  • An enzymatic flour milling process for barley into three major fractions (barley flour, bran-crease-germ and water solubles) was studied. Carbohydrate and protein of barley endosperm could be efficiently solubilized by the digestion process of partially pearled barley with enzymes. Bran, crease and germ were removed from hydrolyzate by filtering through 30-40mesh sieves. And then filtered product was separated into fractions by sedimentation or centrifugation. The most effective digestion of the barley was obtained by the enzyme with higher activities of glucanase and protease under such conditions as barley-water ratio, 1:1.5(W/V) and temperature at $45^{\circ}C$. Total flour yield recovered was approximately 73-76% of the barley, and the portions recovered as bran-crease-germ and water solubles were about 3.6 and 15.8%, respectively.

  • In this study, we secured a technology for manufacturing expanded glass of uniform quality by using general tempered glass, that is, window glass, among automotive glass that is scrapped, and verified whether the manufactured expanded glass can be used for lithium battery fire suppression. The process of manufacturing expanded glass using waste glass is generally divided into Crushing → Milling → Granulation → Expansion → Cooling. With several trials a nd errors. It is obtained a yield of 0.5 ø mm to 2 ø mm spherical particles of 80 % or more. By comparing the surface analysis and physical properties, a more suitable sample was selected as a fire extinguishing agent for lithium batteries, and it was confirmed that the result of the adaptability test for lithium battery fire was satisfactory.

  • Consumption of waxy corn is steadily increasing due to consumer preference for natural food. However, availability of waxy corn is limited because most of them are used for steamed waxy corn. It is therefore important to create new demands of waxy corn using food processing technology. There is little prior research about characteristics of milled kernel in waxy corn. This study examined the physicochemical and cooking properties of milled kernel using nine waxy corn hybrids. Colored hybrids (Heukjinju, Miheukchal, and Eolrukchal1) showed high milling yield and low change of grain length after milling process compared to other hybrids. The total starch content ranged from 62.1 to 68.4% and the gelatinization temperature of starch was lowest in Yeonnong1 ($69.9^{\circ}C$). The breakdown viscosity of Yeonnong1, Miheukchal and Heukjinju was higher than those of tested hybrids, whereas setback viscosity of those hybrids was lower. In cooking properties of milled waxy corn, water absorption and volume expansion rate were high in Yeonnong2 (84.9, 219.3%), Miheukchal (85.9, 211.4%), and Heukjinju (80.9, 203.7%). In the sensory test, the overall preference was significantly higher in Heukjinju and Miheukchal. Thus, Heukjinju, Yeonnong2, and Miheukchal showed good scores in milling yield, cooking properties, and the preference of sensory test. These results will provide fundamental information to extend milled waxy corns usage.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant compounds and their activities of the methanolic extracts from milling fractions of sorghum. To determine the antioxidant compounds in the methanolic extract from the milling fractions, the content of polyphenol, flavonoids, tannin, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidin were measured by spectrophotometric methods. These were evaluated for antioxidative activities by ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging assays. The extraction yield of hull, bran and grain of sorghum were 9.95, 19.05 and 2.94%, respectively. The methanolic extracts from sorghum bran showed generally higher antioxidant activities than the extracts from hull and grain of sorghum. In addition, antioxidant compounds distributed much higher contents in sorghum bran extract than in the extracts from hull and grain of sorghum. A significant correlation was also noted between free radical scavenging activity and polyphenolic compounds. The results of this study show that notable antioxidant activity in sorghum bran is considered to have significant health benefits.

