The purpose of this study was to investigate mothers' reactions to their children's negative emotions. The subject were 145 children(three to six-year-olds) and the instruments were Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale by Eisenberg(1992) and Temperament Rating Scale by Chun(1992). The main results were as follows; First, mothers, in general, used more positive reactions than negative reactions when their children showed negative emotions. Mothers' education, job, family type and income affected mothers' type of reactions to their children's negative emotions. Mothers' reactions to their children's negative reaction emotions were associated with their children's temperament but not with their children's age, sex and birth order.
Purpose: The purposes of this descriptive survey study were to describe postpartum depression level and to identify the influence of postpartum depression on maternal role confidence, parenting stress and infant temperament, in order to develop a base for nursing intervention programs for mothers who have postpartum depression. Method: Data were collected from 183 mothers of infants who visited one public health center in Goyang city. The instrument used for this study was a self-report questionnaire to identify the postpartum depression (BDI), maternal role confidence, parenting stress (PSI) and infant temperament (WBL). Results: Of the mothers 42.1% were in the normal range for postpartum depression, 33.3% in the mild group and 24.6% were in the moderate to severe group. There were significant differences in parenting stress, and infant temperament according to level of postpartum depression. There were correlations between maternal role confidence (r=-0.13), infant temperament (r=-0.20), parenting stress (r=0.51) and postpartum depression, and weak negative correlation between parenting stress and infant temperament (r=-0.30). Conclusion: Postpartum depression in the infant period when the mother's role is very important and the effect is not only on the mother's role but also on the infant's growth. It is essential to assess and provide immediate care to mothers who have postpartum depression.
Mothers of 113 Korean toddlers completed Toddler Behavior Assessment Questionnaire(TBAQ) and Child Rearing Practice Report(CRPR). Observations of mother-child dyads in novel situations involving unfamiliar settings and adults assessed child's behavioral inhibition. Nonsocial inhibition were measured by the amount of time each child spent in physical contact with his/her mother in free-play episodes. Adult-social inhibition was based on child's behavior when an unfamiliar adult requested that the child approach her as she presented them with toys or activities. Results showed that TBAQ Social Fearfulness was positively associated with nonsocial and adult-social inhibition. TBAQ Pleasure was correlated negatively and TBAQ Anger Proneness positively correlated with adult-social inhibition. An interaction effect showed that child's social fearfulness and mother's overprotective behaviors affected adult-social inhibition. The regression model explained 31% of the variance.
Subjects were 78 12- to 35- month old infants, their mothers, and their teachers. Instruments included the Revised Toddler Temperament Questionnaire(Y. H. Choi 1990) and the Assessment Profile for Early Childhood Programs(M. K. Hong 1997; S. K. Kim 1999). There was no significant difference in perceptions of infant temperament between mothers and teachers. Infant-mother interaction differed by infant temperament in that mothers had high scores with easy infants but low scores with difficult children. On the other hand teachers maintained high interactions with difficult infants in the case of infant's rhythmicity. Infant-teacher interaction correlated with such teacher variables as teacher-infant ratio, teachers' academic backgrounds and working hours.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of children's temperament and mothers' child rearing attitude on social competence of children. The subjects were 256 children(4- to 6-year-olds) who participated in Chun's substudy I (1992). Cluster analysis and two-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data. The instruments were the Temperament Rating Scale, Mother's Child Rearing Attitude Scale, and Kohn's Social Competence Scale. The results showed that there were significant social competence differences by temperament and child rearing attitudes. Interaction effects were found for boys in the 4- and 5-year-old groups. The main implications were confirmation of the validity of the "goodness of fit" concept and of the typology of Korean children's temperament.
