adolescents in Keoungbok. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, t-test, standard multiple- and hierarchical multiple regression(using SPSS 12.1). Major findings were as follows: (1) The single mother-headed family's adolescents were perceived less positive mother-adolescent communication and higher alienation than two-parent family's adolescents. (2) The adolescents' alienation was associated with mother-adolescent communication in both single mother-headed and two-parent family. The less positive parent-adolescent communication, the higher adolescents' alienation. (3) The family structure(single mother-headed or two-parent) was a significant predictor of adolescents' alienation. But when the effect of mother-adolescent communication was controlled, the effect of the family structure became non-significant.

  • Objective: The main purpose of this study was to examine the direct and indirect effects of parent-adolescent communication (through adolescent optimism) on adolescent conflict-coping styles. Methods: A total of 337 high school students participated in this study. They completed questionnaires about communications with their parents and their own optimism and conflict-coping styles. Data were analyzed using t-tests, correlations, and SEM. Results: Neither father- nor mother-adolescent communication had direct effects on adolescent conflict-coping styles. However, mother-adolescent communication had an indirect effect on conflict-coping styles, mediated by adolescent optimism. Adolescents who had open communication with mothers displayed higher levels of optimism, which led to more positive conflict-coping styles. In addition, multigroup analyses revealed that there were significant gender differences in direct and indirect effects. For boys, mother-adolescent communication directly influenced adolescent conflict-coping styles; however, father-adolescent communication did not directly or indirectly affect adolescent conflict-coping styles. For girls, neither father- nor mother-adolescent communication had direct effects on conflict-coping styles; only optimism had a significant effect on conflict-coping styles. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that communication with mothers and fathers have different effects on adolescents' conflict-coping styles. These findings have implications for future research and practice by emphasizing the importance of parent-adolescent communication and optimism in designing conflict-coping programs for adolescents.

  • This study explored the effects of maternal ambivalence over emotional expressiveness (AEE) and mother-adolescent communication on adolescent depression (depressed affect, positive affect, somatic symptoms and activity inhibition, interpersonal difficulties). Data were taken from 233 middle school students (128 boys, 105 girls) and their mothers. Regression analyses showed varying gender differences in the relationships among these variables. Boys with high maternal AEE had lower positive affect, and higher depressive affect, somatic symptoms and activity inhibition, and interpersonal difficulties, whereas girls' moods were not influenced by maternal AEE. In addition, boys with problems in mother-dolescent communication exhibited lower positive affect, higher depressed affect and interpersonal difficulties, but open communication was not related to any depressive symptoms. The mother-adolescent communication type did not appear to be associated with depression in girls either. Both boys and girls both had less open communication and more problem communication with mothers experiencing high AEE. Problem communication with mothers partially mediated the relationship between maternal AEE and interpersonal difficulties in boys only. Examination of maternal ambivalence over emotional expressiveness provides a deeper context for our understanding of negative family communication patterns and the psychological consequences, especially in mother-adolescent boy dyads.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of mother-adolescent communication time on the relationship between maternal meta-emotion philosophy, adolescent psychological adjustment and depression. The participants for this study comprised 181 first and second grade high school students and their mothers, residing in Seoul. The results of the analyses indicated that, (a) maternal disapproving is negatively correlated to adolescents' positive world views, and that maternal laissez-faire is also negatively correlated to adolescents' emotional responsiveness. However, a positive correlation is revealed between maternal emotion-coaching and adolescents' positive self-esteem. (b) It is evident that adolescents' emotional responsiveness is influenced by maternal laissez-faire, and that adolescents' positive self-esteem is influenced by emotion-coaching. It also indicated that mother-adolescent communication time is influenced by dismissing as well as laissez-faire meta-emotion philosophy. (c) It revealed that mother-adolescent communication time, in part, has a meaningful moderating effect on the relationship between meta-emotion philosophy and adolescent depression. Therefore, the present study indicates that even if maternal disapproving, laissez-faire, or dismissing is practiced, adolescent depression levels decrease as mother-adolescent time lengthens.
