A series of in vitro studies were carried out to determine i) the effects of enzyme and formaldehyde treatment on the degradation characteristics of carbohydrate and protein sources and on the synchronicity of these processes, and ii) the effects of synchronizing carbohydrate and protein supply on rumen fermentation and microbial protein synthesis (MPS) in in vitro experiments. Untreated corn (C) and enzyme-treated corn (EC) were combined with soy bean meal with (ES) and without (S) enzyme treatment or formaldehyde treatment (FS). Six experimental feeds (CS, CES, CFS, ECS, ECES and ECFS) with different synchrony indices were prepared. Highly synchronous diets had the greatest dry matter (DM) digestibility when untreated corn was used. However, the degree of synchronicity did not influence DM digestibility when EC was mixed with various soybean meals. At time points of 12 h and 24 h of incubation, EC-containing diets showed lower ammonia-N concentrations than those of C-containing diets, irrespective of the degree of synchronicity, indicating that more efficient utilization of ammonia-N for MPS was achieved by ruminal microorganisms when EC was offered as a carbohydrate source. Within C-containing treatments, the purine base concentration increased as the diets were more synchronized. This effect was not observed when EC was offered. There were significant effects on VFA concentration of both C and S treatments and their interactions. Similar to purine concentrations, total VFA production and individual VFA concentration in the groups containing EC as an energy source was higher than those of other groups (CS, CES and CFS). The results of the present study suggested that the availability of energy or the protein source are the most limiting factors for rumen fermentation and MPS, rather than the degree of synchronicity.

This study was conducted to determine the optimal mixing ratio of the paper mill sludge(PMS) and pig manure(PM). Since the former contains lots of total carbon and low nitrogen, it was used as carbon source. Also, dried paper mill sludge(DPMS) was added to the mixture to control the water content. The treatments was composed of four as follows, PMS-100(PM 0%+PMS 80%+DPMS 20%), PMS-85(15+65+20), PMS-70(30+50+20), and PMS-55(45+35+20). The mixtures were composted under aerobic condition in $1.25m^3$ static piles. The piles were aerated for 15 minutes per day and turned over the mixture once a week at the early stage of composting. To estimate the maturity of composts, the changes of physico-chemical properties such as temperature, pH, C/N ratio and color were monitored every week. The 25-30 and 55-60% as optimal condition of C/N ratio and moisture content were respectively recommended for effective composting by the evaluation of the changes of phsico-chemical properties for materials taken from compost files during the composting period. When the 30 and 45% of PM were mixed with PMS, the maturity time at least demanded to the stable state were shortened and the qualify of the final product was improved in a view of nutritional components.

Recently, multiferroic materials gain much attention due to their fascinating fundamental physical properties. These materials offer wide range of potential applications such as data storage, spintronic devices and sensors, where both electronic and magnetic polarizations can be coupled. Among single-phase multiferroic materials, $BiFeO_3$ is typical because of the room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling in view of long-range magnetic- and ferroelectric-ordering temperatures. However, $BiFeO_3$ is well known to have large leakage current and small spontaneous polarization due to the existence of oxygen vacancies and other defects. Furthermore the magnetic moment of pure $BiFeO_3$ is very weak owing to its antiferromagnetic nature. Recently, various attempts have been performed to improve the multiferroic properties of $BiFeO_3$ through the co-doping at the A and the B sites, by making use of the fact that the intrinsic polarization and magnetization are associated with the lone pair of $Bi^{3+}$ ions at the A sites and the partially-filled 3d orbitals of $Fe^{3+}$ ions at the B sites, respectively. In this study, $BiFeO_3$, $Bi_{0.9}Ho_{0.1}FeO_3$, $BiFe_{0.97}Ni_{0.03}O_3$ and $Bi_{0.9}Ho_{0.1}Fe_{0.97}Ni_{0.03}O_3$ bulk compounds were prepared by solid-state reaction and rapid sintering. High-purity $Bi_2O_3$, $Ho_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $NiO_2$ powders with the stoichiometric proportions were mixed, and calcined at $500^{\circ}C$ for 24 h to produce the samples. The samples were immediately put into an oven, which was heated up to $800^{\circ}C$ and sintered in air for 1 h. The crystalline structure of samples was investigated at room temperature by using a Rigaku Miniflex powder diffractometer. The field-dependent and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements were performed with a vibrating-sample magnetometer and superconducting quantum-interference device.
