Objectives: Prospective evaluations of the associations between depressive symptoms and suicide deaths have been mainly performed in high-risk populations, such as individuals with psychiatric disorders or histories of self-harm. The purpose of this study was to prospectively examine whether more severe depressive symptoms assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were associated with a greater risk of death from suicide in a general-risk population. Methods: A total of 113 478 men from the Korean Veterans Health Study (mean age, 58.9 years) who participated in a postal survey in 2004 were followed up for suicide mortality until 2010. Results: Over 6.4 years of follow-up, 400 men died by suicide (56.7 deaths per 100 000 person-years). More severe depressive symptoms were associated with greater risk of suicide death (p for trend <0.001). The unadjusted hazard ratios (HRs) in comparison to the absence of depression were 2.18 for mild depression, 2.13 for moderate depression, 3.33 for severe depression, and 3.67 for extreme depression. After adjusting for potential confounders, men with a potential depressive disorder had an approximate 90% higher mortality from suicide (adjusted HR, 1.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.38 to 2.68; p<0.001) than men without depression. Each five-point increase in the GDS score was associated with a higher risk of death by suicide (adjusted HR, 1.22; p<0.001). The value of the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of GDS scores for suicide deaths was 0.61 (95% CI, 0.58 to 0.64). Conclusions: Depressive symptoms assessed using the GDS were found to be a strong independent predictor of future suicide. However, the estimate of relative risk was weaker than would be expected based on retrospective psychological autopsy studies.

The aim of the study was to analyze the distribution of dental filling materials for carious permanent teeth of school children in a city. The study was designed as time-serial study, using the data of the dental survey for children aged 8-, 10- and 12-year children living in Gimhae city. The samples were selected by stratified clusters sampling. The number of surveyed samples in depth-analysis for types of dental filling materials were 567 in 2009 and 331 in 2013, respectively. They had dental restorations on one or more teeth. The changing pattern of used dental filling materials was analyzed between 2009 and 2013. Statistical analysis was conducted according to variables related to dental filling material type; DMFT and DMFS index, number of fissure sealed teeth and surface and surveyed year. Amalgam filling rate decreased from 27.9% in 2009 to 18.8% in 2013, while filling rate of tooth-colored materials increased from 56.1% in 2009 and 68.9% in 2013. Amalgam filling rate was a negative correlation with filling rate of tooth-colored materials or gold and number of fissure sealed teeth and a positive correlation with DMFT index. Filling rate of tooth-colored materials was a negative correlation with filling rate of amalgam or gold and DMFT index and a positive correlation with number of fissure sealed teeth. The light-curing composite resin should be included in the reimbursement range of National Health Insurance to solve an inequity of dental health care services.

To establish a basic cohort which can survey the nutrient and food intake related to the health status of the middle and old-aged vertically, a longitudinal survey of 110 adults over forty years old was conducted three times in Chon-ju city over 5 years (1994-1999), and the influences of health status by changes in their nutrient and food intake were examined in this study. The results were as follows ; The number of subjects was 110(43 man, 67 women), 10.0% in their forties, 28.2% in their fifties, 45.4% in their sixties 6.4% over seventy, and their average age was 61.4. There were decrease of height about 1cm , increase of body fat % and few changes of BMI during the testing period. As the subjects were aging, the percentage of anemia increased, but averages of blood pressure and blood glucose(men : 91.8mg/㎗, women : 90.3mg/㎗) were constant. Total cholesterol increased from 196.7mg/㎗ to 212.6mg/㎗(P 0.05) over five years, and the numerical values for women were higher than that of men. In many cases, lack of nutrient intake was shown, as compared with the Recommended Dietary allowance(RDA) especially calcium and vitamin A(71.7%, 64.9% of RDA). Grains intake showed a tendency to decrease(P 0.01). On the contrary, fruit intake showed a tendency to increase(P 0.001). On whole meal, plant foods were 85.1% and animal foods were 14.9%. As dietary factors influencing health status were investigated, blood glucose was influenced by vitamin B$_2$, potatoes and triglyceride, DBP and SBP were affected by vitamin B$_1$, vitamin C, legumes, fishes, triglyceride and age. Although several supplementary foods are available for pregnant and lactating women, there is a need for foods able to maintain a woman's beauty without any changes in body shape. In this study, four questionnaires about nutrition management, skin care, body shape, and the intent of purchasing beauty supplementary foods, were prepared for an online survey (http://pms8011.wixsite.com/project). A total of 95 answers from 293 women were classified into four groups, based on age, income, occupation, and skin type. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS/WIN Program 22.0. The significances of the F-value analyzed by one-way ANOVA and the differences within the groups were verified by Scheffe's method. All groups were shown to have very high requirements for nutrition management and beauty standards. In the skin patterns, the groups of middle-aged women, house wife and the lower income showed high interests, with a high significance (P<0.01) in ages. With respect to body shape, significant interest was found within the groups of skin type (P<0.05) and age (P<0.001). With regard to supplementary foods, all groups showed a strong intention to purchase, but no significant differences were found. This study indicates the necessity to categorize supplementary foods by the intended target group, such as women planning to conceive, pregnant women, and lactating women.
