  • Structural damage detection, damage localization and severity estimation of jacket platforms, based on calculating modal strain energy is presented in this paper. In the structure, damage often causes a loss of stiffness in some elements, so modal parameters; mode shapes and natural frequencies, in the damaged structure are different from the undamaged state. Geometrical location of damage is detected by computing modal strain energy change ratio (MSECR) for each structural element, which elements with higher MSECR are suspected to be damaged. For each suspected damaged element, by computing cross-modal strain energy (CMSE), damage severity as the stiffness reduction factor -that represented the ratios between the element stiffness changes to the undamaged element stiffness- is estimated. Numerical studies are demonstrated for a three dimensional, single bay, four stories frame of the existing jacket platform, based on the synthetic data that generated from finite element model. It is observed that this method can be used for damage detection of this kind of structures.

  • A modeling method for the modal analysis of cantilever plates undergoing in-plane translational acceleration is presented in this paper. Cartesian deformation variables are employed to derive the equations of motion and the resulting equations are transformed into dimensionless forms. To obtain the modal equation from the equations of motion, the in-plane equilibrium strain measures are substituted into the strain energy expression based on Von Karman strain measures. The effects of two dimensionless parameters (related to acceleration and aspect ratio) on the modal characteristics of accelerated plates are investigated through numerical studies.

  • A damage detection algorithm using vibration modes is applied to the ring structures and the modal behaviors of the slightly asymmetric rings are examined. Mode shape change, MSER(modal strain energy ratio) and MCR(modal curvature ratio) are investigated to identify the locations of faults or damages The above fault detection parameters are calculated and compared by the finite element analysis on rings with designed local damages. Damages are modeled as a reduced stiffness in the analysis The results show that MSER and MCR can be proper parameters to detect local damages in the ring structures.

  • An adaptive-scale damage detection strategy based on a wavelet finite element model (WFEM) for thin plate structures is established in this study. Equations of motion and corresponding lifting schemes for thin plate structures are derived with the tensor products of cubic Hermite multi-wavelets as the elemental interpolation functions. Sub-element damages are localized by using of the change ratio of modal strain energy. Subsequently, such damages are adaptively quantified by a damage quantification equation deduced from differential equations of plate structure motion. WFEM scales vary spatially and change dynamically according to actual needs. Numerical examples clearly demonstrate that the proposed strategy can progressively locate and quantify plate damages. The strategy can operate efficiently in terms of the degrees-of-freedom in WFEM and sensors in the vibration test.

  • A suitable ground motion intensity measure (IM) plays a crucial role in the seismic performance assessment of a structure. In this paper, we introduce a scalar IM for use in evaluating the seismic response of single-layer reticulated domes. This IM is defined as the weighted geometric mean of the spectral acceleration ordinates at the periods of the dominant vibration modes of the structure considered, and the modal strain energy ratio of each dominant vibration mode is the corresponding weight. Its applicability and superiority to 11 other existing IMs are firstly investigated in terms of correlation with the nonlinear seismic response, efficiency and sufficiency using the results of incremental dynamic analyses which are performed for a typical single-layer reticulated dome. The hazard computability of this newly proposed IM is also briefly discussed and illustrated. A conclusion is drawn that this dominant vibration mode-based scalar IM has the characteristics of strong correlation, high efficiency, good sufficiency as well as hazard computability, and thereby is appropriate for use in the prediction of seismic response of single-layer reticulated domes.

  • This paper presents the vibration analysis of cracked ceramic-reinforced aluminum composite beams by using a method based on changes in modal strain energy. The crack is considered to be straight. The effective properties of composite materials of the beams are estimated through Mori-Tanaka micromechanical model. Comparison study and numerical simulations with various parameters; ceramic volume fraction, reinforcement aspect ratio, ratio of the reinforcement Young's modulus to the matrix Young's modulus and ratio of the reinforcement density to the matrix density are taken into investigation. Results demonstrate the pronounced effects of these parameters on intact and cracked ceramic aluminum beams.

  • This paper investigates the effectiveness of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, SWNT, in improving the dynamic behavior of cracked Aluminium alloy, Al-alloy, beams by using a method based on changes in modal strain energy. Mechanical properties of composite materials are estimated by the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka method. The influence of SWNT volume fraction, SWNT aspect ratio, crack depth and crack location on the natural frequencies of the damaged 3D randomly oriented SWNT reinforced Al-alloy beams are examined. Results demonstrate the significant advantages of SWNT in reducing the effect of cracks on the natural frequencies of Al-alloy beams.
