  • This paper proposes a motphological fast reconstructive filter (FRF) using up/down sampling techniques for reconstructive opening and closing, and a parallel structure for fast multiresolution decomposition. Compuer simulation shows that, compared with the conventional RF, the proposed FRF can reduce the processing time up to 8 times while it maintains a similar performance in reconstructed shapes. Further reduction in the decomposition time achieved by the paralellized algorithm combined with the FRF, which can be applied in areas such as defect detection, image segmentation, pattern recognition, etc.

  • In this paper, crack detection technique of concrete bridge is proposed robust against shadow and noise. Our technique consists of two steps. In the first step, crack candidate region is detected by preprocessing. Preprocessing techniques such as median filter, isolated point filter and morphological techniques, use utilized for detection of crack candidate regions. In the final step, crack is detected from crack candidate region by considering any connectivity between cracks. By experimental results, performance is improved 6.8% over the existing method.

  • In this paper, we present visual sensing techniques that can be used to teach a robot using a laser pointer. The light spot of an off-the-shelf laser pointer is detected and its movement is tracked on consecutive images of a camera. The three-dimensional position of the spot is calculated using stereo cameras. The light spot on the image is detected based on its color, brightness, and shape. The detection results in a binary image, and morphological processing steps are performed on the image to refine the detection. The movement of the laser spot is measured using two methods. The first is a simple method of specifying the region of interest (ROI) centered at the current location of the light spot and finding the spot within the ROI on the next image. It is assumed that the movement of the spot is not large on two consecutive images. The second method is using a Kalman filter, which has been widely employed in trajectory estimation problems. In our simulation study of various cases, Kalman filtering shows better results mostly. However, there is a problem of fitting the system model of the filter to the pattern of the spot movement.

  • This paper presents an effective method to segment objects from the ultrasound medical image which is inherently corrupted by speckle noise. In order to reduce the speckle noise morphological opening was used as preprocessing. For the preprocessed image, sample variance of neighborhood pixels is to be computed to classify where the pixel is located on the edge region or homogeneous region. Then pseudomedian filtering with different window size is taken according to the region classified, named adaptive pseudomedian filter. Various experimental results were presented to prove superiority of the proposed filter.

  • The R wave of QRS complex is the most prominent feature in ECG because of its specific shape; therefore it is taken as a reference in ECG feature extraction. But R wave detection suffers from the fact that frequency bands of the noise/other components such as P/T waves overlap with that of QRS complex. ECG signal processing must consider efficiency for hardware and software resources available in processing for miniaturization and low power. In other words, the design of algorithm that exactly detects QRS region using minimal computation by analyzing the person's physical condition and/or environment is needed. Therefore, efficient QRS detection based on SOM(Subtractive Operation Method) is presented in this paper. For this purpose, we detected R wave through the preprocessing method using morphological filter, empirical threshold, and subtractive signal. Also, we applied dynamic backward searching method for efficient detection. The performance of R wave detection is evaluated by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate the average of 99.41% in R wave detection.

  • QRS detection of ECG is the most popular and easy way to detect cardiac-disease. But it is difficult to analyze the ECG signal because of various noise types. Also in the healthcare system that must continuously monitor people's situation, it is necessary to process ECG signal in realtime. In other words, the design of algorithm that exactly detects QRS wave using minimal computation and classifies PVC by analyzing the persons's physical condition and/or environment is needed. Thus, efficient QRS detection and PVC classification based on profiling method is presented in this paper. For this purpose, we detected QRS through the preprocessing method using morphological filter, adaptive threshold, and window. Also, we applied profiling method to classify each patient's normal cardiac behavior through hash function. The performance of R wave detection, normal beat and PVC classification is evaluated by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The achieved scores indicate the average of 99.77% in R wave detection and the rate of 0.65% in normal beat classification error and 93.29% in PVC classification.

  • We propose a new fast, algorithm which is used for detecting frontal face in the frequency domain based on human skin-color using OCT coefficient of dynamic image compression and skin color information. The region where each pixel has a value of skin-color were extracted from U and V value based on DCT coefficient obtained in the process of Image compression using skin-color map in the Y, U, V color space A morphological filter and labeling method are used to eliminate noise in the resulting image We propose the algorithm to detect fastly human face that estimate the directional feature and variance of luminance block of human skin-color Then Extraction of face was completed adaptively on both background have the object analogous to skin-color and background is simple in the proposed algorithm The performance of face detection algorithm is illustrated by some simulation results earned out on various races We confined that a success rate of 94 % was achieved from the experimental results.

  • Air filters are being used in countless places from industrial sites to everyday life. The spread of the COVID-19 virus, which started in 2019, is disrupting people's daily lives, and the importance of air filters as a basic means to prevent the spread of these diseases is further highlighted. In this study, the purpose was to develop another type of air filter media with excellent barrier properties that can replace PP meltblown nonwoven fabrics widely used commercially due to its excellent electrostatic properties, differential pressure and filtration efficiency. Therefore, wet-laid nonwoven for air filters were manufactured using plexi-filaments formed through flash spinning and having various fiber diameter from hundreds of nanometers to tens of micrometers, and its applicability as an air-filter media was investigated compared to the meltblown nonwoven. As a result of the performance evaluation, it was found that the filtration efficiency and barrier performance at 0.3㎛ was superior to that of the meltblown nonwoven of the same weight, although the differential pressure was high due to morphological properties of the plexi-filament.

  • This paper presents pedestrian recognition to improve performance for vehicle safety system or surveillance system. Pedestrian detection method using HOG (Histograms of Oriented Gradients) has showed 90% recognition rate. But if someone takes a picture in the rain, the image may be distorted by rain streaks and recognition rate goes down by 62%. To solve this problem, we applied image decomposition method using MCA (Morphological Component Analysis). In this case, rain removal method improves recognition rate from 62% to 70%. However, it is difficult to apply conventional image decomposition method using MCA on vehicle safety system or surveillance system as conventional method is too slow for real-time system. To alleviate this issue, we propose a rain removal method by using low-pass filter and DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform). The DCT helps separate the image into rain components. The image is removed rain components by Butterworth filtering. Experimental results show that our method achieved 90% of recognition rate. In addition, the proposed method had accelerated processing time to 17.8ms which is acceptable for real-time system.
