  • Advanced high-tech weapons have enormous affect on combat strength in modern warfare. However, lack of maintenance can cause decrease in equipment operating rate as well as decrease in expectation on demonstrative effect of combat strength during wartime. Therefore it is essential for combat readiness that the optimum requirement of equipment maintenance cost are forecasted and included in the budget. In this paper, the trend of equipment maintenance cost about K-111 1/4t military vehicle is first analyzed by evaluating the performance data of field operation. Secondly, based on above analyzed results, the forecasting model of equipment maintenance cost is designed. Finally, by applying this forecasting model, suggestion and estimation method of equipment maintenance cost have presented for the foreseeable future.

  • In order to overcome jamming, a hysteresis tunable monolithic comparator circuit based on a 0.35 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process is suggested, designed, fabricated, measured and analyzed in this paper. To tune the threshold voltage of the hysteresis in the comparator circuit, two external digital bits are used with supply voltage of 3.3V. An improved variable hysteresis comparator circuit controlled by serial digital bits is suggested, designed and simulated to overcome jamming in modern warfare.

  • Tracking the tactical object is a fundamental affair in network-equipped modern warfare. Geodetic coordinate system based on longitude, latitude, and height is suitable to represent the location of tactical objects considering multi platform data fusion. The motion of tactical object described as a dynamic model requires an appropriate filtering to overcome the system and measurement noise in acquiring information from multiple sensors. This paper introduces the filter suitable for multi-sensor data fusion and tactical object tracking, particularly the unscented transform(UT) and its detail. The UT in Unscented Kalman Filter(UKF) uses a few samples to estimate nonlinear-propagated statistic parameters, and UT has better performance and complexity than the conventional linearization method. We show the effects of UT-based filtering via simulation considering practical tactical object tracking scenario.

  • Wireless tactical network (WTN) is the most important present-day technology enabling modern network centric warfare. It inherits many features from WMNs, since the WTN is based on existing wireless mesh networks (WMNs). However, it also has distinctive characteristics, such as hierarchical structures and tight QoS (Quality-of-Service) requirements. Little research has been conducted on hierarchical protocols to support various QoS in WMN. We require new protocols specifically optimized for WTNs. Control packets are generally required to find paths and reserve resources for QoS requirements, so data throughput is not degraded due to overhead. The fundamental solution is to adopt topology aggregation, in which a low tier node aggregates and simplifies the topology information and delivers it to a high tier node. The overhead from control packet exchange can be reduced greatly due to decreased information size. Although topology aggregation is effective for low overhead, it also causes the inaccuracy of topology information; thus, incurring low QoS support capability. Therefore, we need a new topology aggregation algorithm to achieve high accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new aggregation algorithm based on star topology. Noting the hierarchical characteristics in military and hierarchical networks, star topology aggregation can be used effectively. Our algorithm uses a limited number of bypasses to increase the exactness of the star topology aggregation. It adjusts topology parameters whenever it adds a bypass. Consequently, the result is highly accurate and has low computational complexity.

  • In modern warfare, securing time for preemptive response is recognized as an important factor of victory. The naval combat system, the core of naval forces, also strives to increase the effectiveness of engagement by improving its real-time information processing capabilities. As part of that, it is considered to use the TPR-tree in the naval combat system's target indexing because spatio-temporal searches can be performed quickly even as the number of target information increases. However, because the TPR-tree is slow to process updates, there is a limitation to handling frequent updates. In this paper, we present a method for improving the update performance of TPR-tree by applying the bottom-up update scheme, previously proposed for R-tree, to the TPR-tree. In particular, we analyze the causes of overlaps occurring when applying the bottom-up updates and propose ways to limit the MBR expansion to solve it. Our experimental results show that the proposed technique improves the update performance of TPR-tree from 3.5 times to 12 times while maintaining search performance.

