  • A simple and convenient method of analysis for obtaining the individual stress intensity factors in a three-dimensional mixed mode crack is proposed. The procedures presented here are based on the path independence of J integral and mutual or two-state conservation integral, which involves two elastic fields. The problem is reduced to the determination of mixed mode stress intensity factor solutions in terms of conservation integrals involving known auxiliary solutions. Some numerical examples are presented to investigate the effectiveness and applicability of the method for a three-dimensional penny-shaped crack problem under mixed mode. This procedure is applicable to a three-dimensional mixed mode curved crack.

  • Mixed-model production lines are often used in manufacturing systems. In production lines, different product types are simultaneously manufactured by processing small batches. This paper describes a new welding assembly technology involving the development of experimental models for a mixed-model production line in an automobile company. Due to the extensive number of models, the design of a welding assembly system is complicated. Performance evaluation is an important phase in the design of welding assembly lines in a mixed-model production environment. In this study, a new welding assembly technology for a mixed-model production method was used to weld the package tray and dash panel of a vehicle.

  • In this paper, we present the design of a source driver of QVGA scale TFT-LCD driver IC which uses a mixed driving method and performs $\gamma$-correction to improve image. The source driver with 240 RGB ${\times}$ 320 dots resolution drives a TFT-LCD panel through 720 channels and implements 262k colors using 18-bit RGB data format. The mixed driving method is a mixture the channel amp. driving method with high drivability and the gray amp. driving method with small area, which remarkably reduces channel driver areas. The driver has been designed using the $0.35{\mu}m$ Magnachip embedded DRAM technology and simulated using the HSPICE simulator. The results show that our source driver operates well with y-correction and the channel driver has $17{\mu}s$ channel driving time with only 78 driving amplifiers and control logic.

  • This paper presents a domain decomposition method for buckling analysis of rectangular Kirchhoff plates subjected to uniaxial inplane load and with mixed edge support conditions. A plate is decomposed into two rectangular subdomains along the change of the discontinuous support conditions. The automated Ritz method is employed to derive the governing eigenvalue equation for the plate system. Compatibility conditions are imposed for transverse displacement and slope along the interface of the two subdomains by modifying the Ritz trial functions. The resulting Ritz function ensures that the transverse displacement and slope are continuous along the entire interface of the two subdomains. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method are verified with convergence and comparison studies. Buckling results are presented for several selected rectangular plates with various combination of mixed edge support conditions.

  • A method of strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics in the adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials was investigated in this paper. Various shapes of adhesively bonded Al/Steel scarf joints focussing on fracture criterion of mixed mode crack were prepared for the static tests. Also, stress intensity factors of the interface cracks in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were analyzed with 2-dimensional elastic program of boundary element method(BEM), and the experiment of fracture toughness were carried out under various mixed mode conditions. From the results, the fracture criterion and method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • In this study, we have investigated the closure behavior of fatigue cracks in SAPH440 steel plates under a mixed-mode I+II loading. A crack image capturing system as a direct measuring method was used to measure the closure levels at a crack tip. The crack closure levels in the fluctuation and stable sections were increased with the increase of the mode mixture ratio. The mode mixture ratio independent fatigue crack propagation rates equation was calculated by considering mixed-mode crack closure levels. The equation was examined according to the application method of crack opening ratio. The fracture surface analysis by C-scan method was also performed in order to investigate the closure mechanism and propagation mode of crack under the mixed-mode I+II loading. The crack closure under the mixed mode I+II is confirmed as a surface roughness closure by the quantitative analysis of fracture surface using the proposed surface roughness parameter.

  • This study proposed the optimal mixing time for pre-mixed cement and post mixed cement using the statistical analysis method of box plots. Pre-mixed cement can prevent material seegregation, strength loss, and quality variation if mixed for at least 60 seconds, and the data median is shown to be within the box range. Post-mixed cement should be mixed for at least 180 seconds to prevent material segregation, strength loss, and quality variation, and compressive strength tends to increase with longer vibrating times. Therefore, it is suggested that using pre-mixed cement can shorten the vibrating time and increase the productivity of the concrete.

  • Formation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on various surfaces are the essential basis for many other applications, including molecular switches, biosensors, microfluidics, and fundamental studies in surfaces and interfaces. To improve the performance at these applications, it is a key to control the quantity of each molecule in various mixed SAMs on the surface. In this study, using mixed SAM of carbamate-based hydroquinone (HQ)-PhBr and11-mercaptoundecanol, the quantitative mass spectrometric method of mixed SAM was developed based on comparison study with XPS and FT-IR methods. In addition, our method was applied to another mixed SAM of biotinylated PEG alkane thiol and 11-mercaptoundecanol for verification purpose. Time-of-flight secondary mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis was performed to identify and quantify each molecule of mixed SAM along with principal component analysis (PCA). Since there is no matrix effect in the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) techniques, we compared ToF-SIMS results with XPS and FT-IR results. Because PCA results from ToF-SIMS analysis are well matched with XPS and FT-IR results from both mixed SAMs, we are expecting that our method will be useful to identify and quantify each molecule in various mixed SAMs.

  • This research carried out to investigate the effects of inorganic materials in paper sludge on the thermal degradation and of paper sludge addition on physical and mechanical properties of paper sludge-wood particle mixed boards in comparison with unmodified particleboards. Also these unmodified particleboards and paper sludge-wood particle mixed boards were soaked in aqueous solutions of fire-retardant chemicals(diammonium phosphate and zinc chloride), and their fire retardancy were tested by oxygen index method and ISO ignition test to determine the feasibility of paper sludge, industrial waste, as a recyclable resource in fabrication of fire-resisting panels for building material. Since the redrying of fire-retardant treated particleboards and paper sludge-wood particle mixed boards were made by press drying method, this process was a simple and effective method. On the other hand, flexural bending strength and internal bonding strength were also analysed to evaluate mechanical properties through standard method.

  • Advection-dominated transport problems possess difficulties in the design of numerical methods for solving them. Because of the hyperbolic nature of advective transport, many characteristic numerical methods have been developed such as the classical characteristic method, the Eulerian-Lagrangian method, the transport diffusion method, the modified method of characteristics, the operator splitting method, the Eulerian-Lagrangian localized adjoint method, the characteristic mixed method, and the Eulerian-Lagrangian mixed discontinuous method. In this paper relationships among these characteristic methods are examined. In particular, we show that these sometimes diverse methods can be given a unified formulation. This paper focuses on characteristic finite element methods. Similar examination can be presented for characteristic finite difference methods.