Purpose: Chondroid syringoma, previously known as 'mixed tumor of the skin', is a rare benign tumor. It usually presents an asymptomatic solitary firm intradermal or subcutaneous slowly growing nodule. It occurs frequently in the head and neck region of middle-aged men. We would like to report an uncommon chondroid syringoma about the clinical and histologic presentation. about the clinical and histologic presentation. Methods: We experienced two cases of chondroid syringoma on the nose and the upper lip, each other. Both masses were totally excised with clear margin. Results: On histologic examination, the masses showed a biphasic pattern-an epithelial component exhibiting apocrine/eccrine differentiation and a stromal component exhibiting myxoid/collagenous change-consistent with the diagnosis of chondroid syringoma. There have been no evidence of recurrence and malignant transformation during postoperative follow-up. Conclusion: There is no one distinctive clinical feature that is specific for chondroid syringoma. However, it should be included in the differential diagnosis of a solid nodule in head and neck region with long standing duration, such as epidermal inclusion cyst, pilomatrixoma, dermoid cyst, sebaceous cyst, neurofibroma, and basal cell carcinoma.
Objective : The present study is aimed at providing basic data to help oriental medical hospitals devise efficient operational plans by analyzing the medical expenses of in-patients in an oriental medical hospital and the factors affecting such expenses. Methods : PASW 18.0 was used to analyze the medical insurance program data of 929 patients who were discharged from a university oriental medical hospital(with 105 sick-beds) during the period from January 1 to December 31, 2010 after treatment under the coverage of health insurance and medical aid. Results : 1) Of all the patients hospitalized, 63.3% were females, their mean age was 52.73 years old, and 87.7% was covered by the health insurance program. The biggest number or 31.2% of the patients were treated by the department of acupuncture, 31.5% suffered mainly from the diseases of musculoskeletal system and connective tissues, and the average length of stay at the hospital was 19.49 days. 2) There were statistically significant differences in total medical expenses by age, clinical department in charge, principal diagnosis, and number of days hospitalized while daily average medical expenses differed depending on age, type of medical security, clinical department, principal diagnosis, and number of days staying at the hospital. 3) Total medical expenses were found significantly influenced by age, type of medical security, clinical department, principal diagnosis, and number of days hospitalized(explanatory power : 95.9%), whereas type of medical security, clinical department and principal diagnosis turned out to exercise significant influence on the daily average medical expenses(explanatory power : 26.9%). Conclusion : Oriental medical hospitals are suggested to make efforts to ensure geographical and economical accessibility for their main clients, the elderly and middle-aged, as well as to improve satisfaction of the clients with the medical service provided. They are also encouraged to work out systems to specialize in treatment with a focus on chronic degenerative and adult diseases. In addition, they are expected to try to enhance people's awareness of oriental medicine in an attempt to diversify the brackets of clients and increase frequency of their utilization.
