  • The status of corn genetic diversity in the uplands of Sarangani in Southern Philippines was investigated using 12 morphological traits subjected to multivariate statistical analyses. Information about traditional farming, post-harvest and storage practices were also elicited especially in relation to losses of traditional varieties, a phenomenon known as genetic erosion. While a handful of farmers still plant traditional corn varieties in the remotest areas, a significant number had already shifted to genetically modified corn. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) reduced the 12 morphological traits into 5 principal components and identified ear length and ear weight to be major contributors to variation. Cluster Analysis, on the other hand, formed two distinct groups but failed to give information about intra-cluster variability among the 32 collected corn accessions. These results warrant that more informative morphological traits and that molecular markers will be used to obtain a better picture of genetic diversity in Sarangani upland corn. Molecular analysis is also needed to establish genetic identities of these cultivars and to detect gene introgression from GM varieties into the gene pool of farmers' corn varieties. These analyses are imperative for the conservation of traditional corn varieties before they disappear in the Sarangani uplands because of shifting priorities of upland farmers.

  • Processing of unknown words such as proper nouns and newly coined words is important for a morphological analyzer to process documents in various domains. In this study, a segmentation and tagging method for unknown Korean words is proposed for the 3-step probabilistic morphological analysis. For guessing unknown word, it uses rich suffixes that are attached to open class words, such as general nouns and proper nouns. We propose a method to learn the suffix patterns from a morpheme tagged corpus, and calculate their probabilities for unknown open word segmentation and tagging in the probabilistic morphological analysis model. Results of the experiment showed that the performance of unknown word processing is greatly improved in the documents containing many unregistered words.

  • Lespedeza maximowiczii C. K. Schneid. (Fabaceae) is a deciduous shrub which is known to be distributed in the temperate forests of China, Korea and on Tsushima Island of Japan. Due to severe morphological variations within species, numerous examinations have been conducted for Korean L. maximowiczii. However, the morphology of Chinese plants has not been studied as thoroughly, despite doubts about their taxonomy. To clarify this taxonomic issue, we investigated morphological characters and undertook a Bayesian clustering analysis with microsatellite markers. The morphological and genetic traits of Chinese individuals varied considerably from those of typical L. maximowiczii growing in Korea. For example, petals of the former had a different shape and bore long claws, while the calyx lobes were diverged above the middle and the upper surface of the leaflet was pubescent. Their terete buds and spirally arranged bud scales were distinct from those within the series/section Heterolespedeza, which includes L. maximowiczii. Our Bayesian clustering analysis additionally included L. buergeri as an outgroup. Those results indicated that the Chinese samples clustered into a lineage separated from L. maximowiczii (optimum cluster, K = 2), despite the fact that the latter is grouped into the same lineage with L. buergeri. Therefore, we treat those Chinese plants as a new species with the name L. pseudomaximowiczii.

  • This paper was undertaken to do morphological analysis of wear debris for slipper-Pad of hydraulic rotary acuator. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the wear test device and wear specimens of the pin on disk type was rubbed in paraffinic base oil by three kinds of lubricating materials, varying applied load, sliding distance. The four shape parameters(50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) are used for morphological analysis of wear debris. The results showed that the four shape parameters of wear debris depend on a kind of the lubricating condition. It was capable of presuming wear volume for slipper-pad of hydraulic rotary acuator on driving time.

  • A fully automatic image analysis method was applied to obtain detailed data on morphological parameters of a glucoamylase fermentation broth with Aspergillus niger No. PFST-38. a mutant strain for glucoamylase hyperproducer. In the initial stage of fermentation. there was an increase in hyphal length. whereas at the end of the fermentation a decrease in hyphal length and increase in hyphal thickness were observed. The percentage of clumps declined with dilution and the influence of shear stress upon hyphal length was negligible. It was found that the slower the decrease in the main hyphal length and the number of tips with the fermentation time. the higher the glucoamylase production rate was recorded. The production rate of glucoamylase was closely related to the increase in the hyphal thickness.

  • This paper proposes a spoken Korean processing model which is extensible to large vocabulary continuous spoken Korean system. The integration of phoneme level speech recognition with natural language processing can support a sophisticated phonological/morphological analysis. The model consists of a diphone speech recognizer, a viterbi dictionaly searcher and a morpheme connectivity information checker. Two-level hierarchical TDNNs recognize newly defined Korean diphones. The diphone sequences are segmented and converted to the most probable morpheme sequences by the Viterbi dictionary searcher. The morpheme sequency are then examined by the morpheme connectivity information checker and the correct morpheme sequence which has the greatest probability is collected. The experiments show that the morphological analysis for spoken Korean can be achieved for 328 Eojeols with 80.6% success rate.

  • The type of a given sentence indicates the speaker's attitude towards the listener and is usually determined by its final endings and punctuation marks. However, some 6na1 endings are used in several types of sentences, which means that we cannot identify the sentential type by considering only the final endings and punctuation marks. In this paper, we propose methods of finding some other linguistic clues for indentifying the sentential type with a morphological analysis. We also propose to use these methods to implement a system that automatically classifies sentences in Korean according to their sentential types.

  • In this paper, the probabilistic relations of dual morphological operations, such as dilation and erosion, closing and opening, and close- open and open-close, and the statistical properties for a continuous stationary lst order Gauss-Markov source are analyzed. The result is that the dual filters have symmetrical means and skews, and equal variances. Also, the statistics of morphological filters are very similar with those of input source, as correlation coefficient increases.

  • One hundred twenty two accessions of 6 species in genus Allium were collected throughout 5 regions of Korea. Their genetic relationship was investigated by using inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. The morphological analysis was measured for 6 quantitative and quantified for 1 qualitative trait. ISSR analysis obtained a total of 370 polymorphic bands by using seventeen primers. The cluster analysis of genus Allium based on morphological data could identify three groups. The accessions of Allium belonged to the Allium monanthum clustered into five groups at genetic distance ranging from 0.94 on the base of ISSR analysis. Correlation analysis between morphological and ISSR analysis showed low coefficient(r = 0.036). These markers are thought to be used in research of molecular markers for classification and cross breeding of Allium monanthum and A. grai.

  • This study aimed to find out the morphological evolution process for future vision of world smart city. The contents and methods of study was divided and compared by 4 continents and Korea focused on the convergence numbers of ET and IT in smart city and did correlation analysis and analysis of convergence number in device/technology by periods. The analysis materials were 32 cases of smart city in whole world and times were 4 periods. The results of study were listed below. First, the smart city in period 1 was morphological evolutions preserved environment and kept natural form of existing city and filled up device/technology. Second, the smart city in period 2 was morphological evolutions through ET-centric development. Third, the smart city in period 3 was morphological evolutions through advancement of ET and device/technology related to production of energy. Forth, the smart city in period 4 was morphological evolutions fusing, dissipating and creating new ET and IT through the advancement process of all technologies. In conclusion, morphological evolution of smart city will change systematic city structure of convergence form, not each discriminating development between ET and IT, and the forming of smart city will be evolved by repetitive convergence process of technologies continually.
