  • Recycling process of iron should be developed for efficient recovery of neodymium (Nd), rare metal, from acid-leaching solution of Nd magnet. In this study, $FeCl_3$ solution as iron source was used for preparation of iron nano particles with the condition of various factors, such as, reductant, and surfactant. $Na_4P_2O_7$ and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactants, $NaBH_4$ as reductant, and palladium chloride ($PdCl_2$) as a nucleation seed were used. Iron powder was analyzed by using XRD, SEM for measuring shape and size. Iron nano particles were prepared at the ratio of 1:5 (Fe (III) : $NaBH_4$). Size and shape of iron particles were round-form and 50 ~ 100 nm size. Zeta-potential of iron at the 100 mg/L of $Na_4P_2O_7$ was negative value, which was good for dispersion of metal particle. When $Na_4P_2O_7$ (100 mg/L), PVP($FeCl_3:PVP$ = 1 : 4, w/w) and Pd($FeCl_3:PdCl_2$ = 1 : 0.001, w/w) were used, iron nano particles which were round-shape, well-dispersed and near 100 nm-sized range. In this condition, $FeCl_3$ solution changed with spent Nd leachate solution, and then it is possible to be made round-formed iron nano particles at pH 9 and at the reaction bath over 20 L which is not include any surfactant.

  • It is known that coal-derived fly ashes have the unique chemical composition and mineralogical characteristics. Since iron oxides in coal fly ash are enriched with heavy metals, the subsurface media including soils, underground water, and sea water are highly likely contaminated with heavy metals when the heavy metals are leached from fly ashes by water-fly ash interactions. The purpose of this study was to investigate how indigenous bacteria affect heavy metal leaching and mineralogy in fly ash slurry during the fly ash-seawater interactions in the ash pond located in Dangjin seashore, Korea. The average pH of ash pond seawater was 8.97 in nature. Geochemical data showed that microbial activity sharply increased after the 7th day of the 60-day course batch experiments. Compared with other samples including autoclaved and natural samples, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ was likely to decrease considerably in the fly ash slurry samples when glucose was added to stimulate the microbial activity. Geochemical data including Eh/pH, alkalinity, and major and trace elements showed that the bacteria not only immobilize metals from the ash pond by facilitating the chemical reaction with Mn, Fe, and Zn but may also be able to play an important role in sequestration of carbon dioxide by carbonate mineral precipitation.

  • Many farmers have been seeking alternatives to chemical fertilizer for successful organic fruit production. This experiment was carried out to investigate the replaceability of chemical fertilizer by cover crop and slurry composting biofiltration (SCB) liquid manure (LM) application in pear orchard. Three treatments were contained in this experiment; cover crop only and cover crop + LM treatment, and control (chemical fertilizer application). Dry weight and mineral contents of gramineous cover crops were significantly increased in LM-combined treatments than that of leguminous species. Bulk density of soil was decreased in rye + LM and hairy vetch + LM treatments, compared with each cover crop treatment. Soil pH was lowest in fertilizer treatment and soil nitrate content became similar between treatments after rainy season. Available soil phosphate was lower in cover crop and cover crop + LM treatmemts than control, but exchangeable Mg was higher. The mineral content and net assimilation rate of leaves showed no difference between the treatments. As a result, it is suggested that the application of SCB liquid manure in pear orchard managed by cover crops is desirable to maintain the productivity by improving soil physical properties and potential nutrient recovery.

  • The technology developed for the decrease of applying loads and self-weight of a structure is to improve conventional Foam Cement Banking Method (FCB) by applying mixed slurry of bottom ash, cement and foams. Since the foam-mixed concrete, which is a major material of the Bottom ash-mixed Light weight concrete Banking method (BLB) developed, contains mineral admixture such as cement, the behavior shows time-dependent deformation and deterioration of durability due to environmental exposure. Thus, this study is subject to figure out the characteristics of long-termed behavior and durability of the developed method by carrying out experiments for schemed parameters, which are considered to be factors affecting mainly on concrete's characteristics from mechanical analysis. As results of tests, it was found that the developed concrete offers higher resistance than conventional foamed concrete in terms of long-termed behaviors associated with drying shrinkage and creep, and durability problems of freeze-thaw and carbonation processes, especially with addition of bottom ash.

  • The mechanical process followed by hydrometallurgical treatment has been developed in order to recover cobalt and lithium from spent lithium ion battery. In the previous study, a citrate precursor combustion process to prepare cathodic active materials from the leaching solution was elucidated. Resynthesis of electrode materials should be more valuable in spent battery recycling. Conventional slurry mixing of $LiCoO_2$ and carbon cannot make uniform distribution, and therefore the cathode cannot reach the theoretical charge-discharge capacity and is easily degraded during the charge-discharge cycling. In this study, ultra-fine $LiCoO_2$ powders has been prepared by modification of the combustion process and fabricated the enhanced cathode by modification of mixing method of $LiCoO_2$ and carbon added.

