  • Although the roles of calcium in plant are widely known, little is known about on an antagonistic effect of macro elements, oxalate biosynthesis and main shape of crystal in cucumber plant organs. Seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus cv. Ijoeunbackdadagi) were germinated in perlite tray supplied with distilled-deionized water. Seedlings were transplanted into aerated containers with a half strength of Ross nutrient solution. Ca levels treated in media were as follows; No-Ca, $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 0.25, 1.25 and 2.5 mmol $L^{-1}$, and $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 2.5 mmol $L^{-1}$ + $CaCl_210$, 25 and 50 mmol $L^{-1}$. Ca-deficient and -excessive conditions severely reduced cucumber growth, as compared to the control, and adversely affected an accumulation of macro elements (N, P, K, and Mg). Calcium favorably induced oxalate (acid-soluble) synthesis in leaves and roots of cucumber plant, but not in stem. Acid-soluble oxalate contents in leaves proportionally increased with Ca supply levels (0.91, P<0.001), however, this pattern was not observed in stem and roots. Ca-oxalate crystal formation and compositional analysis were examined using SEM-EDS technique in cucumber leaves. The main type of crystal revealed a prismatic crystal and main components were Ca, Na and Cl.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the type and application level of swine manure on herbage productivity, efficiency of nitrogen utilization and environmental pollution by the leaching of nitrogen compounds in mixed grassland. The field experiment was carried out on established grassland sward growing on silt clay loam soil. Main plots were the types of swine manure, such as swine manure fermented with sawdust(SMFWS), swine manure fermented without sawdust(SMF) and swine slurry(SS), and mineral fertilizer(Urea). Subplots were the application levels of swine manure, such as 100, 200 and 400 kgN/ha, The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Herbage productivity, nutritive value and nitrogen yields were the highest with mineral fertilizer and followed by swine slurry(SS), and the lowest with swine manure fermented with sawdust(SMFS). As compared with dry matter(DM) yield by application of mineral fertilizer(100%), the DM percents of SMFWS, SMFS and SS were 90.6, 80,9 and 76.8%, respectively. 2. Organic matter(OM) contents of the soil were increased by the applications of swine manure. OM contents were the high set with SMFS and the lowest with mineral fertilizer. 3. The amounts of nitrate leaching by types and application levels of swine manure were the highest in the end of Aug. and early of Sep. during the seasons and ranged from 10 to 25ppm.

  • The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of applying time of cattle slurry and fertilizing added mineral nitrogen on dry matter yield of orchardgrass and also to estimate proper levels of fertilizing nitrogen when idled arable land rapidly increased these days, which was used for the production of Orchardgrass. The results were as follows. 1. The annual yields of dry matter were produced 5.62~6.67 ton per ha when cattle slurry applied at rates of $30m^3$(average mineral fertilizer equivalent to 120kg) per ha in different dressing times. Those were higher 0.60~1.65 ton or 0.16 ton per ha than the yields from non-fertilizing or phosphrous and potassium fertilizing. 2. Relative yields of annual dry matter from mineral nitrogen fertilization of 120kg per ha were 142~146% in comparsion with control plots(cattle slurry plot or phosphrous and potassium plot). On the other hand, those of cattle slurry application were 112~133% in comparion with non-fertilizing plot. 3. The efficiencies of nitrogen on dry matter yield(kg DM/kg N) were 5.0~13.8 DM kg/N kg when cattle slurry applied to Orchardgrass at rates of $30m^3$(average mineral fertilizer equivalent to 120kg) per ha, and were 21.3~23.1kg DM/kg N at the same level fertilization of mineral nitrogen. 4. On the condition of this study, mineral nitrogen were fertilized after applying cattle slurry at rates of $30m^3$(average mineral fertilizer equivalent to 120kg) per ha in order to minimize chemical fertilizer and increase the potential production of Orchardgrass. At this situation, marginal dry matter yields of 8.48~8.63 ton per ha were obtained as the level of economic even point goint when mineral nitrogen fertilization is between 119.4 and 133.3kg per ha. It was possible to obtain the maximal dry matter yield(8.98 tons/ha) with fertilization of 202.8kg N/ha.

