This study investigated the mineralogical characteristics and basic flotation properties of domestic molybdenum ores. The source mineral of molybdenum was identified as molybdenite, and the main gangue minerals in the raw ore were silicate minerals. Copper, lead, and zinc were also found in trace amounts. Based on the results of basic flotation properties, molybdenite's zeta potential showed negative charges in all pH ranges. The contact angle of molybdenite increased with pH, reaching a maximum of 74° at pH 9. In optimal conditions, the grade and recovery of the concentrate by unit flotation were MoS2 82.4% and 92.04%, respectively. Further investigation of the impurities in the concentrate revealed a sulfide mineral with surface characteristics similar to molybdenite and silicate minerals combined with molybdenite, which may degrade the quality of the concentrate. To improve the concentrate quality, we intend to control silicate minerals through regrinding and liberation and use column flotation to improve fine particle separation efficiency.
Tachylite, black basaltic glass formed by the rapid cooling of molten basalt, locally occurs at the Basaltic Agglomerate Formation (BAF), the lowest formation of Ulleung Island. The purposes of this study are to characterize the occurrence and mineralogy of tachylite and to elucidate its formation condition, with emphasis on its fracture pattern, which can serve as implications for the early volcanic activity of Ulleung Island. To this end, we investigated the occurrence pattern of tachylite in the field and carried out mineralogical analyses using optical microscope, XRD, EPMA, and SEM. Tachylite occurs at the chilled margin of basic dikes which are distributed in Naesujeon, Dodong and Jeodong seasides, Turtle Rock, and Yaerimwon, whose widths vary from several cm to 10 cm. It is evident that the outer surface of tachylite is dense and smooth, whereas the inner surface, if fractured, is characterized by conchoidal fracture. The matrix of tachylite consists of amorphous, glass and some fine-grained phenocrysts present in tachylite include biotite, anorthoclase, sanidine, plagioclase, hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxides. The fracture patterns characteristic of tachylite are subrounded, oval, or less commonly polygonal, bounded by joints to form globule or lump. Taking into account texture and mineralogy, tachylite is interpreted to have undergone little subsequent alteration at low temperature via hydration or hydrolysis that could form clay minerals after it was formed. Because tachylite with peculiar fractures occurs as dikes in a close association with BAF, its presence is considered as reliable evidence that when tachylite formed, the most part of BAF was still under subaqueous conditions, or at least saturated with seawater.
This study is aimed to emphasize the significance of ore selection in lime manufacturing through the evaluation of applied-mineralogical impact factors of crude ores controlling calcination characteristics for some domestic limestones used currently for lime manufacturing. To do this work, systematic characterization and determination were carried out for the limestone ores and their calcination products in a fixed calcining condition (target temperature: $1000^{\circ}C$, retention time: 30 minutes, 2, 4, 10, 16 hours), and the results were correlated and discussed. Selected high-Ca limestones in this study are as much as > 98 wt%, but they are somewhat diverse in crystallinity, texture, and impurity composition. Synthesized quicklimes are varied depending on such a difference in ore characters. The Pungchon limestone has relatively very low calcination rate, and the limestones from the Gabsan formation and the Jeongseon formation exhibit good quality in calcination rate and decrepitation. Among these samples, the limestone ore from the Jeongseon formation is evaluated to be the best for crude ore in manufacturing of highly-reactive quicklime. In addition, it is characteristic that the Gabsan limestone comparative rich in Fe-bearing mineral such as pyrite and goethite is more conspicuous in sintering effect.

This study aimed to investigate the differences in the commercial powder products of the Yeongdong illite based on sales specifications, specifically examining the mineralogical composition, particle size, and chemical composition according to mesh size. The goal was to understand the characteristics of illite powder products and utilize them as a mineralogical database for exploring various applications. Commercial illite powder samples obtained from two mines were subjected to various experiments, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, laser diffraction particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy analysis, X-ray fluorescence analysis. The XRD analysis revealed that the illite powder products from the two mines mainly consisted of illite/muscovite, quartz, and feldspar, indicating similar constituent minerals matching with those of ores for each mine. Laser diffraction particle size analysis indicated the difference in particle size distribution depending on the product specifications, with particle size uniformity tending to increase with increasing mesh sizes. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed variations in particle shape and size based on specifications. The size of illite particles did not vary significantly with product specifications, with noticeable changes observed mainly in the particle sizes of quartz and feldspar. Furthermore, although there were some differences in chemical composition among the samples from different mines, no significant variations were observed according to specifications. Based on these results, when considering the application of commercial illite powder, it is essential to carefully select it with the consideration of its specifications to account for characteristic variations. The findings of this study present support the great potential of various application fields of commercial illite powder, contributing to industrial utilization and the development of new technologies.