One of the greatest challenges for our society is providing powerful electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells are among the most promising candidates in terms of energy and power density. As the starting material, $TiCl_4{\cdot}YCl_3$ solution and dispersing agent (HCP) were mixed and synthesized using ammonia as the precipitation agent, in order to prepare the nano size Y doped spherical $TiO_2$ precursor. Then, the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was synthesized using solid state reaction method through the stoichiometric mixture of Y doped spherical $TiO_2$ precursor and LiOH. The Ti mole increased the concentration of the spherical particle size due to the addition of HPC with a similar particle size distribution in a well in which $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ spherical particles could be obtained. The optimal synthesis conditions and the molar ratio of the Ti 0.05 mol reaction at $50^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and at $850^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours heat treatment time were optimized. $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was prepared by the above conditions as a working electrode after generating the Coin cell; then, electrochemical properties were evaluated when the voltage range of 1.5V was flat, the initial capacity was 141 mAh/g, and cycle retention rate was 86%; also, redox reactions between 1.5 and 1.7V, which arose from the insertion and deintercalation of 0.005 mole of Y doping is not a case of doping because the C-rate characteristics were significantly better.
Background: Nerve blocks, including epidural analgesia, can be risky for terminal cancer pain patients in generally poor conditions. We performed this study to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous patient-controlled analgesia(PCA) to treat severe pain of terminally ill cancer patients during the last days of life. Methods: We explained the patient's poor general condition to relatives and received a written consent to administer PCA. The starting dose of opioid for PCA in cancer pain management was based on previous 24-hour dose. Previous 24-hour opioid dose was converted to intramuscular morphine equivalent. The concentration of opioid mixed into Basal Bolus $Infusor^{(R)}$ was controlled to allow for one half of the previous 24-hour equianalgesic dose to infuse continuously. Patients controlled their pain by pushing the PCA module themselves. Patients were observed by pain service team. Some discharged patients were treated at home until death. Results: Forty eight patients received PCA for last two years. The most common reason receiving a PCA was the patient's poor general condition(52.0%). The mean starting dose of PCA was $20.6{\pm}16.2$ mg of morphine. Over eighty percents of the patients were in good or tolerable state of analgesia. Half of the patients expired within one week. The mean duration of PCA was $8.7{\pm}7.0$ days. The problems during PCA were: difficulty in maintaining intravenous routes, early loss of mentality after starting PCA, hypotension and nausea. Conclusion: We concluded that PCA, if correctly, is an effective, relatively safe and readily controllable method of pain management in terminally ill cancer patients during the last days of life. For future considerations, terminal patients may expire at the comfort of their own homes after the resolution of legal problems regarding using opioid in home care.
Germinated brown rice is a useful material that contains natural nutrients and biologically active substances. This study was conducted to develop a optimal composite recipe for functional germinated brown rice cookie with added spinach (spinacia oleracea L) powder and with high preference in all age groups. The experimental design utilized herein was based on the Central composite design methodology of response surface, which included 16 experimental points, including 2 replicates for spinach, sugar, and butter. The physical, mechanical, and sensory properties of the test were measured, and these values were applied to the mathematical models. A canonical form and perturbation plot showed the influence of each ingredient on the mixed final product. The results of spread ratio decreased significantly with increases in spinach powder, sugar, and butter(p<0.01). L value shows that lightness decreased significantly with an increase in sugar(p<0.05), but the a and b values were not significant. Sensory evaluation found significant values for color(p<0.05), flavor(p<0.05), texture(p<0.05) and overall quality(p<0.05) in the predicted model. The optimum formulation by the numerical and graphical methods was calculated as follows: spinach powder 3 g, sugar 35.5 g butter 54.4 g.
To study the conditions to enhance success of embryo transfer in the dog, 20 mixed-breed bitches were used for the experiment along with 4 male dogs for mating. The bitches were paired according to synchronism of natural estrus, or the counterpart as donor or recipient was treated with gonadotropin as FSH (follicular stimulating hormone) or PMSG (pregnant mare serum gonadotropin) for induction of estrus to be synchronized with estrus of the other bitch in natural estrus. Embryo recovery was performed in two ways for comparison, either by flushing each uterine horn after ovariohysterectomy or by flushing each horn in the state of non-ovariohysterectomy. In addition, the result of pregnancy according to the embryo stage and the repeatability of the experimental animals as donor or recipient were also investigated. FSH or PMSG was administered to the bitches which had passed over 4 months from last estrus, resulting in estrus-positive in 3 dogs of 6 FSH-treated dogs (50.0%), and in 5 dogs of 9 PMSG-treated dogs (55.6%), determined by proestrus signs and vaginal smear test. Estrus-positive bitches induced with gonadotropin were used as donor or recipient resulting in one embryo-recovered bitch as donor and one offspring-delivered bitch as recipient in 5 PMSG-treated dogs, whereas no result was obtained from 3 FSH-treated dogs. The rate of embryo recovery to be compared with number of corpus luteum was 68.2% in ovariohysterectomized dogs and 55.2% in non-ovariohysterectomized dogs, respectively. The number of dogs from which embryo was collected were 4 dogs of 6 ovariohysterectomized dogs (66.7%) and 6 dogs of 7 non-ovariohysterectomized dogs (85.7%), respectively. The result of parturition was obtained from one dog of 5 estrus-induced recipients, whereas no result was obtained from 3 natural-estrus recipients. The only dog which delivered a male puppy had been transferred 3 morulae and 2 blastocysts. Of 6 repeat-used bitches in canine embryo transfer, 3 dogs showed repeatability either as donor or recipient. These results indicated that inducing estrus of a dog with gonadotropin is feasible in canine embryo transfer to be synchronized with that of a natural-estrus dog, that embryo recovery is also possible in non-hysterectomized dogs, that the estrus-induced dog is also usable as recipient to result in parturition, and that repeat-use of a bitch as donor or(and) recipient is possible in canine embryo transfer.