  • This study was done to determine the optimum sowing time for spring sowing wheat in the southern region of the entire Korean peninsula. Jokyoung and Keumkangmil were sown four times at one-week intervals starting from Feb. 14, 2013. The thousand grain weights of the two wheat varieties were the highest on February 14 with the seed weights ranging from 36.6 to 40 g and significantly decreasing as the seeding time was delayed. The unmatured grain percentage increased sharply when both cultivars were sown starting on March 7. The grain yields were the highest for Keumkangmil with 3.07 MT/ha when sowed on February 21 and 3.37 MT/ha for Jokyoung when sowed on February 14. In both cultivars, the grain yield decreased drastically when they were sown on March 7. Ash content did increase when the sowing date was delayed. The flour gluten index was the highest at 96.2 in Keumkangmil with a February 28 sowing, and the sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) segmentation was the lowest ranging from 63.8 to 65.3 mL with the February 28 sowing. The falling number tended to increase with the delay of the sowing period. The flour milling rate was gradually decreased with the delay of sowing, and the bran gradually decreased. When both cultivars were sown after February 28, the grain and flour yields sharply decreased. In the southern region, the optimum time for the spring sowing of wheat is from February 14 to February 21.

  • This study was carried out to improve the rice grain quality of Ilpum cultivar, especially to reduce the chalky rice rate by controlling top dressing of nitrogen application ratio at the tillering and panicle initiation stage. In the rice plant growth, the number of tiller and leaf area index of maximum tillering stage were influenced by basal dressing and top dressing at tillering stage; however those of heading stage were mainly influenced by top dressing at panicle initiation stage. In yield and yield components, they were influence by the top dressing at panicle initiation stage and the rice yield was increased by percentage of the top dressing. The protein content of rice grain was increased as the rate of top dressing at panicle initiation stage was increased. The rate of chalky and damaged rice was remarkably increased as the top dressing ratio was increased, resulting in reducing the rate of head rice rate. As the results, the characteristics of milling and rice quality was improved when the amount of top dress was reduced as 50% at the panicle initiation stage, and the yield of head rice also increased.

  • In this study, enzymatic hydrolysis of the substrate of the waste wood of Cortinellus edodes was investigated using crude cellulase preparation of Trichoderma viride Pers. ex. Fr. SANK 16374. The crude cellulase was produced by the submerged culture process and produced in the culture fluid was salted out quantitatively by the use of ammonium sulfate. Reducing sugar was determined by the dinitrosalisylic acid (DNS) method. 1. The chemical composition of the waste wood was crude protein 2.26%, c. fat 2.57%, c. fibre 44.60%, c. ash 5.58% and lignin 13.62%. In amino acid composition, no cystine and methionine was showed, but trace amount of Vitamin A, $B_1$, and $B_2$, niacine and chloride were detected. (Table 1) 2. As heat treatment of the substrate was found to produce the highest reducing sugar yield being reacted for 48hr. with T.v cellulase, the substrate was heated to $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. either before or immediately after milling. 3. The substrate heated and ball milled at $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. the reducing sugar yield reached to 11.5%. 4. The substrate without any treatment was found to produce the highest reducing sugar yield being reacted 72hr. with T. v cellulase, the reducing sugar yield reached to 10.1%. 5. The rate of reducing sugar per each treated substrate was decreased by the order of the substrated, heated and then ball milled at $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. (11.5%)> without any treatment (10.1)> ball milled and heated at $190{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. for 45 min. (6.9%). 6. Saccharification of waste wood has been shown to be possible by heat treated and milling the substrate in contact with cellulase. And it is likely to be recommended that the waste wood may be valuable for raw materials of saccharification.

  • Two kinds of oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) 316L stainless steel were manufactured using a wet mixing process(wet) and a mechanical alloying method (MA). An MA 316L ODS was prepared by a mixing of metal powder and a mechanical alloying process. A wet 316L ODS was manufactured by a wet mixing with 316L stainless steel powder. A solution of yttrium nitrate was dried after being in the wet 316L ODS alloy. The results showed that carbon and oxygen were effectively reduced during the degassing process before the hydroisostatic process (HIP) in both alloys. It appeared that the effect of HIP treatment on increase in impact energy was pronounced in the MA 316L ODS alloy. The MA 316L ODS alloy showed a higher yield strength and a smaller elongation, when compared to the wet 316L ODS alloy. This seemed to be attributed to the enhancement of bonding between oxide and matrix particles from HIP and to the presence of a finer oxide of about 20 nm from the MA process in the MA 316L ODS alloy.