Prior studies on child development have focused mainly on environmental variables including mother variations. However, several studies proved that child variables, especially inherited temperament, influence or change the environment. The current study investigates the temperament of 5 - to 8 - month - old infants. One hundred and forty-three mothers of the infants responded to the RITQ that was devised by Carey and McDevitt (1978). The RITQ examined 9 temperamental categories. Based on the score, the subjects were divided into five subgroups-Difficult, Slow-to-Warm-Up, Intermediate High, Intermediate-Low, and Easy. The important findings are as following : (1) There were significant sex differences. Females appeared to have significantly more representation in the slow-to-warm-up, intermediate-high, and intermediate-low groups. There were more males in the easy group. In the comparison of the two sexes as to the mean score in the nine categories males were found to be more approaching, less intensive, positive mood, and highly distractible. (2) Infants' temperament was not related to the mothers' education level and their work status. (3) The mothers' global ratings were consistent with subgroup temperament characteristics.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of maternal perception of children's temperament on parenting stress. The subjects of this study were 303 mothers of four to six-year-old. Evaluations of Parent and Teacher temperament questionnaire for Children 3-7 years of age(Tomas, Chess, & Kom, 1977)(korean version) was used to measure children's temperament, and PDH(Parenting Daily Hassles) was used to measure maternal perception of parenting stress. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Peasons's Correlation and multiple regression analysis and Duncan test for post test by SPSS WIN program. The results of this study were as follows; First, the average level of maternal perception of children's temperament was the highest in the category of adaptability and the lowest in the category of threshold of responsiveness. Second, maternal perception of children's temperament was significantly different according to children's sex. Boys were perceived higher than girls for the category of activity level. Third, the degree of daily hassles was explained by adaptability, the quality of mood, and activity level relatively, while the intensity of parenting stress could be predicted orderly by adaptability, threshold of responsiveness, attention span & persistence, regularity, and activity level. Fourth, mother's daily hassles was explained 22% valiance by children's temperament such as adaptability, the quality of mood, and activity level. Future research should be done to identify the interaction of temperamental factors.
Objective: This study examined the moderating effect of young children's temperament on the relationship between maternal anxiety and overprotection. Methods: A total of 250 mothers with 5-year-old children responded to online survey questionnaires, which included questions about maternal anxiety, overprotection, and their children's temperament. Results: The results of the study revealed several important findings. First, maternal anxiety had a positive correlation to the overall level of overprotection and all sub-factors. The correlation between young children's temperament and maternal overprotection had different results depending on the sub-factors of overprotection. Second, there was a significant moderating effect of young children's temperament on the relationship between maternal anxiety and overprotection. That is, When the reactivity of a child was low, the positive effect of maternal anxiety on maternal overprotection was greater. Looking at the sub-factors of overprotection, only reactive temperament showed a significant moderating effect in the relationship between maternal anxiety and intrusive overprotection. On the relationship between maternal anxiety and permissive overprotection, reactivity and adaptability had significant moderating effects. Conclusion/Implications: This study showed that mother's overprotection was associated with varying levels of their own anxiety and children's temperament. These findings offer basic knowledge for development of a program for improving parenting behaviors.
The purpose of this study was to investigate which variables predicted preschoolers' pro-social behavior. Subjects consisted of 250 preschooler-mother pairs; children were 3 to 6 years of age Children's emotional intelligence and pro-social behavior were assessed by classroom teachers. Data on the mothers' socialization beliefs and strategies as well as children's temperament were gathered through maternal self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation and regression analyses. Results showed that children's temperament (withdrawal predisposition) and emotional intelligence (self emotional expression) predicted children's pro-social behavior. Mothers' perceptions of the importance of pro-social behavior correlated negatively with children's pro-social behavior.
The purpose of the present study was to classify the attachment to mothers of kindergarten children based on a system for classifying attachment organization developed by Main and Cassidy(1988) and to examine the relationship of children's temperament with attachment. 32 children and their mothers were observed and videotaped in the strange situation. Mothers were administered the children's temperament questionnaire revised by Chun (1992). The data were analysed by t-test. The results showed similarity between the attachment classifications of Main and Cassidy (1988) and those of Korean children. These results can be considered partial validation of Main and Cassidy's classification system for the measurement of the attachment of 5-to 6-year-old Korean children. Children's temperament has significant correlation to the security of attachment.
