This paper is experimental and numerical research results of performing centrifuge model tests to investigate the geotechnical engineering behavior of slag compaction pile as a substitute of sand compaction pile. In order to find the geotechnical engineering characteristics of the soft clay and the slag used in centrifuge model experiments, basic soil property tests, consolidation test, permeability tests and triaxial compression tests were performed. For centrifuge model tests, slags with changing relative density were used and their bearing capacity, stress concentrations in between pile and soft clay, settlement characteristics, and failure modes were investigated. As a results of centrifuge model tests, it was found that the bearing, capacity of model was increased with increasing density of slag pile and general shear failures were occured. Miniature soil pressure gauges were installed on model pile and soft ground respectively and thus vertical stress acting on them were measured. Stress concentration ratio was found to be in the range of 2.0~3.0. Bearing capacity obtained from the model test with slag was greater than that from the model test with a sand having the identical layout to each other. Thus it was confirmed the slag was an appropriate substitution of pile for sand.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the behavior of the concrete pile under the horizontal loads by the model tests in laboratory. The rock ground was modeled by the concrete of about 30MPa, and a model pile was made of some mortar with the capacity of 24MPa. The diameter(D) and length(L) of a model pile was each 1200mm and 1800mm. The embedment depth into the concrete block was varied with 1.0D, 1.5D, and 2.0D in the model tests. The results of model tests showed that the lateral resistance of a pile with the embedment depth of 2.0D was more large than other cases, and the lateral displacement of yielding was similar.
The paper is to show the behavior of composit ground which is installed with sheet pile in soft soil improved by sand compaction pile. The results of load-settlement relationship, earth pressure, stress concentration characteristics, and final water content were obtained by centrifuge model test. Two cases of tests, installation of sheet pile on the corner and both side of the loading plate for the improved SCP ground which was designed twice of the footing width, were performed for the tests under the vertical and horizontal loading and both side of corner. Finite element program(CRISP) for sand compaction pile using elasto-plastic model and numerical analysis for soft soil using modified cam-clay constitutive equation were compared and analized with the results of model tests. The result of analysis show the increased bearing capacity of soil after, SCP and sheet pile was installed.
The model tests of short pile with very small pile length/diameter(L/D) were performed in this paper. Varying the pile diameter, length, and the lateral loading point, the lateral resistance and behavior of very short pile were studied in this model tests. The experimental and analytical results are as follows. The lateral ultimate resistance of short pile in sands was the maximum at the point of h/L=0.75, regardless of pile length/diameter(L/D). As the pile diameter is larger, the lateral ultimate resistance of pile with L/D=1 decreases a little and the lateral resistance increases according to the ratio of pile length/diameter. As the lateral loads are acting on the pile, the displacement of pile head is maximum at the pile top of h/L=0, but minimum at the middle point of the pile. And if the loading point is under the middle of pile, the displacement of pile head occurs oposite in the loading direction, but its magnitude is very small.
This paper presents results km a series of model tests oil vertically loaded single piles to compare the behaviors of H and pipe piles under the same ground condition. The aims of this paper were to compare the bearing capacity of H-pile md pipe piles under in the same ground condition and to estimate the effect of gravity acceleration and relative soil density. Relative density of soil were made to be 40%, 80% and embedded length of pile on sand was increased by 10, 12, 14, 16 times of the diameter of pile, respectively. As a results of test series, allowable load of H-pile is from 6.4% to 18.2% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 80% and from 9.1% to 39.4% larger than allowable load of pipe pile in relative density 40%. As a results of numerical analysis, we were predicted behaviour of stress-displacement of pile with model test. In the case of relative density 80% and 40%, bearing capacity of H pile represent from 17.74% to 18.6% larger than allowable load of pipe pile.
Model tests on free standing pile groups and piled footings with varying a pile spacing in two layered soils are carried out. The influence of pile cap on the behaviors of end bearing pile groups is analyzed by comparing the bearing behavior in piled footings with those in a single pile, a shallow footing(cap alone) and free standing pile groups. From the test results, it is found that the bearing characteristics of cap-soil-pile system are related with load levels and pile spacings. Before yield, the bearing resistance by cap is not fully mobilized, however, as the applied load increases, the bearing resistance of cap approaches to that of cap alone and settlement hardening occurs after yield due to the compaction caused by the contact pressure between cap and soil. By the cap-soil-pile interaction, shaft friction and point resistance of piles considerably increase with dependency of pile spacings. In two layered soil, the increasing effect of dilatancy in dense sandy soil adjacent to pile tips, increases the point resistance of pile.
In case that pile cap is in direct contact with underlying soil, the bearing mechanism for pile groups, including direct bearing effect of cap and its induced influence on pile-soil-cap interaction, should be properly considered. In this paper, the effects of pile caps on behaviors of pile groups in sandy soils were investigated by model tests, which consist of tests on 3 by 3 pile groups with/without contact on subsoil, single pile with/without contact and cap as a shallow foundation. Also, the influences of pile spacing in group piles on contact effects were investigated. The test results showed that the load carrying capacity of pile cap was large enough not to be ignored. However, the interaction effects due to contact between cap and subsoils were not revealed obviously in working load range. And in the design of pile groups, the bearing effect of pile cap when contacted with subsoils, can be reflected by simply summing up load settlement behaviors of each cap and group piles without contact.
Pile-supported wharves, port structures that support the upper deck, are installed on sloping ground. The sloping ground should be covered with a rubble mound or artificial blocks to protect the interior material from erosion caused by wave force. The behavior of the pile may vary during an earthquake if a rubble mound is installed on the slope. However, studies evaluating the effect of rubble mound on the pile during an earthquake are limited. Here, we performed dynamic centrifuge model tests to evaluate the dynamic behavior of piles installed in a slope reinforced with rubble mound. In the structure, some sections (single-pile, 2×2 group-pile) were selected for the experiment. The moment of the group-pile decreased by up to 26% upon installation of the rubble mound, whereas the moment of the single-pile increased by up to 41%, thus demonstrating conflicting results.
