Seasonal variation in global transport calculated from an ocean general circulation model (OGCM) has been assessed through the comparison with observational estimates. The OGCM based on the GFDL MOM1.1 has honzontal grid interval of 10 and 21 verticle levels, and was integrated for 31 years forced by climatological wind stress, freshwater flux, and heat flux with restoring. General features of the world ocean circulation are well reproduced, which include the western boundary currents such as the Kuroshio and the Agulhas Current, the Equatorial Current system, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and the Weddell Sea gyres. Also well resolved is the remarkable seasonal variation in the depth-integrated flows in the northern Indian Ocean due to the monsoonal wind. Monthly variation is found to be dominant in the transport of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current through the Drake Passage in accordance with observational estimates. It has been shown that the mid-latitude depth-integrated flows obey the Sverdrup relation, except for some regions such as continental shelf regions where the interaction between stratification and bottom topography is critical.

Like other major river basin systems in the West of the United States the Platte River Basin are faced with the challenges of allocating more water for plant and animal species. A part of the Central Platte River was designated as critical habitat for the whooping crane in 1978. The water allocation system in the Platte River Basin is dominated by the Prior Appropriation Doctrine, which allocates water according to the priorities based on the date of water use. The Platte River Basin segregated into five subregions for purpose of analysis. 24 years of historic records of monthly flow and all the demands were complied. The simulation of river basin modeling includes physical operation of the system including water allocation by water rights and interstate compact agreements, reservoir operations, and diversion with consumptive use and return flow. MODSIM, a generalized river basin network model, was used for estimating the timing and magnitude of impacts on river flows and diversions associated with water transfers from each region. A total of 20 alternatives were considered, covering transfers from each of the five regions of basin with several options. The result shows that the timing and availability of augmented water at the critical habitat is not only a function of use by junior appropriators, but also of river losses, and timing of return flows.
The SSARR model adopting IS(integrated snowband) watershed model is applied to the Nakdong River basin for low flow analysis. The IS watershed model is added to new version of the SSARR which has functions of simulating evapotranspiration. infiltration and lower zone routing. It provides annual water budget information as an output file and can be operated by interactive mode. Sensitivity analysis for both cases of high and low flows was carried out, which becomes the knowledge base for model calibration. Model verification was performed using the relative errors of high flows and absolute errors of low flows at the control points. Monthly water budget analysis was done by IS watershed model. and it reveals that runoff coefficient is 52.6%

