The present study tackles the problem of forced vibration of imperfect axially functionally graded shell structure with truncated conical geometry. The linear and nonlinear large-deflection of the structure are considered in the mathematical formulation using von-Kármán models. Modified coupled stress method and principle of minimum virtual work are employed in the modeling to obtain the final governing equations. In addition, formulations of classical elasticity theory are also presented. Different functions, including the linear, convex, and exponential cross-section shapes, are considered in the grading material modeling along the thickness direction. The grading properties of the material are a direct result of the porosity change in the thickness direction. Vibration responses of the structure are calculated using the semi-analytical method of a couple of homotopy perturbation methods (HPM) and the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). Contradicting effects of small-scale, porosity, and volume fraction parameters on the nonlinear amplitude, frequency ratio, dynamic deflection, resonance frequency, and natural frequency are observed for shell structure under various boundary conditions.

The modified couple stress-based third-order shear deformation theory is presented for sigmoid functionally graded materials (S-FGM) plates. The advantage of the modified couple stress theory is the involvement of only one material length scale parameter which causes to create symmetric couple stress tensor and to use it more easily. Analytical solution for dynamic instability analysis of S-FGM plates on elastic medium is investigated. The present models contain two-constituent material variation through the plate thickness. The equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's energy principle. The governing equations are then written in the form of Mathieu-Hill equations and then Bolotin's method is employed to determine the instability regions. The boundaries of the instability regions are represented in the dynamic load and excitation frequency plane. It is assumed that the elastic medium is modeled as Pasternak elastic medium. The effects of static and dynamic load, power law index, material length scale parameter, side-to-thickness ratio, and elastic medium parameter have been discussed. The width of the instability region for an S-FGM plate decreases with the decrease of material length scale parameter. The study is relevant to the dynamic simulation of micro structures embedded in elastic medium subjected to intense compression and tension.
Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) provide low damping when it comes to deep water condition, and that not all water depth is mobilized in energy dissipation. This research focussed on a method to improve the efficiency of TLDs with deep water condition. Several bottom-mounted baffles were installed inside a TLD and the dynamic characteristics of modified TLDs together with their effect on the vibration control of a SDOF structure were studied experimentally. A series of free vibration and harmonic forced vibration tests were carried out. The controlling parameter in the conducted tests was the Vertical Blocking Ratio (VBR) of baffles. Results indicated that increase in VBR decreases the natural frequency of TLD and increases its damping ratio. It was found that the VBR range of 10% to 30% reduced response of the structure significantly. The modified TLD with the VBR of 30% showed the best performance when reduction in structural responses under harmonic excitations were compared.
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technique that allows the transmission of high data rates over wideband radio channels subject to frequency selective fading by dividing the data into several narrowband and flat fading channels. OFDM has high spectral efficiency and channel robustness. However, a major drawback of OFDM is that the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signals is high, which causes nonlinear distortion in the received data and reduces the efficiency of the high power amplifier in the transmitter. The most straightforward method to solve this problem is to use a nonlinear mapping algorithm to transform the signal into a new signal that has a smaller PAPR. One of the latest nonlinear methods proposed to reduce the PAPR is the $L_2$-by-3 algorithm, which is based on the discrete sliding norm transform. In this paper, a new algorithm based on the $L_2$-by-3 method is proposed. The proposed method is very simple and has a low complexity analysis. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs better, has better power spectral density, and is less sensitive to the modulation type and number of subcarriers than $L_2$-by-3.
This paper has focused on presenting vibration analysis of trapezoidal sandwich plates with 3D-graphene foam reinforced polymer matrix composites (GrF-PMC) core and FG wavy CNT-reinforced face sheets. The porous graphene foam possessing 3D scaffold structures has been introduced into polymers for enhancing the overall stiffness of the composite structure. Also, 3D graphene foams can distribute uniformly or non-uniformly in the plate thickness direction. The effective Young's modulus, mass density and Poisson's ratio are predicted by the rule of mixture. In this study, the classical theory concerning the mechanical efficiency of a matrix embedding finite length fibers has been modified by introducing the tube-to-tube random contact, which explicitly accounts for the progressive reduction of the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. The First-order shear deformation theory of plate is utilized to establish governing partial differential equations and boundary conditions for trapezoidal plate. The governing equations together with related boundary conditions are discretized using a mapping-generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method in spatial domain. Then natural frequencies of the trapezoidal sandwich plates are obtained using GDQ method. Validity of the current study is evaluated by comparing its numerical results with those available in the literature. It is explicated that 3D-GrF skeleton type and weight fraction, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) waviness and CNT aspect ratio can significantly affect the vibrational behavior of the sandwich structure. The plate's normalized natural frequency decreased and the straight carbon nanotube (w=0) reached the highest frequency by increasing the values of the waviness index (w).
The vibration and stability analysis is investigated for composite cylindrical shells that composed of ceramic, FGM, and metal layers subjected to various loads. Material properties of FG layer are varied continuously in thickness direction according to a simple power distribution in terms of the ceramic and metal volume fractions. The modified Donnell type stability and compatibility equations are obtained. Applying Galerkin's method analytic solutions are obtained for the critical parameters. The detailed parametric studies are carried out to study the influences of thickness variations of the FG layer, radius-to-thickness ratio, lengths-to-radius ratio, material composition and material profile index on the critical parameters of three-layered cylindrical shells. Comparing results with those in the literature validates the present analysis.