  • This study carried out to investigate the effects of the types of animal manure and the dogies of the slope on productivity of com and the runoff of nitrogen and phosphorus in corn cultivation soil. Main plots were consisted of the degrees of slope, such as $0\%\;9\%$ and $18\%$ and the subplots on consisted of the types of animal manure, such as chemical fertilizer (CF), compost of swine manure fermented with sawdust (CSMFS), and cattle slurry (CS). Erosion was constructed with 0.33 m width, 3 m length and 0.4 m height. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Dry matter(DM) yield of corn decreased by an enhancement of the degrees of slope DM yield reveals that there is an increase in order CS > CF > CSMFS. 2. Nitrogen contents of the whole corn reveals that there is an increase in order CF>CS>CSMFS. However, nitrogen content was not affected by the degrees of slope. 3. Nitrogen yields (NY) of com decreased by an enhancement of the degrees of slope. NY of CS increased more than 2.0 fold as compared CSMFS. 4. Mineral nitrogen content in the runoff during the experiment was hardly influenced by both the degrees of slope and the types of animal manure. 5. $NO_3$ - N in the runoff during the experiment increased by an enhancement of the degrees of slope. 6. In the degrees of slope used in this experiment, $NH_4$-N and $PO_4$-P content in runoff was lower than 8 ug / ul and 1 ug/ul, respectively.

  • Calcium lactate was prepared by reacting lactic acid with precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) which was prepared by carbonation process (calcite) and solution process (aragonite). Effects of PCC morphology (calcite and aragonite) on calcium lactate by the solution process were investigated experimentally. Despite the slow forming rate at the initial stage, the final yield of calcium lactate appeared higher when calcite was used. Therefore, the maximum yield of calcium lactate using aragonite was 85.0% and that using calcite was 88.7%, respectively. For both cases, the optimum temperature for the preparation appeared at around $60^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the increase in lactic acid concentration over 2.0 mol% increased slurry viscosity and deteriorated mass transfer, which resulted in low yield of calcium lactate for both cases. SEM analyses showed that the prepared calcium lactate appeared as plate-like crystal form, irrespective of PCC morphologies, reaction temperatures, and concentrations of lactic acid.

  • This study investigated the dechlorination mechanisms of TCE by Fe(II) associated with cement. Batch slurry experiments were peformed to investigate the behaviors of selected ions; Fe(II), Fe(III), $Ca^{2+}$, $SO_4^{2-}$ in cement/Fe(II) system. The kinetic experiments of TCE in cement/Fe(II) systems showed that injected Fe(II) was mostly sorbed on cement within 0.5 day and 90% of injected 200 mM sulfate was sorbed on cement within 0.5 day when $[TCE]_0$ = 0.25 mM and $[Fe(II)]_0$ = 200 mM. The kinetic experiments of TCE in hematite/CaO/Fe((II) systems were conducted for simulation of cement/Fe(II) system. Calcium oxide that is one of the major components in cement hydration reactions or has a reactivity in limited conditions. Hematite assumed the ferric iron oxide component of cement. The reactivities observed in hematite/CaO/Fe(II) system were comparable to those reported for cement/Fe(II) systems containing similar molar amounts of Fe(II). The behavior of Fe(II) and $SO_4^{2-}$ sorbed on solid phase at an early stage of reaction in hematite/CaO/Fe(II) system was similar to that of cement/Fe(II) system. Ferric ion was released from hematite at an early period of reaction at low pH. The experimental evidence of kinetic test using hematite/CaO/Fe(II) system implies that the reactive reductant is a mixed-valent Fe(II)-Fe(III) mineral, which may be similar to green rust. Fe(II) sorbed on cement can be converted to new mineral phase having a reactivity such as Fe(II)-Fe(III) (hydr)oxides in cement/Fe(II) systems.

  • The Stone Powder Sludge(below SPS) is the by-product from the process that translates stone power of 8mm under as crushed fine aggregate. It is the sludge as like cake that has average particle size of $7{\mu}m$, absorbing water content of 20 to 60%, and $SiO_2$ content of 60% over. Because of high water content of SPS, it is not only difficult to handle, transport, and recycle, but also makes worse the economical efficiency due to high energy consuming to drying. This study is aim to recycle SPS as it is without drying. Target product is the lightweight foamed concrete that is made from the slurry mixed with pulverized mineral compounds and foams through hydro-thermal reaction of CaO and $SiO_2$. Although in the commercial lightweight foamed concrete CaO source is the cement and $SiO_2$ source is high purity silica powder with $SiO_2$ of 90%, we tried to use the SPS as $SiO_2$ source. From the experiments with factors such as foam addition rate and replacement proportion of SPS, we find that the lightweight foamed concrete with SPS shows the same trends as the density and strength of lightweight foamed concrete increases according to decrease of foam addition rate. But in the same condition, the lightweight foamed concrete with SPS is superior strength and density to that with high purity silica. This trends is distinguished according to increase of replacement proportion of SPS, also the analysis of XRF shows that the hydro thermal reaction translates SPS to tobermorite. Although SPS has low $SiO_2$ contents, the lightweight foamed concrete with SPS has superior strength and density, because it reacts well with CaO due to extremely fine particles. We conclude that it is possible to replace the high purity silica as SPS in the lightweight foamed concrete experimentally.