Because the geological features of Imha basin are composed of clay and shale layer, much soil particle flows into reservoir in shape of muddy water when it rains a lot. Therefore, turbidity data can be indirect-index to estimate the soil erosion of Imha basin. This study evaluated annual soil erosion using GIS-based soil erosion model and applied rainfall weighting value method by time-series rainfall data to estimate monthly soil erosion. In view of 2003 turbidity data, monthly soil erosion with rainfall weighting value is more efficient than monthly soil erosion with rainfall data.
The existing stochastic models for the data with hydrologic persistence can be classified into two categories; the short-term and long-term models. For the present study, the Hurst coefficients which are the dominant parameter in the Fast Fractional Gaussian Noise(FFGN)model, one of the long-term models. are estimated with historical annual and monthly streamflows. In order to verify the applicability of these estimators the statistical properties of the generated annual streamflows by FFGN model are compared with those of the historical annual streamflows. Then the generated annual streamflows by FFGN model are disaggregated into the monthly streamflows by disaggregation model at two sites, i.e. Waekman and Jindong, in the Nakdong River Basin. On the other hand, the monthly stream flows at the two sites were also generated by the two-site Matalas model which is one of the short-term models. To evaluate the applicability of the above models and to select the better model the statistical properties of the generated monthly streamflows by two models were compared with those of the historicals, respectively.
For the determination of a reservoir capacity Rippl's mass-curve method has long been used with the past river flow data assuming the same flow records will be repeated in the future. In this study the synthetic generation methods of thomas-Fiering type and harmonic analysis were used to synthetically generate 50 years of monthly river inflows to three single-purpose reservoris(Chuncheon, Chungpyong, Hwacheon) and three multi-purpose reservoirs(Soyany, Andon, Daichung). The generated sequences of monthly flows were analyzed based on the range concept, and hence the so-determined ranges for single-prupose and multi-purpose rewervoirs were correlated with the number of monthly flow subseries, resulting an empirical equation of the Feller's type. (1) Single-purpose reservoir $$R_n=2.8357 I\sqrt{n}$$ (2) Multi-purpose reservoir $$R_n=2.5145 I\sqrt{n}$$ where, $R_n$:Range(㎥/S-M) n:periodic(12 months, ……120 months) I:Input mean(㎥/S-M) In Korea, the monthly inflow data generation will be fit to the Thomas-Fiering type, and this paper shows that the periodic range is easily calculated without the Rippl's mass-curve method as shown above formula.
As the natural flows in rivers dramatically decrease during drought season in Korea, a deterioration of river water quality is accelerated. Thus, consideration of downstream water quality responding to changes in reservoir release is essential for an integrated watershed management with regards to water quantity and quality. In this study, water quality models based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) method were developed using historical downstream water quality (rm $\NH_3$-N) data obtained from a water treatment plant in Geum river and reservoir release data from Daechung dam. A nonlinear multiple regression model was developed and compared with the ANN models. In the models, the rm NH$_3$-N concentration for next time step is dependent on dam outflow, river water quality data such as pH, alkalinity, temperature, and rm $\NH_3$-N of previous time step. The model parameters were estimated using monthly data from Jan. 1993 to Dec. 1998, then another set of monthly data between Jan. 1999 and Dec. 2000 were used for verification. The predictive performance of the models was evaluated by comparing the statistical characteristics of predicted data with those of observed data. According to the results, the ANN models showed a better performance than the regression model in the applied cases.
This paper presents the depth-mean monthly variation in the circulation of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea computed using a robust diagnostic model. The mixed three-dimensional finite-difference Galerkin function model developed by Lee et at. (2000, 2001) has been extended to take into account baroclinic effects and then used to calculate the depth-mean flow fields as part of the results. In addition to M2 tide and oceanic flows previously considered, the model has been driven by the monthly mean wind stresses from Na and Seo (1998), the density gradient calculated based on by GDEM data set released by US Navy. Model results are very encouraging in that many of observed features including Jeju Cyclonic Gyre and frontal eddies along the shelfside of the Kuroshio main stream and west of Kyushu, are satisfactorily reproduced and are expected to be of value in interpreting observations in various oceanograhic disciplines.
This paper examines the existence of the fund performance persistence and the smart money effect in Korean stock market and tests the flow-induced price pressure (FIPP) hypothesis, that is, fund flows affect individual stock returns and mutual fund performance. This paper also tests whether the FIPP effect can cause the performance persistence using the monthly returns and stock holdings data of 2,702 Korean mutual funds from January 2002 to June 2008. The empirical results indicate that the performance persistence exists significantly for a long time but the smart money effect does not. The hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past 12 months performance and selling funds with the lowest past 12 months performance earns 0.11%~1.05% monthly abnormal returns, on average, in 3 years from portfolio formation month, but the hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past net fund inflows and selling funds with the lowest past net fund inflows cannot earn positive monthly abnormal returns and the size of negative abnormal returns of the portfolio increase as time goes on. We find the evidence that the FIPP hypothesis is significantly supported. We first estimate the FIPP measure for each individual stock using the trading volume resulting from past fund flows and then construct the hedge portfolio by buying stocks with the highest FIPP measure and selling stocks with the lowest FIPP measure. That portfolio earns significantly positive abnormal return, 1.01% at only portfolio formation month and cannot earn significant abnormal returns after formation month. But, the FIPP effect cannot cause the performance persistence because, within the same FIPP measure group, funds with higher past performance still earn higher monthly abnormal returns than those with lower past performance by 0.08%~0.77%, on average, in 2 years. These results imply that the main cause of the performance persistence in Korean stock market is the difference of fund managers' ability rather than the FIPP effect.

The variation in the traffic volume on any given roads is the reflection of its user's economic activities and life patterns. And traffic volume flows in every hour usually take different charateristics depending on the location and the function of the roads. This study produced the Monthly Adjustment Factor, Weekly Adjustment Factor and Design hourly Factor, each of which is the index indicating the traffic volume charaterirstics on the highways leading to the recreation areas in the mountainous and seaside tourist sites. Applying these results, it might be possible to calculate the optimal AADT (Annual Average Daily Traffic) and DHV (Design Hour Volume), also be a help to establish a traffic management policy. Finally, it hopes to promote new version of KHCM (Korea Highway Capacity Manual) which includes traffic volume characteristics on recreation areas.