Recently, multiferroic materials have attracted much attention due to their fascinating fundamental physical properties and potential technological applications in magnetic/ferroelectric data storage systems, quantum electromagnets, spintronics, and sensor devices. Among single-phase multiferroic materials, $BiFeO_3$, in particular, has received considerable attention because of its very interesting magnetoelectric properties for application to spintronics. Enhanced ferromagnetism was found by Fe-site ion substitution with magnetic ions. In this study, $BiFe_{1-x}Ni_xO_3$ (x=0 and 0.05) bulk ceramic compounds were prepared by solid-state reaction and rapid sintering. High-purity $Bi_2O_3$, $Fe_3O_4$ and NiO powders were mixed with the stoichiometric proportions, and calcined at $450^{\circ}C$ for 24 h to produce $BiFe_{1-x}Ni_xO_3$. Then, the samples were directly put into the oven, which was heated up to $800^{\circ}C$ and sintered in air for 20 min. The crystalline structure of samples was investigated at room temperature by using a Rigaku Miniflex powder diffractometer. The Raman measurements were carried out with a Raman spectrometer with 514.5-nm-excitation Ar+-laser source under air ambient condition on a focused area of $1-{\mu}m$ diameter. The field-dependent magnetization and the temperature-dependent magnetization measurements were performed with a vibrating-sample magnetometer. The x-ray diffraction study demonstrates the compressive stress due to Ni substitution at the Fe site. $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ exhibits the rhombohedral perovskite structure R3c, similar to $BiFeO_3$. The lattice constant of $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ is smaller than of $BiFeO_3$ because of the smaller ionic radius of Ni3+ than that of Fe3+. The field-dependent magnetization of $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ exhibits a clear hysteresis loop at 300 K. The magnetic properties of $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ were improved at room temperature because of the existence of structurally compressive stress.
The Taebaeksan mineralized province, which is the most important one in South Korea, is rich in zinc-lead-tungsten-iron-copper-molybdenum-silver-gold mineral resources and has a diversity of deposit styles. These deposits principally coexist in time and space with porphyry-related epigenetic deposit such as skarn, hydrothermal replacement, mesothermal vein, and Carlin-like deposits. The magmatic-hydrothermal systems in the Taebaek fold belt is genetically characterized by the Bulguksa subvolcanic rocks(ca. $110{\sim}50\;Ma$) related to northwestward subduction of the paleo-Pacific Plate. The most important zinc-lead deposits in the area are the Uljin, Yeonhwa II and Shinyemi skarn, the Janggun hydrothermal replacement, and the Yeonhwa I intermediate-mixed (skarn/hydrothermal replacement) ones. In the present study, we present a compilation of metal production and mineral assemblage of the zinc-lead deposits. The metal difference of deposit styles in the area indicates a cooling path from intermediate-sulfidation to low-sulfidation state in the polymetallic hydrothermal system, reflecting spatial proximity to a magmatic source.

The present study was conducted with three ruminally cannulated non-lactating Holstein cattle in a $3{\times}3$ Latin square design to determine the fermentation characteristics and effective degradability (ED) in the rumen, as well as the whole tract digestibility of whole crop silage based total mixed ration (TMR) in comparison with conventional separate feeding of concentrate and rice straw for late fattening Hanwoo steers. The cattle in each group were fed separate feeding of concentrate and rice straw (control), whole crop barley silage based TMR (BS-TMR) or whole crop rye silage based TMR (RS-TMR). The ruminal fermentation characteristics such as pH, ammonia-N concentration and total volatile fatty acid were not affected by the experimental diet. The molar portion of acetate ($C_2$) was lowest in rumen fluid 1 h after feeding when cattle were fed BS-TMR (p<0.033). Molar proportions of propionate ($C_3$), butyrate and $C_2/C_3$ were not influenced by the experimental diet. There were no differences in effective degradability or whole tract digestibility of feed components among any of the experimental diets. The data obtained from the metabolism trial indicate that the feeding value of TMR with BS or RS is equal to that of a conventional separate feeding of concentrate and rice straw.