In this paper, we studied a design method for a broadband quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) for terrestrial digital television (DTV) reception. The proposed antenna is composed of a dipole driver, a rectangular patch type director close to the dipole, and a ground reflector printed on an FR4 substrate. A balun between a microstrip line and a coplanar strip (CPS) line is a rectangular patch inserted along the center of the CPS. The end of the balun is connected to the CPS line through a shorting pin. An antenna, as an design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV, and the characteristics of the designed antenna are examined. The antenna has a good performance such as a frequency band of 430-842 MHz for a voltage standing wave ratio < 2, a gain > 3.7 dBi, and a front-to-back ratio > 7.4 dB.

The current investigation is the first endeavor to apply the full layerwise finite element method (FEM) in free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) composite plates reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) in thermal environment. Unlike the equivalent single-layer (ESL) theories, the layerwise FEM focuses on all three-dimensional (3D) effects. The GPLs weight fraction is presumed invariable in each layer but varies through the plate thickness in a layerwise model. The modified Halpin-Tsai model is employed to acquire the effective Young's modulus. The rule of mixtures is applied to specify the effective Poisson's ratio and mass density. First, the current method is validated by comparing the numerical results with those stated in the available works. Next, a thorough numerical study is performed to examine the influence of various factors involving the pattern of distribution, weight fraction, geometry, and size of GPLs, together with the thickness-to-span ratio, thermal environment, and boundary conditions of the plate, on its free vibration behaviors. Numerical results demonstrate that employing a small percentage of GPL as reinforcement considerably grows the natural frequencies of the pure epoxy. Also, distributing more square-shaped GPLs, involving a smaller amount of graphene layers, and vicinity to the upper and lower surfaces make it the most efficient method to enhance the free vibration behaviors of the plate.

This paper proposes a hologram data compression scheme that uses the existing image/video compression techniques, in which the existing techniques are modified appropriately to fit to the characteristics of hologram. In this paper we use CGH as the hologram data. The proposed scheme uses the generation characteristics of a CGH to consist of a pre-processing, spatial segmentation of a CGH, frequency-transformation with 2D-DCT (2-dimensional discrete cosine transform), and motion estimation and residual image generation in the frequency-domain. It uses H.264/AVC, the lossless compressor BinHex, and a linear quantizer that we have made. From the experiments the proposed scheme showed the image quality of about 25.4 dB at the compression ratio of 10:1 and about 16.5dB at 90:1 compression ratio.

The basic binary quantized first-order digital phase locked loop (DPLL) is modified in order to reduce the aquisition time and steadyftate phase error. Adding the loop that corrects the phase difference by detecting the falling zero-crossing time, an effort for the improving the performance is performed and the performance compared with that of the basic DPLL. Using a graphical method, the phase locking processes of the modified DPLL for a phase step and a frequency step input are depicted visually in the absence of noise. The performance of the modified DPLL for a sinusoidal input added narrow band random noise is evaluated using the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation. This approach is verified by direct computer simulation. The steady-state phase error and the average aquisition time of the modified DPLL are compared with those of the basic DPLL, It is shown that the aquisition time of the modified DPLL is shortened about twice, also, as signal to noise ratio increases, the effect of the modification increases and the steady-state phase error approaches to zero.
