  • The Timoshenko beam model has been known as the most accurate model for representing beam structures. However, the Timoshenko beam model may give rise to a significant error when it is applied to multi-stepped beam structures. This paper is intended to demonstrate the modeling error of Timoshenko beam based finite element model for multi-stepped beam structures and to suggest a new modeling method to improve the accuracy. A tentative bending spring is introduced into the stepped section to represent the softening effect due to the presence of step. This paper also proposes a finite element modeling method in the light with the tentative bending spring model for the step softening effect. The proposed method rigorously adapts computation results from a commercial finite element code. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through a series of simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper, a practical SPICE model for an IGBT and a PiN diode is proposed based on the Finite Differential Method (FDM). Other than the conventional Fourier model and the Hefner model, the excess carrier distribution can be accurately solved by a fast FDM in the SPICE simulation tool. In order to improve the accuracy of the SPICE model, the Taguchi method is adopted to calibrate the extracted parameters. This paper presents a numerical modelling approach of an IGBT and a PIN diode, which are also verified by SPICE simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a HMM(Hidden Markov Model)-based segmentation method to model shadows as well as foreground and background regions. The shadow of moving objects often keeps from visual tracking. We propose an HMM-based segmentation method which classifies each object in real time. In the case of traffic monitoring movies, the effectiveness of the proposed method was proved by experiments.

  • Parameter modification of a linear finite element model(FEM) based on modal sensitivity matrix is usually performed through an effort to match FEM modal data to experimental ones. However, there are cases where this method can't be applied successfully; lack of reliable modal data and ill-conditioning of the modal sensitivity matrix constitute such cases. In this research, a novel concept of introducing feedback loops to the conventional modal test setup is proposed. This method uses closed-loop natural frequency data for parameter modification to overcome the problems associated with the conventional method based on modal sensitivity matrix. We proposed the whole procedure of parameter modification using the closed-loop natural frequency data including the modal sensitivity modification and controller design method. Proposed controller design method is efficient in changing modes. Numerical simulation of parameter estimation based on time-domain input/output data is provided to demonstrate the estimation performance of the proposed method.

  • The seismic safety of the shear wall structure can be assessed through seismic fragility analysis, which requires high computational costs in estimating seismic demands. Accordingly, machine learning methods have been applied to such fragility analyses in recent years to reduce the numerical analysis cost, but it still remains a challenging task. Therefore, this study uses the ensemble machine learning method to present an improved framework for developing a more accurate seismic demand model than the existing ones. To this end, a rank-based selection method that enables determining an excellent model among several single machine learning models is presented. In addition, an index that can evaluate the degree of overfitting/underfitting of each model for the selection of an excellent single model is suggested. Furthermore, based on the selected single machine learning model, we propose a method to derive a more accurate ensemble model based on the bagging method. As a result, the seismic demand model for which the proposed framework is applied shows about 3-17% better prediction performance than the existing single machine learning models. Finally, the seismic fragility obtained from the proposed framework shows better accuracy than the existing fragility methods.

  • In this study, we proposed the fuzzy modeling method and designed a model-based logic controller for Activated and Sludge Process(A.S.P.) in sewage treatment. The identification of the structure of fuzzy implications is carreid out by use of fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm. And to identify the parameters of fuzzy implications, we used the complex and the least square method. To tune the premise parameters automatically the complex method is implemented. The model-based fuzzy controller is designed by rules generated from the identified A.S.P. fuzzy model. The feasibility of the proposed approach is evaluated through the identification of the fuzzy model to describe an input-output relation of the A.S.P.. The performance of identified model-based fuzzy controller is evaluated through the computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a model-based method of estimating the velocity of a moving object from a series of images. The proposed method utilizes Kalman filtering technique. Assuming that the motion is described by an affine transformation, we construct a discrete-time state variable model of the motion based on the dynamic motion imagery modeling technique proposed by Schalkoff. Using this state variable model, we derive a Kalman filter algorithm. Some simulation results are presented to show that the proposed Kalman filter algorithm is superior to a simple least square method without a model.

  • In radar tracking, since the sensor measures range, azimuth and elevation angle of a target, the measurement equation is nonlinear and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is applied to nonlinear estimation. The conventional EKF has been widely used as a nonlinear filter for radar tracking, but the considerably large measurement error due to the linearization of nonlinear function in highly nonlinear situations may deteriorate the performance of the EKF To solve this problem, a fuzzy-model-based Kalman filter (FMBKF) is proposed for radar tracking. The FMBKF uses a local model approximation based on a TS fuzzy model instead of a Jacobian matrix to linearize nonlinear measurement equation. The hybrid GA and RLS method is used to identify the premise and the consequent parameters and the rule numbers of this TS fuzzy model. In two-dimensional radar tracking problem, the proposed method is compared with the conventional EKF.

  • In this paper, we propose a stable active contour based tracking method which utilizes the bimodal segmentation technique to obtain a background color diminished image frame. The proposed method overcomes the drawback of the Mansouri model which is liable to fall into a local minimum state when colors appear in the background that are similar to the target colors. The Mansouri model has been a foundation for active contour based tracking methods, since it is derived from a probability based interpretation. By stabilizing the model with the proposed speed function, the proposed model opens the way to extend probability based active contour tracking for practical applications.

  • This paper presents a simple and new digital redesign algorithm for fussy-model-based controllers. In the first stage, a continuous-time TS fuzzy model is constructed for a given continuous-time nonlinear system and a corresponding continuous-time fuzzy-model-based controller is established based on the existing controller synthesis algorithms. In the second stage, the continuous-time fuzzy-model-based controller is converted to equivalent discrete-time fuzzy-model-based controller, aiming at maintaining the property of the analogue controlled system, which are called intelligent digital redesign. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the digital control of inverted pendulum system to shows the effectiveness and the feasibility of the method.
