  • Dimethomorph is a novel fungicide with a high level of activity against diseases induced by certain Oomycetes, including fungal populations that are resistant to other products. In several ways, this fungicide illustrates the opportunities and challenges presented by many modern pesticides. The specific mode of action, which affects cell wall formation, is associated with a very high level of performance and low dose rates under field conditions. These low dose rates, combined with a low level of toxicity to non-target organisms present an outstanding safety profile. This same highly-specific mode of action, however, limits the spectrum of activity and suggests the need for a resistance management plan, both of which must be addressed in new product development. In addition, the biological and physiochemical properties of this, and other new products are not adequately described by the traditional classification of fungicides into“protectant”and“systemic”types. These unique profiles provide novel and useful products for disease control.

  • A bacteriocin was isolated from the supernatant fluid of M17G broth culture of Lactococcus sp. HY 449 strain, which showed strong inhibitory activity against the growth of selective indicator strain, Lactobacillus fermentum IFO3023. When the bacteriocin wasa added to the growing indicator cells or cell suspensions, viable cells and optical density were density were decreased, indicating bacteriolytic mode of action. Electron microscopic observation of indicator cells treated with bacteriocin revealed apparent damages on the cell surface and eventual lysis of cell walls.

  • The effects of nearby residents and the public by the residual contamination from the decommissioning of nuclear facilities should comply with the dose criteria, and whether additional remediation action is necessary from the ALARA perspective must be determined. Therefore, we analyzed the requirements of ALARA action levels and performed preliminary ALARA evaluation. The ratio of residual contamination concentration to DCGL was calculated for the basement fill and the building occupancy mode. The results showed that the additional remediation actions below DCGL are not justified. In addition, we analyzed the effect of remediation area. It was noted that the increase of the remediation area showed a positive correlation with the Conc/DCGL value in the basement fill mode. On the other hand, in the building occupancy mode, since the floor area of the building is the target of remediation and has the effect of increasing the same as the evaluation area of the building occupants, but due to the difference in the amount of increase, the Conc/DCGL showed a negative correlation. We expect the approach and method of ALARA evaluation can be utilized for concrete cost-benefit calculation during the decommissioning or at the time of remediation.

  • There has been continuing interest in the development of synthetic and natural compounds that modify the immune response particularly for the treatment of AIDS and cancer. During the past fifty years, numerous scientific studies have been published on ginseng. Modem human studies have investigated preventive effect of ginseng on several kinds of cancer, its long term immunological effect on HIV patients, its effect on cell mediated immune functions in healthy volunteers. Similarly non clinical studies on animal model system have studied the chemopreventive action of ginseng on cancer and immunological properties of ginseng. The precise mechanism of action of ginseng, however, not clearly understood. Considering its wide-ranging therapeutic effects, this study is being undertaken to elucidate the general mode of action of ginseng, especially to test our hypothesis that its biological action may be mediated by the immune system.

During the past fifty years, numerous scientific studies have been published on ginseng (Foster and Chongxi, 1992). Modern human studies have investigated preventive effect of ginseng on several kinds of cancer (Yun et al, 1993,Yun, 1995,Yun and Choi, 1998), its long term immunological effect on HIV patients (Sankang, 1989, Cho et al, 1997), its effect on cell mediated immune functions in healthy volunteers (Scaglione et al, 1990). Similarly non clinical studies on animal model system have studied the chemopreventive action of ginseng on cancer (Kumar, 1993,98) and immunological properties of ginseng (Kim et al, 1990, Tomoda et al, 1993, Yun et al, 1993, Mizuno et al, 1994,Lee et al, 1997, Park et al, 2001,Yoshikawa et al, 2001, Wang et al, 2001). • Service FMEA may yield several possible corrective actions for each failure mode with large RPN. Corrective actions for each service failure are usually interrelated with the customers and environmental elements of the service system. SWOT analysis can provide an effective way to analyze the inner and outer environmental impacts for each corrective action. In this paper, we suggest a way for selecting and ranking corrective strategy in service operation based on SWOT analysis. Every candidate of corrective action strategy is ranked and evaluated on the basis of the impact factors of the SWOT variables, correlations between possible corrective actions and SWOT variables, and RPNs of service failures. The most desirable set of corrective actions is selected considering the preference score of each corrective action, required resources and budgetary allowance. The proposed methodology is demonstrated with an illustrative example.

  • This paper presents, basic concepts on deformation models for D-regions critical to shear. Strut-and-tie models are used to construct for deformation estimation at yielding and ultimate deformation. A generic: strut-and-tie model is proposed to investigate deformation patterns and failure mode identification. Superposition of the basic models enables us to explain deformation limits of arch action and truss action. Displacement at yielding is assessed by consideration of deformation of reinforcing steel only while the ultimate displacement is calculated by limits of ultimate strain of concrete in compression and failure mechanisms.

  • This paper aims to investigate modeling scripts based on the mode of group interaction in a computer-supported collaborative learning environment. Based on a literature review, this paper assumes that group interaction and its mode would have strong influence on the online collaborative learning process, and furthermore lead learners to create and share significant knowledge within a group. This paper deals with two different modes of group interaction- distributed and shared interaction. Distributed interaction depends on the external representation of individual knowledge, while shared interaction is concerned with sharing knowledge in group action. In order to facilitate these group interactions, this paper emphasizes the utilization of appropriate CSCL scripts, and then proposes the conceptual framework of CSCL scripts which integrate the existing scripts such as implicit, explicit, internal and external scripts. By means of the model regarding CSCL scripts based on the mode of group interaction, the implications for research on the design of CSCL scripts are explored.
