Finite element model based on the Naghdi's shell theory in the general tensor-based form is formulated in the present study. Partial mixed variational functional for assumed strain is formulated in order to avoid the severe locking troubles known as transverse shear and membrane locking. The proposed assumed strain element in general tensor Naghdi's shell model provides very accurate solutions for thin shells in benchmark problems. In additions, linear elastic constitutive equations are given in the general curvilinear coordinate system including anisotropic layered structures. Thus laminated composited shell structures are easily analyzed in the present formulation.
This paper presents some quasi-static tests for 4 mixed columns composed of CFST column and RC column. The seismic performance and failure mode were studied under low-cyclic revised loading. The failure mode was observed under different axial compression ratios. The hysteretic curve and skeleton curve were obtained. The effects of axial compression ratio on yield mechanism, displacement ductility, energy dissipation, stiffness and strength attenuation were analyzed. The results indicate that the failure behavior of CFST-RC mixed column with archaized style is mainly caused by bending failure and accompanied by some shear failure. The axial compression ratio performs a control function on the yielding order of the upper and lower columns. The yielding mechanism has a great influence on the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of specimens. Based on the experiment, finite element analysis was made to further research the seismic performance by ABAQUS software. The variable parameters were stiffness ratio of upper and lower columns, axial compression ratio, yielding strength of steel tube, concrete strength and rebar ratio. The simulation results show that with the increase of stiffness ratio of the upper and lower columns, the bearing capacity and ductility of specimens can correspondingly increase. As the axial compression ratio increases, the ductility of the specimen decreases gradually. The other three parameters both have positive effect on the bearing capacity but have negative effect on the ductility. The results can provide reference for the design and engineering application of mixed column consisted of CFST-RC in Chinese archaized buildings.
A new three-dimensional 13-node hexahedral element with rotational degrees of freedom, which is designated as MR-H13 element, is presented. The proposed element is established by adding five nodes to one of the six faces of basic 8-node hexahedral element. The new element can be effectively used in the connection between the refined mesh and the coarser mesh. The derivation of the current element in this paper is based on the variational principles in which the rotation and skew-symmetric stress are introduced as independent variables. Numerical examples show that the performance of the new element is satisfactory.

Practical structures are subject not only to tension but also to shear and torsional loading. Even under uniaxial loading, when the load is not perpendicular to the crack plane, mixed mode crack can occur. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading. In this study, the propagation behavior of the fatigue crack of the STS304 steels under mixed mode loading condition was investigated. The mode I and II stress intensity factors of CTS specimen were calculated using elastic finite element method with experimental results. The fatigue crack propagation under mixed mode was evaluated by the effective stress intensity factor proposed by Tanaka.
In this paper, we present a numerical model for fluid-structure interaction between structure built of porous media and acoustic fluid, which provides both pore pressure inside porous media and hydrodynamic pressures and hydrodynamic forces exerted on the upstream face of the structure in an unified manner and simplifies fluid-structure interaction problems. The first original feature of the proposed model concerns the structure built of saturated porous medium whose response is obtained with coupled discrete beam lattice model, which is based on Voronoi cell representation with cohesive links as linear elastic Timoshenko beam finite elements. The motion of the pore fluid is governed by Darcy's law, and the coupling between the solid phase and the pore fluid is introduced in the model through Biot's porous media theory. The pore pressure field is discretized with CST (Constant Strain Triangle) finite elements, which coincide with Delaunay triangles. By exploiting Hammer quadrature rule for numerical integration on CST elements, and duality property between Voronoi diagram and Delaunay triangulation, the numerical implementation of the coupling results with an additional pore pressure degree of freedom placed at each node of a Timoshenko beam finite element. The second original point of the model concerns the motion of the outside fluid which is modeled with mixed displacement/pressure based formulation. The chosen finite element representations of the structure response and the outside fluid motion ensures for the structure and fluid finite elements to be connected directly at the common nodes at the fluid-structure interface, because they share both the displacement and the pressure degrees of freedom. Numerical simulations presented in this paper show an excellent agreement between the numerically obtained results and the analytical solutions.