  • As the role of high-value air assets(e.g., AWACS, JSTARS, Rivet Joint, E-2) becomes more critical in modern warfare, the air escort for these assets blocking attacks from any potential enemy fighter also becomes vital. Without the escort, the operations of the assets become restricted. However, such an escort is not always possible due to the limited flight time of the escort fighters. In this paper, we introduce an escort tactics for high-value air assets performed by the manned-unmanned teaming composed of a transport aircraft and UAVs(unmanned aerial vehicles). In this tactics, the transport aircraft plays the role of an aircraft carrier, which carries, launches, and retrieves the UAVs. The missions of UAVs in this tactics are to detect and engage enemy fighters. We also introduce the simulation result of this tactics to identify the UAVs' required capabilities and optimal maneuvering.

  • Modern warfare exhibit a NCW (Network Centric Warfare) aspect through quick situation awareness and Command and Control. And Tactical messages operate on various tactical data links (TDLs). For monitoring TDL messages processed by data link processor(DLP), message analysers are generally developed as a component during system development. In addition, in order to forward TDL messages processed by DLP to the message anayzer, the interface messages between DLP and message analysers should be defined interface control document(ICD). We propose the methods using UDP or TCP packets provided by TDL layers that are delivered to DLP without communicating directly with DLP. Depending on TDL message standards and Interface Control Documents(ICDs), we design the message analyzer which communicates with data link processor using internal messages. Using known header field information from the TDL application standard such as JREAP-C, we can quickly filter candidate packets against collected packets and use the full data size information contained in the headers to verify the completed message. Because the methods proposed in this paper do not communicate directly with DLP, the methods proposed in this paper are enable to analyze the TDL application messages such as JREAP-C or Link-K without constraints in existing methods that should be reflected in the system configuration and ICD.

  • In this paper, a novel resource scheduling, which is used for hub network based long distance airborne tactical communication, is proposed. Recently, some countries of the world has concentrated on developing data rate and networking performance of CDL, striving to keep pace with modern warfare, which is changed into NCW. And our government has also developed the next generation high capacity CDL. In hub network, a typical communication structure of CDL, hybrid FDMA/TDMA can be considered to exchange high rate data among multiple UAVs simultaneously, within limited bandwidth. However, due to different RTT and traffic size of UAV, idle time resource and unnecessary packet transmission delay can occur. And these losses can reduce entire efficiency of hub network in long distance communication. Therefore, in this paper, we propose RTT and data traffic size based UAV scheduling, which selects time/frequency resource of UAVs by using iterative sorting algorithm. The simulation results verified that the proposed scheme improves data rate and packet delay performance in low complexity.

  • In modern electronic warfare systems, the necessity of a more accurate estimation method based on non-AOA (arrival of angle) measurement, such as TDOA and FDOA, have been increased. The previous researches using single TDOA have been carried out in terms of not only the development of emitter location algorithms but also the enhancement of measurement accuracy. Recently, however, the combined TDOA/FDOA method is of considerable interest because it is able to estimate the velocity vector of a moving emitter and acquire a pair of TDOA and FDOA measurements from a single sensor pair. In this circumstance, it is needed to derive the required FDOA measurement accuracy in order that the TDOA/FDOA combined localization system outperforms the previous single TDOA localization systems. Therefore, we analyze the contribution of FDOA measurement accuracy to emitter location, then propose the criterion based on CRLB (Cramer-Rao lower bound). Simulations are included to examine the validity of the proposed criterion by using the Gauss-Newton algorithm.

  • In modern electronic warfare systems, a demand on the more accurate estimation method based on TDOA and FDOA has been increased. TDOA/FDOA localization consists of two-stage procedures; the extraction of information from signals, and the estimation of emitter location. CAF(complex ambiguity function) is known as a basic method in the extraction stage. However, when we extract TDOA and FDOA information from VHF(very high frequency) communication signals, conventional CAF algorithms may not work within a permitted time because of much computation. Therefore, in this paper, an improved sequential estimation algorithm based on CAF is proposed for effective calculation of extracting TDOA and FDOA estimates in terms of computational complexity. The proposed method is compared with the conventional CAF-based algorithms through simulation. In addition, we derive the optimal performance based on the CRLB(Cramer-Lao lower bound) to check the extraction performance of the proposed method.
