  • A persulfate(PS)/sulfidated microscale zero-valent iron(S-mZVI) system was tested for treating a soil contaminated with phenol. Sulfidation of bare mZVI was conducted using a mechanochemical process utilizing a ball mill in order to improve persulfate activation capacity and stability of unmodified mZVI. The synthesized S-mZVI performed markedly better than the bare mZVI in activating PS. The optimum molar ratio of sulfur to mZVI was around 0.12. In the soil slurry experiments, a very rapid and complete removal of phenol was observed at the optimum molar ratios of PS to S-mZVI of 2:1 and PS to phenol of 16:1. The phenol removal efficiencies decreased as the water content of the slurries decreased. This was believed to be due to increased soil oxidant demand as the amount of soil was increased as relative to the water content. To evaluate the field applicability of the process, slurry experiments adopting high soil contents were carried out that simulated in-situ soil mixing conditions. These experiments resulted in substantially compromised degradation efficiencies of 54.3% and 43.8% within 4 hours. The current study generally shows that the PS/S-mZVI process has a potential to be developed into a remediation technology for soils contaminated with organics.

  • Water-soluble polysaccharides from the fruiting bodies of Agaricus blazei Murill were extracted with 0.9% sodium chloride and hot water, successively. The purified polysaccharides showed a potent immunostimulating activity. Eight major polysaccharides, which were named from AG-l to AG-8, were fractionated and purified by ethanol precipitation, ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and gel filtration on Toyopearl HW 65F. These polysaccharides were identified to be homogeneous by analysis of HPLC. Three major active polysaccharides (AG-2, -3, and -6) showed relatively strong immunostimulating activity. AG-2 and -3 were composed of glucose, galactose and mannose in the molar ratios of 74.0:15.3:10.7 and 63.6:17.6:12.7, respectively. AG-6 was composed of glucose and ribose in the molar ratios of 81.4:12.6.

  • In this work, a series of molar ratios composed with YD-128 and DDM were chosen based on the viscosity analysis. The mixtures of YD-128 and DDM with the different molar ratios were cured at $170^{\circ}C$ for 15 min followed by post cure at $190^{\circ}C$ for two hours. The thermal properties of the cured samples were investigated with DSC, TGA, DMA, and TMA. The conversion ratio of the mixtures of YD-128 and DDM (1 : 1.1) was calculated by dividing ${\Delta}H$ obtained from DSC experiments for each cured sample by ${\Delta}H$. The TGA data of the cured samples showed that the thermal stability and thermal degradation activation energy were proportional to the amount of DDM in the mixtures. However, the highest tan ${\delta}$, and the lowest thermal expansion data with DMA and TMA respectively were obtained from the stoichiometric mixture of YD-128 and DDM. Furthermore, the different ratio of mixtures were applied to test specimens to be cured at $170^{\circ}C$ to measure single lap shear strength with universal testing machine.

  • The Cu-Mn mixed oxide catalysts with different molar ratios of Cu/(Cu+Mn) prepared by co-precipitation method have been investigated in CO oxidation at $30^{\circ}C$. The catalysts used in this study were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), $N_2$ sorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and $H_2$-temperature programmed reduction $(H_2-TPR)$ to correlate with catalytic activities in CO oxidation. The $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms of Cu-Mn mixed oxide catalysts showed a type 4 having pore range of 7-20 nm and BET surface area was increased from 17 to $205\;m^2{\cdot}g^{-1}$ with increasing of Mn content. The XPS analysis showed the surface oxidation state of Cu and Mn represented $Cu^{2+}$and the mixture of $Mn^{3+}$ and $Mn^{4+}$, respectively. Among the catalysts studied here, Cu/(Cu+Mn) = 0.5 catalyst showed the highest activity at $30^{\circ}C$ in CO oxidation and the catalytic activity showed a typical volcano-shape curve with respect to Cu/(Cu+Mn) molar ratios. The water vapor showed a prohibiting effect on the efficiency of the catalyst which is due to the competitive adsorption of carbon monoxide on the active sites of catalyst surface and finally the formation of hydroxyl group with active metals.

  • In this experiment, persulfate, a strong oxidant for ISCO (In-Situ Chemical Oxidation) was used to degraded RDX in artificial ground water at ambient temperature. Results of RDX degradation by persulfate in a batch reactor showed that the oxidation reaction was pseudo first order with estimated Ea (activation energy) of $1.14{\times}10^2kJ/mol$ and the rate was increased with the increase of reaction temperature. The oxidation of RDX by persulfate increased slightly with the increase of initial solution pH from 4 to 8. The RDX oxidation rate increased 13 times at pH 10 compared with that at pH 4, however, alkaline hydrolysis was found to be the main reaction of RDX degradation rather than oxidation. The study also showed that the oxidation rate of RDX by persulfate was linearly dependent upon the molar ratios of persulfate to RDX from 5 : 1 up to 100 : 1, with a proportion constant of $4{\times}10^{-4}$ ($min^{-1}$/molar ratio) at $70^{\circ}C$. While NOM (Natural Organic Matter) exerted negative effects on the oxidation rate of RDX by persulfate, with a proportion constant of $1.21{\times}10^{-4}$ ($min^{-1}{\cdot}L/mg-NOM$) at $70^{\circ}C$ and persulfate/NOM molar ratio of 10/1. The decrease in RDX oxidation rate was linearly dependent upon the added NOM concentration. However, the estimated activation energy in the presence of 20 mg-NOM/L was within 3.3% error compared to that without NOM, which implies the addition of NOM does not alter intrinsic oxidation reaction.