To estimate the fatigue crack propagation behavior of compact tension shear (CTS) specimen under mixed-mode loads, crack path prediction theories and Tanaka's equation were applied. The stress intensity factor at a newly created crack tip was calculated using a finite element method via ANSYS, and the crack path and crack increment were then obtained from the crack path prediction theories, Tanaka's equation, and the Paris' equation, which were preprogrammed in Microsoft Excel. A new method called the finite element crack tip updating method (FECTUM) was developed. In this method, the finite element method and Microsoft Excel are used to calculate the stress intensity factors and the crack path, respectively, at the crack tip per each crack increment. The developed FECTUM was applied to simulate the fatigue crack propagation of a single-edge notched bending (SENB) specimen under eccentric three-point bending loads. The results showed that the number of cycles to failure of the specimen obtained experimentally and numerically were in good agreement within an error range of less than 3%.

As buildings constructed in the 1980s during a period of rapid urbanization and economic growth have aged, the demand for demolition, especially of reinforced concrete structures, has increased. In large-scale structures such as industrial buildings, a mixed approach utilizing both mechanical demolition and explosive demolition methods is being employed. As the demand for demolition rises, so do safety concerns, making structural stability during demolition a crucial issue. In this study, drones and LiDAR were used to collect actual structural data, which was then used to build a simulation model. The analysis method employed was a combination of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM), known as the Combined Finite-Discrete Element Method (FDEM), which was used to perform dynamic structural analysis during various demolition phases. The results were compared and analyzed with the commercial software ELS to assess its applicability.
Forces exerted on a shield TBM (tunnel boring machine) such as cutter head torque, thrust force, chamber pressure, and upward force are key factors determining TBM performance. However, the forces acting on the TBM when tunnelling the mixed ground have different tendencies compared to that of the uniform ground, which could impair TBM performance. In this study, the effect of mixed ground tunnelling was numerically investigated with torque, thrust force, chamber pressure, and upward force. A coupled discrete element method (DEM) and finite difference method (FDM) model for TBM driving model was used. This numerical study simulates TBM tunnelling in mixed ground composed of upper weathered granite soil and lower weathered rock. The effect on the force acting on the TBM according to the location and slope of the boundary of the mixed ground was numerically examined.
The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate quadratic finite element model based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov Galerkin (SU/PG) scheme for analyzing and predicting two dimensional flow features in complex natural rivers. For a development of model, quadratic tin, quadrilateral and mixed elements as well as linear tin, quadrilateral and mixed elements were used in the model. Also, this model was developed through reinforcement of Gauss Quadrature which was necessary to integral of governing equation. Several tests for bottom-rising channel and U-type channel were performed for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. Such results showed that solutions of second order elements are better accurate and improved than those of linear elements. Results obtained by the developed model and RMA-2 model are compared, and the results for the developed model were better accurate than those of RMA-2 model. In the future if the developed model is applied in natural rivers, it can provide better accurate results than those of existing model.

This paper presents a new formulation for transient simulations of microwave propagation in heterogeneous unbounded domains. In particular, perfectly-matched-layers(PMLs) are introduced to allow for wave absorption at artificial boundaries used to truncate the infinite extent of the physical domains. The development of the electromagnetic PML targets the application to engineering mechanics problems such as structural health monitoring and inverse medium problems. To formulate the PML for plane electromagnetic waves, a complex coordinate transformation is introduced to Maxwell's equations in the frequency-domain. Then the PML-endowed partial differential equations(PDEs) for transient electromagnetic waves are recovered by the application of the inverse Fourier transform to the frequency-domain equations. A mixed finite element method is employed to solve the time-domain PDEs for electric and magnetic fields in the PML-truncated domain. Numerical results are presented for plane microwaves propagating through concrete structures, and the accuracy of solutions is investigated by a series of error analyses.
