  • In this paper an efficient approach is introduced for design and analysis of double-layer grids including both geometrical and material nonlinearities, while the results are compared with those considering material nonlinearity. Optimum design procedure based on Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization method (ECBO) is applied to optimal design of two commonly used configurations of double-layer grids. Two ranges of spans as small and big sizes with certain bays of equal length in two directions are considered for each type of square grids. ECBO algorithm obtains minimum weight grid through appropriate selection of tube sections available in AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD). Strength constraints of AISC-LRFD specifications and displacement constraints are imposed on these grids.

  • The paper presents the optimal design of a oil-free two-stage compressor, which is driven by 75 kW motor at an operating speed of 39,000 rpm, and the pressure ratio of which is up to 4. First, an attempt is made to obtain the optimal design of a bump bearing which supports a compressor rotor. Second, bump bearings and shaft are considered simultaneously, and the weighted sum of rotor weight and frictional torque is minimized. Finally, the optimal geometry of compressor wheel is considered. The mean efficiency and the - minimum efficiency are maximized respectively. The results presented in this paper provide important design information necessary to reduce the energy loss.

  • The paper describes the use of genetic algorithms (GA's) to the minimum weight design of stiffened composite panels for buckling constraints. The proposed design problem is characterized by mixture of continuous and discrete design variables corresponding to panel elements and stacking sequence of laminates, respectively. Design space is multimodal and non-convex, thereby introducing the need for global search strategies. Advanced strategies in GA's such as directed crossover, multistage search and separated crossover are adopted to improve search ability and to save computational resource requirements. The paper explores the effectiveness of genetic algorithms and their advanced strategies in designing stiffened composite panels under various uniaxial compressive load conditions and the linrlit on stacking sequence of laminates.

  • This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) for the multispan partially prestressed concrete beams. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, prestressing steel, non-prestressing steel and formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection, flexural and shear strengths, in addition to ductility requirements, and upper and lower bounds on design variables as stipulated by the design code. Based on Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, the optimality criteria are explicitly derived in terms of the design variables-effective depth, eccentricity of prestressing steel and non-prestressing steel ratio. The prestressing profile is prescribed by parabolic functions. The self-weight of the structure is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system, as is the secondary effect resulting from the prestressing force. Two numerical examples of multispan PPC beams with rectangular cross-section are solved to show the applicability and efficiency fo the DCOC-based technique.

  • In this article, a genetic algorithm based optimum design method is presented for non-linear steel frames with semi-rigid connections. The design algorithm obtains the minimum weight frame by selecting suitable sections from a standard set of steel sections such as European wide flange beams (i.e., HE sections). A genetic algorithm is employed as optimization method which utilizes reproduction, crossover and mutation operators. Displacement and stress constraints of Turkish Building Code for Steel Structures (TS 648, 1980) are imposed on the frame. The algorithm requires a large number of non-linear analyses of frames. The analyses cover both the non-linear behaviour of beam-to-column connection and $P-{\Delta}$ effects of beam-column members. The Frye and Morris polynomial model is used for modelling of semi-rigid connections. Two design examples with various type of connections are presented to demonstrate the application of the algorithm. The semi-rigid connection modelling results in more economical solutions than rigid connection modelling, but it increases frame drift.

  • This paper summarizes available literature on the optimization of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The objective of optimization (e.g. minimum cost or weight), the design variables and the constraints considered by different studies vary widely and therefore, different optimization methods have been employed to provide the optimal design of RC beams, whether as isolated structural components or as part of a structural frame. The review of literature suggests that nonlinear deterministic approaches can be efficiently employed to provide optimal design of RC beams, given the small number of variables. This paper also presents spreadsheet implementation of cost optimization of RC beams in the familiar MS Excel environment to illustrate the efficiency of the exhaustive enumeration method for such small discrete search spaces and to promote its use by engineers and researchers. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed on the contribution of various design parameters to the variability of the overall cost of RC beams.

  • We present the optimum design for the cross-sectional(sizing) and shape optimization of truss structures with natural frequency constraints. The optimum design method used in this paper employs continuous design variables and the Harmony Search Algorithm(HSA). HSA is a meta-heuristic search method for global optimization problems. In this paper, HSA uses the method of random number selection in an update process, along with penalty parameters, to construct the initial harmony memory in order to improve the fitness in the initial and update processes. In examples, 10-bar and 72-bar trusses are optimized for sizing, and 37-bar bridge type truss and 52-bar(like dome) for sizing and shape. Four typical truss optimization examples are employed to demonstrate the availability of HSA for finding the minimum weight optimum truss with multiple natural frequency constraints.

  • To grasp the size system of children's clothing online shopping malls, basic size charts for clothing products from 14 shopping malls were collected, compared, and analyzed. Looking at the age range of the basic size chart for each company, the minimum age is 1 year old, the maximum age is 14-15 years old, and all companies included ages up to 7 years. In addition, as for the number of size designations, children's clothing companies used seven to eight designations, and there were six types of size designation methods. Next, looking at the height range for each size, even with the same size designation method, the height range differed depending on the company. Also, the KS size standard does not consider body weight, but many companies use weight as a reference body size. Compared with the child body size data of the 6th Korean Body Size Data, the height and weight range for each size provided by the company showed differences between companies. The results of this study can be used in the future as basic data when revising and supplementing the clothing sizes in children's clothing companies.

  • Hydraulic vane pumps are widely used in various hydraulic systems because of its compactness and light weight. It is well known that the vanes and cam ring are separated by very thin liquid films which result in the EHL state. Contrary to the case of cylindrical roller bearings, the inlet and side boundary pressures are much higher than the atmospheric pressure. In this paper, a numerical solution of the EHL of finite line contacts between the cam ring and vane tip with profiled ends is presented. Using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method, converged solutions are obtained for moderate load and material parameters. The EHL pressure distribution and film shape are considerably affected by pump delivery pressure and the side boundary condition applied. Both the maximum pressure and the minimum film thickness always occurred near the edge regions. The present results can be used in the design of optimum vane profile in hydraulic vane pump.