  • Organic farming is rapidly expanding worldwide. Crop growth in organic systems greatly depends on the functions performed by soil microbes, and nutrient supply weed suppression by green manure crops input. Four red-pepper production systems were compared: 1) bare ground (conventional system); 2) hairy vetch monoculture; 3) rye monoculture; and 4) hairy vetch-rye mixture. Soil inorganic N reached the peak at 30 DAI and hairy vetch monoculture was the highest ($192mg\;kg^{-1}$) and soil total carbon was fluctuated sporadically during the experiment. Carbohydrate and phenolic compounds in soil kept significantly higher in green manure crops systems from 10 DBI to 30 DAI, however the level was the maximum at 10 DBI (carbohydrate) and 30 DAI (phenolic comounds). Incorporation of green manure crops residue enhanced soil microbial biomass C and N throughout the growing season except that MBN in rye was reduced after incorporation. Green manure crops systems suppressed weed occurrence and, in particular, it was prominent in rye monoculture. Mineral elements composition and production in red-pepper fruits were markedly decreased in green manure crops systems although hairy vetch monoculture has come close to bare ground (NPK-applied). Therefore, it was suggested that higher biomass production should be performed not only to improve soil quality and suppress weeds but to yield suitable red-pepper fruits in green manure crops-based organic farming.

  • An accurate analysis of nutrient balance in different cropping systems is necessary for improving soil fertilities, causing higher crop yields and quality. This study was carried out to investigate the nutrient balance, changes in soil properties, and their effects on crop yield in long-term field cultivation under mono- and rotation-cropping systems (MCS and RCS, respectively). The analytical results of the soil properties showed that the application of mineral fertilizers alone in the MCS leads the reduction of soil CEC, exchangeable Ca, and microbial biomass C and N. Compared with the MCS of soybean, the RCS of soybean and barley significantly improved the soil properties, which increased crop yield. It might be due to the barley residue added to the RCS soil. Mean nutrient balances for 4 years were -55.9 kg N, +34.7 kg $P_2O_5$, and -0.3 kg $K_2O$ $ha^{-1}$ for the MCS and +19.7 kg N, +107.4 kg $P_2O_5$, and -48.6 kg $K_2O$ $ha^{-1}$ for the RCS, respectively. These nutrient imbalances mean that conventional fertilizer recommendations were inadequate for maintaining soil nutrient balance. From these results, we can conclude that the crop rotation may change comprehensive physical, chemical, and biological soil properties. These changes could affect the nutrient balance and then the crop yield.

  • In an experiment conducted at the research field of the National Institute of Agricultural Science, we investigated the effects of mineral fertilizer and rice straw compost on exchangeable potassium and K balances, and rice grain yield under a rice single system. The treatments were no fertilization (No fert.), inorganic fertilization (N), inorganic fertilizer (N, P, K) plus rice straw compost at rates of 7.5, 15.0, 22.5, and $30.0ton\;ha^{-1}$ (NPKC7.5, NPKC15.0, NPKC22.5, and NPKC30.0, respectively). The inorganic fertilizers(N, P, K) were added with standard fertilizer application rate in which nitrogen (N), phosphate ($P_2O_5$), and potassium ($K_2O$) were applied with $75{\sim}150kg\;ha^{-1}$, $70{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, $75{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Exchangeable potassium for NPKC15.0 NPKC22.5, and NPK30.0 treatments was higher by $0.05{\sim}0.19cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ than that of NPKC7.5 treatment. Increasing levels of rice straw compost resulted in an increase in the K balance from - $19.9kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ (No fert.) to $41.9kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ at NPKC22.5 treatment and $62.9kg\;ha^{-1}$ at NPKC30.0 treatment. Continuous application of rice straw compost with NPK fertilizers affected significantly the rice grain yields. The result of the study imply that the application of more than $22.5ton\;ha^{-1}$ of rice straw compost with NPK fertilizers are recommended as the best fertilization practice for enhancement of crop production and K supplying power of soil in the continuous rice cropping system.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of controlled-release fertilizer on growth of Oncidium. Leaf and pseudobulb length increased with controlled-release fertilizer from 2 g to 3 g treatment compared to hyponex and controlled-release fertilizer I g treatment, while leaf width and number of leaf was not significant among treatments. Plant weight increased with controlled-release fertilizer from 2 g to 3 g treatment compared to hyponex and controlled-release fertilizer I g treatment. Flowering date(bloomed October early) did not show significant difference among treatments. The number of flowers showed the most in controlled-release fertilizer 3 g treatment as 62.4 ea/plant, but was not different significantly among treatments. Flower stem length and width were also non-significant among treatments. Branching numbers increased in the controlled-release fertilizer 2 g and 3 g treatments. Mineral elements of shoot increased from 2 g to 3 g treatment rather than the controlled-release fertilizer 1g treatment. Especially, K content was higher compared to N and P content. Therefore, appropriate controlled-release fertilizer amount for Oncidium was recommended as 2 g.

