  • Cost overruns, schedule delays, and a shortage of skilled labor are common problems the construction industry is currently experiencing. Modularization and standardization strategies have the potential to resolve the various problems mentioned above and have been applied for various construction applications for a long time. However, the level of modularization remains low, and modular construction projects have not been getting the full benefits. Thus, this review investigated the cutting-edge technologies currently being utilized to develop the modular construction field. For this paper, qualified research papers were identified using predetermined keywords from previous related research papers. Identified literature was then filtered and analyzed. According to the included reviews, several technologies are being developed for modular construction. For example, automated design and monitoring systems for modularization were developed. In addition, research labs are utilizing robotic arms for modular construction to achieve a high level of completion in the construction industry, as is seen in the manufacturing industry. Despite these efforts, more research and development are necessary because some automation technologies still require manual activities. Thus, there is great potential for further development of modularization techniques, and further research is recommended to achieve high levels of modularization.

  • Software maintenance activities have always been important issues in many domains of the software industry. In order to help to resolve this issue, software modularization approaches have been studied to build adequate modules with high cohesion and low coupling; such modular structures can help the comprehension and maintenance of complex systems. In this paper, we propose a GUI-based automated approach for software modularization based on GUI structure analysis. GUI is a principal manner to allow users to access the overall functionalities of a software system; in particular, GUI is closely related to software functionalities, which makes it a promising tool to identify and understand the entire software system. We also implement a software tool to support our approach and evaluate it with a case study using an open source software.

  • Recently, a rolling stock has been requiring more efficient manufacturing method than welding for the improved quality and the enhanced fabrication of car body structure. As an alternative, modularization of car body structure is being studied. Accordingly, rolling stock manufacturers need to make it possible to develop a variety of rolling stock vehicles made from modularized sub-blocks in order to meet various customer's demands. The bolt-assembled car body structure for modularization is known to have many advantages over the existing weld-assembled method and is free from the possible welding defects, such as welds between dissimilar metals, crack, deformation and loss of strength. Consequently, we can have the improved overall quality, the reduced man powers for assembly and the satisfied strength of car body structure. The review is about the bolt-assembled car body structure for modularization to assure global competitiveness and an enhanced technique in terms of assembly methodology of car body structure.

  • We proposed a modularization design technique for implementing software of on-board train control system. We already proved the efficiency of CASE Tool(SCADE) for safety critical software design. The several functions of train are implemented on CASE tool each modules. We divided functions of train into modules based on the modularization design. We used MATLAB for design of on-board train control software. We proved that this technique is more useful for the software design of on-board train control for EMU.

  • In this paper, a design method of the simulation program for HILS(Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) system is proposed. The present method consists of definition of requirements for HILS, development of specifications, and implementation of the program to satisfy the specifications. In the implementation of the program, the application of hardware interface and the concept of structural modularization are proposed to satisfy the specifications. The concepts of CSCI(Computer Software Configuration Item) and encapsulation are used for structural modularization. The proposed method was practically applied to the development of the simulation program for the efficient operation in HILS of an anti-ship missile system.

  • This study deals with CARS (Computer Aided ROMUM System) which is a computer version of ROMUM (RObot Modularization of the Unit Motion). ROMUM was a method developed by the concept of modularization of the unit motion of robots. Because CARS is a computer assisted method of menu-driven type for human interface, this method can be easily applied for analyzing the work motion and measuring the execution time of robots. Therefore, it will be helpful for reducing the analysis effort and time of robot work.

  • This paper suggests a new process structuring method, which we call process modularization, for decomposing and grouping activities in a process. Above all, we propose the concept of a module that is a group of activities positioned on the same flow before and after control constructs. Since activities in a module are relatively strongly interrelated with one another, it is important to take into consideration of these together. A design structure matrix (DSM) is used to structure the process because it has a lot of advantages in process modeling and analysis. We developed two algorithms: the restricted topological sorting (RTS) algorithm for ordering activities and the module finding (MF) algorithm for detecting modules in a process, which utilize the DSM. The suggested approach enables a firm's manager to design and analyze the process effectively. We also developed a supporting tool to accelerate the progress of process modularization. The supporting tool aids the process manager in finding the module and understanding the process structure easily. An illustrative example is addressed to show operations of the suggested approach.