Chuncheon nephrite, which was formed by the polymetasomatic alteration of dolomitic marble, can be classified into pale green, green, dark green, and grey types on the basis of their occurrence, mineralogical and textural characteristics. The nephrites consist obiefly of fibrous or hairlike(length/width ratio>10) cryptocrystalline(crystal width < $2{\mu}m$) tremolite, and include less amounts of micro-crystalline diopside, calcite, clinochlore, and sphene as impurities. The oriented and rather curved crystal aggregate, of nephritic tremolite are densely interwoven, resulting in a massive-fibrous texture which may explain the characteristic toughness of nephritic jade. The characteristic greenish color of the nephrite may be preferably related to Fe rather than Cr and Ni. However, the variation of color and tint in the Chuncheon nephrite also depends on the mineralogical and textural differences such as crystallinity, texture, and impurities. The chemical composition of the nephritic tremolite is not stoichiometric and rather dispersed especially in the abundances of Al, Mg, and Ca. Al content and Mg/Ca ratio for the nephritic tremolite are slightly increased with deepening in greenish color of the nephrite. Fe content in the nephritic tremolite is generally very low, but comparatively richer in the dark green nephrite. In nephritic tremolite, wide-chain pyriboles are irregularly intervened between normal double chains, forming a chain-width disorder. Most nephritic tremolites in the Chuncheon nephrite show various type of chain-width defects such as triple chain(jimthompsonite), quintuple chain (chesterite), or sometimes quadruple chain in HRTEM observations. The degree of chain-width disorder in the nephritic tremolite tends to increase with deepening in greenish color. Triple chain is the most common type, and quadruple chain is rarely observed only in the grey nephrite. The presence of pyribole structure in the nephritic tremolite is closely related to the increase of Al content and Mg/Ca ratio, a rather dispersive chemical composition, a decrease of relative intensity in (001) XRD reflection, and an increase in b axis dimension of unit cell. In addition, the degree and variation of chain-width disorder with nephrite types may support that an increase of metastability was formed by a rapid diffusion of Mg-rich fluid during the nephrite formation.
In the high-Ca limestone zone of the Pungchon Formation of the Lower Chosun Supergroup, cryptocrystalline alterations with reddish brown color occur as fissure-fillings or coatings, which was originated from the upper formation, i. e., the Hwajeol Formation. The precipitates result in degradation and contamination of the high-Ca limestone ore in grade and quality, showing characteristic occurrence and mineral composition typical of suggesting a supergene origin. Chalcedonic quartz, kaolinite, illite, goethite and hematite are constituting a characteristic authigenic mineral assemblage and, in places, smectite is less commonly included in the weathering product. In addition to these authigenic phases, some detrital minerals such as mica and orthoclase constituting relatively coarser grains are also rarely present in the supergene alterations. A rather complex clay facies consisting of kaolinite, illite and smectite in the alterations seems to correspond to the typical clay composition of the reported residual pedogenic soils by limestone weathering. The cryptocrystalline weathering product is partly altered to stilbite, a characteristic hydrothermal zeolite, in places, by the hydrothermal contact of late stage. The time of formation and infiltration of the supergene alterations seems to correspond to the stage just after the epithermal alteration of the Pungchon Limestone, i. e., an early Jurassic age. The supergene alteration, which may imply the stage of uplifting, weathering and erosion of the Chosun Supergroup, appears to have undergone at an oxygen-rich environment in descending water of meteoric origin by means of a chemical leaching and diffusion.
A characteristic mineralogical zonal distribuion is observed in a large scale(whole ore- body) small scales(handy specimens). They show similar chemical variations: most of elements except CaO were supplied by hydrothermal fluids to form skarns. Garnets occuring in the pyroxene-garnet skarn have a wide range of chemical composition ranging from andradite to grossularite, while individual grains of the garnets also show a similar zonation of chemical composition varied between grossularite and andradite. Highly contained Mo-bearing scheelites are generally concentrated in the central part of the Sang- dong skarn orebody. Similarly, some large grains of scheelite show a nice zonation due to different contents of Mo, highly enriched in the core of the scheelite crystal. This geochemical similarity in the large scale and small scales suggests the Sangdong skarn formation was achieved under a certain chemical environment, and detailed studies on a small scale texture could be a clue to understand a whole ore deposit.
This report is written for presenting a principal theme of study about. the origin of Sangdong ore deposit in details, being an aid to find new ore bodies, on the basis of mineralogical charactor and geological feature. Main vein in Sandgong mine has characteristic zonal distribution and localization of minerals. 3 kinds of minerals, that are quartz, hornblende, diopside, form systematically their each rich zones. Other minerals like plagioclase, native bismuth, sphene, molybdenite and wolframite are developed locally. According to the zonal distribution and localization of the minerals, the authors presume that mineralizing agents which changed interbedded limestones into ore bodies act and come up from non-exposed igneous body in the direction perpendicular to the platy main vein. That non-exposed igneous body, presumed, might be extended from the exposed igneous bodies in the southern part of Sangdong mine.
$M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ and Infrared absorption spectra of the iron-bearing tourmaline minerals show that the ferrous and ferric ions occupy the Y and Z octahedral sites. The Fe ions are almost ferrous, predominantly partitioning into Y site and partly take in Z site. The $Fe^{2+}$ content of the Z sites in brownish black tourmaline minerals are higher than that in blue/green tourmaline minerals. Therefore, 720 nm peak of brownish black samples is broader than that of blue/green samples in optical spectra. All of the blue/green tourmaline minerals used in experiment have only $Fe^{2+}$ ion. The IR spectra of tourmaline depend on the cation environments around OH groups, as also evidenced by their chemical analyses. There appear no difference in IR spectrum between O(1)H and O(3)H binding characters in the heat-treated samples. But the characteristic $3565cm^{-1}$ peak appears in the ferrous hydroxyl bearing silicates, where dehydroxylation temperature for OH coordinated to $Fe^{2+}$ is $700{\sim}800^{\circ}C$.
A new polymorph of tridymite, an incommensurately modulated phase (IC phase), has been identified. While the symmetry of the IC lattice is same as that of the Ll phase, the geometry of the IC lattice structure is same as the basis of the L3 structure with a different modulation (modulation vector q=0.22 $c*_{H}$;$\lambda$ 37 ). On the other hand, the characteristic curved diffuse diffration observed from the Ll atoms could occur even at room phase suggests that the dynamic disordering of atoms, especially oxygen atoms could occur even at room temperature. The phase transition of Ll to L3 by grinding is gradual but very conspicuous: LllongrightarrowL1+IClongrightarrowIC+L3longrightarrowL3. However, it is revealed that real transition processes of individual grains are directly related to the local stress fields and preexisting microstructures.
