  • This study investigates levels of thinking of elementary and middle school students doing their tasks of explaining and dealing with variability. According to results, on the task of explaining variability in the measurement settings five levels of thinking were identified: a lack of understanding of explanation of the causes, an insufficient understanding of the causes, an offer of physical causes, consideration of unexplained causes as the source of variability, and consideration of unexplained causes as quasi-chance variability. Also, in the chance settings five levels of thinking were identified: a lack of understanding of explanation of the causes, an insufficient understanding of the causes, an offer of physical causes, recognition of chance variability, and consideration of causes of distribution. On the task of dealing with variability in both the measurement and chance settings five levels of thinking were identified: a lack of understanding of dealing with variability, no physical control and improper statistical control, no physical control and proper statistical control, physical control and improper statistical control, and physical control and proper statistical control.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of digital mathematics textbook on spatial abilities, interest and achievement of 6th graders. For this, research questions were set as follow: A. Is there any difference in cognitive ability in the space perception test between the experimental group and the control group. B. What distinctive attributes exist between the experimental group and the control group in the Spatial abilities? C. Is there any difference in learners' interest and achievement between the experiment group and the control group. To investigate the research questions, two classes of 6th grade children were selected from an elementary school in Daejeon and assigned one as experimental group and the other as control group. The experimental group studied mathematics using Digital Textbooks under an individual PC environment while the control group studied using the existing book-type textbooks. The following results and conclusions were obtained from the research. First, the effect of the Digital Textbooks on children's mathematics achievement was not statistically meaningful even though there was some progress in children's achievement. Furthermore, it was not found that the usage of a Digital Textbooks consistently influenced improvement in the students' interest in mathematics. Second, there were some positive changes in the achievement of Spatial ability of the middle subgroup of pretest score in the experiment group. It can have some educational implication that the Digital Textbooks can affect positively to the middle group in mathematics achievement who dominated more than 50% of the class. Third, the number of correct answers was found to be somewhat higher than that of the control group in spatial reasoning items. This means that the learning environment with Digital Textbooks allow more opportunities for manipulating geometric objects physically and mentally. Therefore, It seems necessary to offer various resources such as digital contents for students' geometric learning. For future research, It is strongly recommended to fix the bugs of the digital textbook programs and to upgrade the operating system of the computer.

  • This study is a follow-up to Lee(2019). Lee(2019) investigated the method of collecting information on the curriculum of elementary and middle school math teachers, when differences were observed between elementary and middle school math teachers in the method of collecting information on the curriculum. Following Lee(2019)'s study, this study looked at the perceptions and experiences of high school math teachers in their curriculum. At the time when the curriculum was changed from time to time, the authority for restructuring curriculum was strengthened. In addition, the role of teachers as 'curriculum restructuring practitioners' became important. However, previous studies have pointed out the structural problem that teachers empathize with the necessity of restructuring the curriculum and have a negative perception of the willingness to practice the curriculum. Therefore, the researcher examined high school teachers who are sensitive to the characteristics and evaluation of the highly hierarchical mathematics subjects. A total of six interviews were conducted with ten high school mathematics teachers in three groups of ten years of teaching experience. Through this, it was possible to observe how teachers as curriculum reconstruction practitioners had thought about curriculum restructuring, and I could observe what difficulties teachers' experienced. This suggests that teachers have two ideas for restructuring the curriculum: 'realistic curriculum reconstruction' and 'ideal curriculum reconstruction'. In addition, the teachers found that there are 'sides of incongruity in the school system' and 'difficulties in the management of teachers'.

  • For the last 30 years many researches were conducted to supply a lot of information on brain that were worth using in teaching and learning. They have showed that students received information through multi-path, and used familiar learning sense to present the received informations. However, nowadays only visual materials are mainly used in mathematics classroom. The purpose of this research is aimed to investigate implications of which learning senses are dominated to learn mathematics. Learning sense were catagorized to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic sense according to Politano & Paquin's classification. We surveyed student's learning senses using questionares. Subjects were composed of 141 elementary students, 117 middle school students, 145 high school students,, and 99 college students. T-test were used to investigate whether there are differences in student's learning senses according to grade levels or not.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the research trends of mathematics textbooks to provide implications for future textbook research. For this purpose, 123 research papers related to mathematics textbooks, published in seven professional domestic journals during recent five years, were selected. The papers dealing with Korean mathematics textbooks were analyzed by school levels (i.e., elementary, middle, or high school), mathematics content areas, analytic methods, and implications. The results of this study showed that many studies analyzed elementary mathematics textbooks, specifically in the content strand of number and operations. The frequent analytic foci were given to content areas along with mathematical rigor or the development of alternative mathematics textbooks. In comparison with the previous research trend, there was an increasing number of studies in which detailed implications or ways of re-constructing mathematical topics were discussed on the basis of thorough analysis of textbooks. This study also included an analysis of papers comparing Korean mathematics textbooks with foreign counterparts or analyzing foreign mathematics textbooks to elicit implications for Korean mathematics textbooks in terms of reasons of the comparison, school levels, and analytic foci. This paper closes with implications for textbook research.

  • This study analysed difficult points on the understanding of infinity when the concept is considered as actual infinity or as potential infinity. And I consider examples that the concept of actual infinity is used in texts of elementary and middle school mathematics. For understanding of modem mathematics, the concept of actual infinity is required necessarily, and the intuition of potential infinity is an epistemological obstacle to get over. Even so, it might be an excessive requirement to make such epistemological rupture from the early school mathematics, since the concept of actual infinity is not intuitive, derives many paradoxes, and cannot offer any proper metaphor.