  • Porous silica ceramics were prepared(with HCI catalyst) using H2O/TEOS molar ratios of 2.6~59.0, with the EtOH/TEOS ratio fixed. After preparing 9 kinds of sol, the followings were investigated; measurement of the gelation time, thermal analyses by TG/DTA, property analyses of the intermediates by FT-IR and X-ray diffractometry with dried samples, analyses of SiO2 polymer by FT-IR, the investigation of specific sur-face area and pore size distribution by N2-adsorption isotherm, and structural change of SiO2 polymer and pore morphology by TEM observation, with samples heat-treated to 50$0^{\circ}C$. In the concentrations of in-vestigated compositions and catalyst, gelation time showed a minimum at ca. 11 moles of water per one mole of TEOS, the highest degree of polymerization at ca. 8-18 moles, and the largest specific surface area at ca. 11 moles, which means that the polymerization proceeded fastest at ca. 11 moles of water. In con-clusion, the more water used, the faster the polymerization reaction up to ca. 11 moles, but more than ca. 11 moles of water caused retardation of gelation and resultant reduction of specific surface area.

  • The curing behavior of a phenolic resin (F/p: 1.3, 1.9, 2.5 for resol resin, F/P: 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 for novolac resin) has been studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. In this study is to synthesis of resol and novolac type phenolic resin with different F/P molar ratios and to compare the level of cure at different curing temperature conditions ($130^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$ for resol resin, $160^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$ for novolac resin) for 3, 5, 7, 10, 20, and 60 (min.), respectively. The conversion (${\alpha}$) was determined by the ratio of the peak area with time to the peak area of non-baked phenolic QH ($3300cm^{-1}$) at spectra. It is concluded that the initial curing rate of resol and novolac resin was increased as the molar ratio of formaldehyde/phenol increased and as the curing temperature of resin increased. According to the analysis was by the homogenous first-order model, the initial curing rate of resol and novolac resin was increased as the molar ratio of formaIdehyde/phenol increased at specific curing temperature.

  • Diacylglycerol (DAG) was produced from lipase by the catalyzed synthesis of soybean oil (SBO) and glyceryl monooleate (GMO) with Lipozyme TLIM (Thermomyces lanuginosa). Effects of reaction time, molar ratio and enzyme road were studied. When 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2 (SBO:GMO) molar ratios with 20% Lipozyme TLIM were applied in a 1-hr reaction, the concentrations of DAG produced were 17.8, 20.0 and 20.4 g/100 g oil, respectively. Different amounts (2, 5, 10 and 20%) of Lipozyme TLIM were used at a 1:2 (SBO:GMO) molar ratio, and the concentrations of DAG produced in a 1-hr reaction were 10.8, 14.0, 16.9 and 20.4 g/100 g oil, respectively. During a 72-hr reaction, 10.8-22.7 g/100 g oil of DAG were produced under the reaction conditions in this study.

  • According to its merits about high curing speed and low emission of volatile organic compounds, UV curable inorganic-organic coating technology has been developed as an alternative for toxic and carcinogenic chromate-based treatments for years. It is consistently observed that ultra-thin films offer excellent corrosion protection as well as paint adhesion to metals. Based on the tetra-ethylorthosilicate(TEOS) and methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane(MPTMS), inorganic sol was synthesized and formed hybrid networks with UV curable acrylic monomer, 6-hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA), trimethylolpropane triacrylate(TMPTA), pentaerylthritol triacrylate(PETA). Several methods were used to test their properties such as salt spray test, potentiodynamic measurement, tape peel test, etc. It was shown that anti-corrosive property and stability of storage were affected by the molecular ratios of inorganic and organic compounds. It was not only the stability of storage, but had a excellent anti-corrosive, paint adhesive, and anti-solvent properties in a final molar ratios of 0.6/0.04/0.86/0.005 (TEOS/MPTMS/Acetone/HNO3) and 0.08/0.106/0.081/0.02 (TMPTA/HDDA/PETA/photo initiator).

  • The copolymerizations of 2-fluorohexylethyl acrylate (FA) with 2-(o-(1'-methylpropylidenamino)carboxyl amino)ethyl methacrylate(MEM) with different molar ratios of the two monomers were carried out in methyl ethyl ketone using ${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$'-azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator to synthesize water repellent polyacrylate derivatives with protected isocyanate groups. The contents of FA and MEM in the copolymers were analyzed by NMR. The monomer reactivity ratios of MEM (1) and FA (2) were determined by Kelen-Tudos plot as follows : r$\_$1/=1.59 and r$\_$2/=0.50. The number-average molecular weights of the copolymers were in the range of 39400 to 72400 and the polydispersity indexes were about 1.5. The protected isocyanate groups in the copolymers were converted into isocyanate groups above 150$^{\circ}C$. The contact angle of the copolymer with 65 ㏖% of FA fur water was about 95$^{\circ}$.
