  • The present work describes a new time marching procedure for structural dynamics analyses. In this novel technique, time integration parameters are automatically evaluated according to the properties of the model. Such parameters are locally defined, allowing the user to input a numerical dissipation property for each element, which defines the amount of numerical dissipation to be introduced. Since the integration parameters are locally defined as a function of the structural element itself, the time marching technique adapts according to the model, providing enhanced accuracy. The new methodology is based on displacement-velocity relations and no computation of accelerations is required. Furthermore, the method is second order accurate, it has guaranteed stability, it is truly self-starting and it allows highly controllable algorithm dissipation in the higher modes. Numerical results are presented and compared to those provided by the Newmark and the Bathe methods, illustrating the good performance of the new time marching procedure.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the seismic resistant capacity inherent in ductile moment resisting frames using two different joint modeling. The difference between these two models is the capability for considering the panel zone deformation. For this purpose, 5 story steel moment frame is designed in compliance to the Korean seismic design provisions and the steel structure design standard. Nonlinear Static Procedure(NSP) and Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure(NDP) of this structure are carried out using two different joint models. Based on the results of NSP and NDP, the sensitivity of the response to analytical modeling is appraised. Also, it is proposed that for the highrise steel structures, the joint deformation should be accounted properly by the analytical model.

  • Prestressing tendons of the nuclear containment building dome are arranged in a non-axisymmetric manner. However, simple axisymmetric modeling of the containment building is often employed to estimate the structural behavior for, e.g. the ultimate pressure, which requires the axisymmetric approximation of the actual tendon arrangements of the dome. A procedure is proposed that can devise the actual 3-dimensional tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model. A numerical example of the CANDU type is presented to verify the procedure and to estimate the amount of approximation.

  • This paper, Part 1, describes the effective dual-input PSS parameter design procedure for the IEEE Type PSS2A against the Dangjin 612 MVA thermal plant's EX2000 excitation system. The suggested tuning technique used the model-based PSS tuning method and consisted of three steps: 1) generation system modeling; 2) determination of PSS2A model parameters using linear, time-domain transient and 3-phase simultaneous analyses, and 3) field testing and verification, which are described in Part 2. The effective PSS2A model parameters of EX2000 system in the Dangjin T/P #4 were designed according to the suggested procedure, and verified by using three analyses.

  • This paper proposes a novel iterative procedure for the design of planar reinforced concrete structures in which the reinforcement is designed for stresses calculated in a nonlinear finite element analysis. The procedure is intended as an alternative to strut and tie modeling for the design of complex structures like deep beams with openings. Practical reinforcement arrangements are achieved by grouping the reinforcement into user defined horizontal and vertical bands. Two alternative strategies are proposed for designing the reinforcement which are designated A and B. Design constraints are specified in terms of permissible stresses and strains in the reinforcement and strains in the concrete. A case study of a deep beam with an opening is presented to illustrate the method. Comparisons are made between design strategies A and B of which B is shown to be most efficient. The resulting reinforcement weights are also shown to compare favorably with those previously reported in the literature.

  • This article presents an integrated modeling approach for coupled analysis of heat transfer and microstructure evolution in welding carbon steel. The modeling procedure utilizes commercial [mite element code ABAQUS/Standard as the platform for solving the equation of heat conduction. User subroutines that implement computational thermodynamics and kinetics models are integrated with the FEA code to compute the transient microstructure evolution. In this study, the integrated models are applied to simulate the hot-tap repair welding of carbon steel pipeline. Microstructural components are treated as user output variables. Based on the predicted microstructure and cooling rates, hardness distributions in the welds were also predicted. The predicted microstructure and hardness distribution were found in good agreement with metallographic examinations and hardness measurements. This study demonstrates the applicability of computational models for the development of welding procedure for in-service pipeline repair.

  • In this study, the procedure of interpolation surface modeling on bicubic spline patch equation and NC machining are presented. The procedure consists of three parts : patch modeling, cutter location data generation, post processing and NC milling machining. For generation of the cutter location data, tangent vectors and units normal vectors on the patch must be calculated. In order to investigate the properties of the interpolation surface created by bicubic spline patch, two kinds of end conditions, clamped end condition and relaxed end condition, were applied in this study. The shape of the patch depends on the magnitide of the tangent vectors and twist vectors at the corners of bicubic surface patch. the patch generated by relaxed end condition more approximated to the surface patch which was given.

  • In many cases, fuzzy modeling has a defect that the design procedure cannot be theoretically justified. To overcome this difficulty, we suggest a new design method for fuzzy model by combining genetic algorithm(GA) and mush set theory. GA, which has the advantages is optimization, and rule base. However, it is some what time consuming, so are introduce rough set theory to the rule reduction procedure. As a result, the decrease of learning time and the considerable rate of rule reduction is achieved without loss of useful information. The preposed algorithm is composed of three stages; First stage is quasi-optimization of fuzzy model using GA(coarse tuning). Next the obtained rule base is reduced by rough set concept(rule reduction). Finally we perform re-optimization of the membership functions by GA(fine tuning). To check the effectiveness of the suggested algorithm, examples for time series prediction are examined.

  • A method of DID generating step is suggested for applying the XML technology to the information data extracted from the Legacy databases. The IDREF-ID attribute reference modeling is used for representing the complex relationship between tables and excluding the prearranged step of ID insertion. ID Insertion procedure is performed in parallel with investigating the relationship between the tables and the frequent search direction between the table data. As a result, ID insertion procedure can be performed simultaneously with understanding of the IDREF-ID relationship between tables, and DID are also generated.

  • This paper presents a procedure far design, modeling and analysis of a fine positioning stage. The stage considered here is composed of flexure hinges, piezoelectric actuators and their peripherals. Through a series of analysis, the structural analysis model is simplified as a rigid body(the moving part) and springs (the flexure hinges). An experimental design procedure is applied to determine optimum design variables for flexure hinges. The optimum variables are validated through a numerical test. A sensitivity analysis on the notch positions is also performed to obtain a guideline of fabrication accuracy for the stage.
