  • At present wireless internet access service is available through the 3G network, mobile WiMAX and WiFi anytime and anywhere. In this environment where there are various networks, users should be able to select specific networks depending on different situations. And it is necessary to provide mobility support between homogeneous and between heterogenous networks. Given this situation, the many proposals have been presented to link 3G, which has the largest service area among various networks, with mobile WiMAX(IEEE 802.16e), or with WiFi(IEEE 802.11). But, recently, with the increasing volume of wireless internet use and wireless internet data, due to the advents of net-book, e-book and smart phone, the service area of WiFi and mobile WiMAX has rapidly expanded. Especially, the availability of real-time application such as internet phone has led to the relative shrinking of the proportion of 3G mobile communication network giving conventional voice service, and enlargement of those of wireless internet access networks like WiFi and mobile WiMAX. This paper suggests a handover scheme based on PMIPv6, whitch support mobility between WiFi and mobile WiMAX, and minimizes handover delay. In this scheme, the mobile node has a dual stack structure composed of two interfaces-WiFi and mobile WiMAX. Since WiFi dose not support mobility, it is suggested that the mobile node have the capacity to deal with handover signaling between gateway in case of handover between homogeneous networks. This handover scheme, suggested comparing with current handovers between homogeneous networks, has proved, in its analytic evaluation, to be able to reduce handover, transmission, and signaling overhead.

  • The IEEE 802.16-2004 standard has a security sub-layer in the MAC layer called, Privacy Key Management (PKM). However, several researches have been published to address the security vulnerabilities of IEEE 802.16-2004. After the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, a new advanced and revised standard was released as the IEEE 802.16e-2005 amendment which is foundation of Mobile WiMAX network supporting handoffs and roaming capabilities. PKMv2 in Mobile WiMAX includes EAP authentication, AES-based authenticated encryption, and CMAC or HMAC message protection. However, Mobile WiMAX still has a problem of security architecture such as a disclosure of security context in network entry, a lack of secure communication in network domain, and a necessity of efficient handover supporting mutual authentication because Mobile WiMAX security has mainly concentrated on between SS and BS communication. Based on the investigation results, we propose a novel mobile WiMAX security architecture, called RObust and Secure MobilE WiMAX (ROSMEX), to prevent the new security vulnerabilities.

  • Together with the GPS-based approach, geolocation through mobile communication networks is a key technology for location-based service. Since the Mobile WiMAX system is considered as a candidate for fourth-generation mobile systems, it is important to investigate its location capability. The geolocation of Mobile WiMAX can be realized when the preamble symbols in the down-link channel are appropriately used for a TDOA (Time-Difference-of-Arrival) approach. However, the cellular structure of Mobile WiMAX inevitably generates co-channel interference, and it is difficult for the mobile terminal to acquire distance measurements from multiple base stations. Therefore, for geolocation via multilateration using the Mobile WiMAX network, it is very important to increase hearability. This paper proposes a geolocation method for Mobile WiMAX which employs interference cancellation and preamble signal overlapping for the enhancement of hearability. A novel interference cancellation strategy for complex-valued Mobile WiMAX signals is presented which has an iterative structure. Simulation results show that the proposed geolocation method provides the user's position with an accuracy of less than 20 m through the Mobile WiMAX cellular network if there is no multi-path or NLOS (None-Line-of-Sight).

  • A hierarchical network between Mobile-WiMAX and WLAN systems is to make it possible to utilize wireless internet services including time sensitive applications such as VoIP, VOD, visual telephony etc. During the process of vertical handoff decision from Mobile-WiMAX to WLAN hotspot, vertical handoff delay causes user dissatisfaction because it doesn't provide the seamless wireless internet service. We make use of type of service (ToS) parameters in IEEE 802.16e specification as the criterion parameter of vertical handoff decision process in hierarchical Mobile-WiMAX/WLAN networks. In this paper, we propose the process of vertical handoff decision for seamless wireless internet service which is sensitive to time delay. If type of service is time sensitive application, the decision of vertical handoff is withdrawn until the service is terminated. In focus on user satisfaction, if the proposed traffic management strategy in hierarchical Mobile-WiMAX/WLAN networks is used, user will utilize seamless wireless internet services including time sensitive applications.

  • While mobile IPTV services are supported through the mobile WiMAX networks, there must need some guaranteed bandwidth for the IPTV services especially if IPTV and non-IPTV services are simultaneously supported by the mobile WiMAX networks. The quality of an IPTV service definitely depends on the allocated bandwidth for that channel. However, due to the high quality IPTV services and to support of huge non-IPTV traffic over mobile WiMAX networks, it is not possible to guarantee the sufficient amount of the limited mobile WiMAX bandwidth for the mobile IPTV services every time. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) between the mobile IPTV service provider and mobile WiMAX network operator to reserve sufficient bandwidth for the IPTV calls can increase the satisfaction level of the mobile IPTV users. In this paper, we propose a SLA negotiation procedure for mobile IPTV users over mobile WiMAX networks. The Bandwidth Broker controls the allocated bandwidth for IPTV and non-IPTV users. The proposed dynamically reserved bandwidth for the IPTV services increases the IPTV user's satisfaction level. The simulation results state that, our proposed scheme is able to provide better user satisfaction level for the IPTV users.

  • Wireless mesh networks have been studied as the next generation technology to solve problems of conventional wireless networks. Particularly, mobile WiMAX based wireless mesh networks are noticed due to many advantages. In this paper, we propose a layer-2 handover scheme for mobile WiMAX based wireless mesh networks. A layer-2 handover scheme based on mobile WiMAX causes many handover failures over mobile WiMAX based wireless mesh networks because it does not consider the characteristics of wireless mesh networks. The proposed scheme does not bring about packet losses achieving lower handover latency than a conventional handover scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves loss-free and low handover latency during the layer-2 handover.

  • In this paper, we studied on the optimization of the output power of Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) base station considering the technical condition of base station and wireless channel condition. The optimum power of base station can be estimated based on the link budget calculation of downlink and uplink in the Mobile WiMAX communication system. We investigated the optimum output power of base station in the case of 2Tx-2Rx base station with $2{\times}2$ MIMO(multiple input multiple output) technology, 2Tx-4Rx base station with improved receiver sensitivity, and 4Tx-4Rx base station with beamforming technology.

  • In this paper, the mobile-WiMAX (m-WiMAX) using the Smart antenna technique is implemented. Experiments are performed to compare Smart antenna system with conventional single antenna system. To implement the m-WiMAX smart antenna system there are many considerations, key issues of which are symbol time acquisition, beamforming, calibration. In the paper, symbol time acquisition, beamforming, calibration are implemented in WiMAX Smart antenna system and we verified that Smart antenna system is superior to single antenna system. The experimental results show 5.5 dB performance enhancement of implemented Smart antenna system in throughput compared with a single antenna system. The experimental result is almost same as theoretical result of 6 dB.

  • This paper address the scheme for WiMAX backhaul in mobile communication network. These days most ISPs has implemented Wi-Fi backhaul using T1/E1 and DSL. if WiMAX is installed as the alternative to the mobile backhaul, it can decrease the costs drastically for the installation and operations. And it will be one of the best cost-effective solutions to cover the service areas which has not the wired communication infrastructure. WiMAX can be used for Base station, Subscriber Station, and Relay. In this paper, the performance is measured for downstream and upstream using NAT and port forwarding functions by configuring WiMAX server and WiMAX SS.
