  • Food waste is both an industrial and residential source of pollution, and there has been a great need for food waste reduction. As a preliminary step in this study, waste reduction is quantitatively modeled. This study presents two models based on kinetics: a simple kinetic model and a mass transport-shrinking model. In the simple kinetic model, the smaller is the reaction rate constant ratio k1, the lower the rate of conversion from the raw material to intermediate products. Accordingly, the total elapsed reaction time becomes shorter. In the mass transport-shrinking model, the smaller is the microbial decomposition resistance versus the liquid mass transfer resistance, the greater is the reduction rate of the radius of spherical waste particles. Results showed that the computed reduction of waste mass in the second model agreed reasonably with that obtained from a few experimantal trials of biodegradation, in which the microbial effect appeared to dominate. All calculations were performed using MATLAB 2020 on PC.

  • Understanding the dynamics of proteins is essential to gain insight into biological functions of proteins. The protein dynamics is delineated by conformational fluctuation (i.e. thermal vibration), and thus, thermal vibration of proteins has to be understood. In this paper, a simple mechanical model was considered for understanding protein's dynamics. Specifically, a mechanical vibration model was developed for understanding the large protein dynamics related to biological functions. The mechanical model for large proteins was constructed based on simple elastic model (i.e. Tirion's elastic model) and model reduction methods (dynamic model condensation). The large protein structure was described by minimal degrees of freedom on the basis of model reduction method that allows one to transform the refined structure into the coarse-grained structure. In this model, it is shown that a simple reduced model is able to reproduce the thermal fluctuation behavior of proteins qualitatively comparable to original molecular model. Moreover, the protein's dynamic behavior such as collective dynamics is well depicted by a simple reduced mechanical model. This sheds light on that the model reduction may provide the information about large protein dynamics, and consequently, the biological functions of large proteins.

  • This paper proposes the model order reduction with pass band error reduction in the frequency domain of discrete time linear systems. The algorithm is the new method of reduced order model which reduces passband error by changing controllability and observability gramian used with weighted functions. A numerical example shows that this algorithm has lower passband error than balanced w&l and weighted function characteristics in frequency domain.

  • An AMD control system is usually built based on the original model of a target building. As a result, the fact leads a large calculation workload exists. Therefore, the orders of a structural model should be reduced appropriately. Among various model-reduction methods, a suitable reduced-order model is important to high-rise buildings. Meanwhile, a partial structural information is discarded directly in the model-reduction process, which leads to the accuracy reduction of its controller design. In this paper, an optimal technique is selected through comparing several common model-reduction methods. Then, considering the dynamic characteristics of a high-rise building, an improved balanced truncation (BT) method is proposed for establishing its reduced-order model. The abandoned structural information, including natural frequencies, damping ratios and modal information of the original model, is reconsidered. Based on the improved reduced-order model, a new reduced-order controller is designed by a regional pole-placement method. A high-rise building with an AMD system is regarded as an example, in which the energy distribution, the control effects and the control parameters are used as the indexes to analyze the performance of the improved reduced-order controller. To verify its effectiveness, the proposed methodology is also applied to a four-storey experimental frame. The results demonstrate that the new controller has a stable control performance and a relatively short calculation time, which provides good potential for structural vibration control of high-rise buildings.

  • The goal of any Model Order Reduction (MOR) technique is to build a model of order lower than the one of the real model, so that the computational effort is reduced, and the ability to estimate the input-output mapping of the original system is preserved in an important region of the input space. Actually, since only a subset of the input space is of interest, the matching is required only in this subset of the input space. In this contribution, the consequences on the achieved accuracy of adopting different reduction technique patterns is discussed mainly with reference to a linear case study.

  • Currently most practical vibration and structural problems in automotive suspensions require the use of the finite element method to obtain their structural responses. When the finite element model has a very large number of degrees of freedom the harmonic and dynamic analyses are computationally too expensive to repeat within a feasible design process time. To alleviate the computational difficulty, this paper presents a moment-matching based model order reduction (MOR) which reduces the number of degrees of freedom of the original finite element model and speeds up the necessary simulations with the reduced-size models. The moment-matching model reduction via the Arnoldi process is performed directly to ANSYS finite element models by software mor4ansys. Among automotive suspension components, a knuckle is taken as an example to demonstrate the advantages of this approach for vibration simulation. The frequency and transient dynamic responses by the MOR are compared with those by the mode superposition method.

  • Model reduction from high order systems to low order systems in frequency domain is considered four point (${\angle}$G(jw)=0, - ${\pi}/2$, ${\pi}$, and -3${\pi}$/2) instead of two point (${\angle}$G(jw) = - ${\pi}$/2,- ${\pi}$) of existing method in Nyquist curve. The Performances of reduced order model by proposed approach is similar to original model. In this paper, we proposed a new tuning algorithm for PID controller using model reduction in frequency domain. Simulations for some examples with varies dynamic characteristics are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed tuning algorithm for PID controller using model reduction.

  • A new type geometric and mathematical network reduction model is introduced. Large-scale network is analyzed with analytic approach. The graph has many nodes, branches and loops. Circuit equation are obtained from these elements and connection rule. In this paper, the analytic relation between voltage source has a mutual different graphic property. Node-reduction procedure is achieved with this circuit property. Consequently voltage source value is included into the adjacent node-analyzing equation. A resultant model equations are reduced as much as voltage source number. Matrix rank is (n-1-k), where n, k is node and voltage source number. The reduction procedure is described and verified with geometric principle and circuit theory. Matrix type circuit equation can be composed with this technique. The last results shall be calculated by using computer.

  • Under a pyro-processing concept, an electrolytic reduction process has been developed to reduce uranium oxide in molten salt by electrochemical means as a part of spent fuel treatment process development. Accordingly, a model based on electrochemical theory is required to design a reactor for the electrolytic reduction process. In this study, a 1D model based on the phase-field theory, which explains phase separation behaviors was developed to simulate electrolytic reduction of uranium oxide. By adopting parameters for diffusion of oxygen elements in a pellet and electrochemical reaction rate at the surface of the pellet, the model described the behavior of inward reduction well and revealed that the current depends on the internal diffusion of the oxygen element. The model for the electrolytic reduction is expected to be used to determine the optimum conditions for large scale reactor design. It is also expected that the model will be applied to simulate the integration of pyro-processing.