  • No-tillage silage corn with legume hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth, HV) has renewed interest in supply of mineral N, soil erosion control at sloping land and weed control by cover of HV killed. This study was conducted to monitor concentration of soil mineral N ($NO_3^-$ -N + $NH_4^+$-N) and to find out variation of growth, yield and N uptake of silage corn according to quantity of HV cover; HV-removed, 1X-HV, 2X-HV at field of Crop Experiment Station in 1996. HV groM in early spring decreased the mineral N of soil depth 7.5 -22cm before corn seeding. But, killed HV cover increased the concentration of soil mineral N at surface soil (0-7.5cm) up to 45.4mglkg at early growth stage of corn. Dry matter(Dh4) of corn at harvest was lower in W-removed than in Okg FNlha. But DM and N uptake of corn at harvest were increased by quantity of HV-cover increasing liom HV-removed to 2X-HV. Hairy vetch could substitute N fertilizer for silage corn by N mineralized h m HV killed, but reduced early growth and N uptake of corn before silk by reducing soil mineral N of plow layer.

  • The slowly released potassium fertilizer was developed by mixing fly ash with KOH, anthracite coal powder, KCI, $K_2CO_3$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ as the substances for accelerating calcination. Measuring proper ratios of raw materials, we found that the anthracite coal powder was 12 percent and $Mg(OH)_2$ was two to three percent. The optimal calcination temperature and time were proved to be $850^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes, respectively, however, the trial product with lower temperature and shorter time in calcination had low quality. The K solubility of the product was very low compared to that of the KCl fertilizer.

  • Calcined clay granules (pellet) have been used as a soil conditioner. The space among the pellets can secure drainage of water in soil and, simultaneously, can keep water for plants in the inner pore of that. However, the usage of the pellet has been restrained because fabrication of that requires a high energy and cost for heating over the temperate of $1000^{\circ}C$. Recently, SCS(Self-propagating Combustion and Sintering) method was developed and this method use the combustion energy of the preliminary mixed combustible. The SCS method is suitable to fabrication of small porous aggregate and requires a very low cost. This research applied the SCS method to coal refuses for fabrication of soil conditioner pellets. The coal refuses were pulverized under the size of $100{\mu}m$ and the pulverized powders were pelletized to the size of 4~6mm. The pellets were heated at the temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ in the SCS furnace that was specially prepared for this research. Characteristics of the pellets were investigated and were compared with that of ordinary calcined clay pellet of kaolin; porosity, pore size distribution, bulk density, pH and etc.. Characteristics of the moisture retention in the pellets were measured by the centrifugal method: ASTM D425-88. The pellets of the coal refuses showed the higher values of the field capacity and the plant-available water than that of kaolin pellet. These results suggest the very low cost process that can utilize the coal refuses and can fabricate the lightweight porous soil conditioner of the very high plant-available water.
