  • In general, preliminary hull form design is performed by changing a parent hull form using a computer to satisfy given requirements, e.g., principal dimensions, displacement, $L_{CB}$, and etc. Principal dimensions, $C_b,\;L_{CB}$ and midship sections are the only parameters to be modified in the traditional hull form variation methods available for preliminary design. In this paper, a method is presented in which local cross sections as well as principal dimensions and midship sections are modified according to design requirements. The method gives hydrostatic curves of modified hull form simultaneously. An optimization technique to satisfy the constraints of hydrostatic characteristics such as maximizing KM as a design requirement is also considered.

  • Hull form can be described numerically by two approaches, one is to describe a hull form with a set of curves("curve approach"), and the other is to describe it with surfaces directly("surface approach"). This paper describes the numerical definition scheme of hull form using curve approach method which defines the hull form by a set of curves consisting of 2-dimensional transverse section curves and 3-dimensional longitudinal curves. A set of curves in the hull form definition scheme is described by the modified cubic spline which modified the general parametric cubic spline in order to ensure a very smooth curvature distribution within the curve segment even though a curve segment has large tangent angle at its end points. Illustrative examples are given showing the application of the method to represent the hull form of SWATH ship and oceanographic research vessel. Also, examples for hull form transformation are shown by using this method connected with transformation technique.

  • Rumble strip was introduced in highway pavement for driver's safety in Korea on 2000. With proving its effectiveness, total length of highway with rumble strip has increased. This research team suggested a modified form of the existing rumble strip, which was placed on new concrete pavement during construction. The modified construction equipment was applied on test section at PyungTeak-Eumsung highway with some performance experiments. Through the equation of stopping sight distance proposed AASHTO, the modified form is safer than the existing one due to 0.65m of extra width. The indoor noise test showed that the modified form $3.5{\sim}9dB(A)$ noisier than the main pavement, which wasn't applied by rumble method. Therefore, it was one of alternatives to prevent sleeping. The modified form made the frequency effected on man's eye. There were no differences of the noise and vibration between modified form and existing one. However, that driver who participated on operating test on that section felt that the former was safer than the latter. It can be concluded that modified form can be applied to the new concrete pavement, that will decrease traffic accident.

  • Purpose: Rome criteria are considered the gold standard for diagnosing functional constipation. The modified Bristol stool form scale (m-BSFS) was validated to measure stool form in children. However, neither the potential use of the m-BSFS as a tool to facilitate the diagnosis of potential constipation, nor the agreement between m-BSFS and stool consistency by Rome has been studied. Our objective is to determine if m-BSFS is a reliable tool to facilitate detection of constipation; and the agreement between stool form by m-BSFS and hard stool criteria in Rome. Methods: A survey tool with the Rome III criteria and the m-BSFS was developed. A Likert-scale addressed frequency of each stool form on the m-BSFS. Responses to Rome III and m-BSFS were compared. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of the m-BSFS was 79.2% and 66.0% respectively; and in children <4 years. improved to 81.2% and 75.0% respectively. There was poor agreement between hard stools by m-BSFS and the painful or hard bowel movement question of Rome Criteria. Conclusion: The potential utility of m-BSFS as a reasonably good tool to facilitate the diagnosis of potential constipation in children is shown. The poor agreement between painful or hard stool question in Rome III, and ratings for hard stool on the m-BSFS illustrates that one's perception may differ between a question and a picture. A useful pictorial tool to appraise stool form may, thus, be a favorable complement in the process of enquiry about bowel habits in well-child care.

  • In an attempt to improve the maneuvering character of hull form renovated tuna purse seiner. A renovation was carried out on the 3 tuna purse seiner fishing vessel. To grasp the progress of maneuvering and resistance on ship B (730 ton class), new bulbous bow was only attached. The ship A (740 ton class) and C (600 ton class) were modified for new bulbous bow, enlarged slipway and rudder. And then the zigzag and the turning test were carried out. According to the turning test, the advance and the tactical diameter were improved very much for the modified ship. The sea trial was carried out for the original and modified ship A. It is showed that the results of sea trial corresponded with that of the tank test on the whole. In the result of the zigzag test on ship B, the turning ability was improved very much, but the yaw checking ability was deteriorated in just some degree. In the result of the zigzag test on ship C, the turning ability and yaw checking ability were remarkably improved. Ship C was greatly improved among the three ships for the maneuvering character of modified hull form.

  • Using the constructive algorithm proposed by Brayton and Tong, we analyze the stability of a modified coupled-form digital filter with quantization and overflow nonlinearities, and find the regions in the parameter plane where the filter is globally asymptotically stable. In these regions, the absence of zero-input limit cycles is ensured. This constructive algorithm gives less conservative stability results than the application of Jury-Lee stability criterion does.

  • This study investigates the static and dynamic structural analysis of symmetrical and asymmetrical coupled shear walls using the continuous and modified transfer matrix methods by idealizing the coupled shear wall as a three-field CTB-type replacement beam. The coupled shear wall is modeled as a continuous structure consisting of the parallel coupling of a Timoshenko beam in tension (with axial extensibility in the shear walls) and a shear beam (replacing the beam coupling effect between the shear walls). The variational method using the Hamilton principle is used to obtain the coupled differential equations and the boundary conditions associated with the model. Using the continuous method, closed-form analytical solutions to the differential equation for the coupled shear wall with uniform properties along the height are derived and a numerical solution using the modified transfer matrix is proposed to overcome the difficulty of coupled shear walls with non-uniform properties along height. The computational advantage of the modified transfer matrix method compared to the classical method is shown. The results of the numerical examples and the parametric analysis show that the proposed analytical and numerical model and method is accurate, reliable and involves reduced processing time for generalized static and dynamic structural analysis of coupled shear walls at a preliminary stage and can used as a verification method in the final stage of the project.

  • This paper presents a method of hull form design for the assistant vessel which is used both as a lighting boat and a fish carrying boat for the fleet of newly formated purse seiner vessels. The optimum hull form parameters are searched by the Sequential Quadratic Programing(SQP) method with the power estimation method of Van Oortmerssen. The prismatic curve is redesigned from that of the reference hull by the Lackenby method. Through the modification of the hull form by using a CAD system, the design procedure is completed. The resistance performances of the reference and the modified hull forms are estimated by using a numerical simulation method. Also, the estimation of seakeeping ability and stability for the modified hull forms are carried out. And then, an optimum hull form is proposed for the designed hull form. Ship model tests for the reference and the designed hull forms are carried out at ship model basin. The results of the experiments show that the effective horse power of the designed hull form is about 22% smaller than that of the reference hull form at design speed. The designed hull form proposed in this study will contribute to the development of the hull form for Korean large purse seiner vessels.
