Deep Space Maneuver by Microwave Discharge Ion Engines onboard "HAYABUSA" Asteroid Explorer

  • The microwave discharge ion engine generates plasmas of both the main ion source and the neutralizer using 4㎓ microwave without discharge electrodes and hollow cathodes, so that long life and durability against oxygen and air are expected. The MUSES-C “HAYABUSA” asteroid explorer installing four microwave discharge ion engines “$\mu$10s” was launched into deep space by M-V rocket No.5 on May 9, 2003. After vacuum exposure and several runs of baking for reduction of residual gas the ion engine system established the continuous acceleration of the spacecraft toward the asteroid “ITOKAWA”. The Doppler shift measurement of the communication microwave revealed the performance of ion engines, which is 8mN thrust force for a single unit with 3,200sec specific impulse at 23mN/㎾ thrust power ratio. At the end of 2003 the accumulated operational time exceeded 8,000 hour and unit. HAYABUSA will execute the Earth swing-by on June 2004 and arrive at the asteroid in 2005 and return to Earth in 2007.

  • On 9/5/2003, the planet probe “HAYABUSA” as MUSES-C project was launched by The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. “HAYABUSA” has microwave discharge ion engines and these engines are characterized by their high efficiency and specific impulse in comparison with chemical engine. A large ion engine can be used as a planet explorer, while a small ion engine can be used as attitude control of small satellite. We have been developing a high thrust density microwave discharge ion engine using “Multi-Monopole Antenna”. The performance of this engine are: ion cost of 344W/A, propellant utilization efficiency of 52% and thrust density of 0.055mN/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for Kr gas flow rate of 2.5sccm, microwave(2.45㎓) power of 32W and acceleration voltage of l.4㎸.

  • Recently, much attention has been given to plasma production under liquid and its applications [1]. However, most of plasma production techniques reported so far utilize high voltage dc, ac, rf or microwave power [2], where damage to discharge electrodes and small discharge volume are remained issues. As an alternative of plasma production method under liquid, we have proposed pulsed microwave excited plasma using slot antenna, where damage to the slot electrode can be minimized and plasma volume can be increased. We have also reported improvement of treatment efficiency with use of reduced-pressure condition during the discharge [3]. To realize low pressure conditions in liquid, various alternative technique can be considered. One possible technique is simultaneous injection of microwave power and ultrasonic wave. Ultrasonic wave induces pressure fluctuation with the wave propagation and is so far used for cavitation production in the water. We propose utilization of reduced pressure induced by ultrasonic cavitation for improvement of the plasma production. Correlation between the plasma production and the ultrasonic power will be discussed.

  • Institute of Space and Astronautical Science of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(ISAS/JAXA) successfully developed and operated the microwave discharge ion engines onboard Hayabusa asteroid explorer. The ${\mu}10$ ion engines feature the cathode-less plasma generation in both the ion generators and neutralizers with the results of long life and high reliability in space. Based on the space achievements of ${\mu}10$ ion engines with 8mN thrust, 3,000sec Isp and 350W consumption power, several programs are currently under developments: ${\mu}20$, ${\mu}10$HIsp and ${\mu}1$. The first is a 20-cm diameter microwave discharge ion engine, aiming to achieve 30mN/kW in the thrustto-power ratio for the asteroid sample return mission larger than Hayabusa. The second is a high Isp version of ${\mu}10$, and exhausts the plasma beam over 10,000sec Isp using 15kV acceleration voltage for deep space missions to such as Jupiter and Mercury. The third is ${\mu}1$ to be adapted to small satellites for drag-free.

마이크로파 조사에 따른 개질화 활성탄의 온도특성 및 벤젠흡착 (Temperature Characteristics of the Modified GAC by Microwave Irradiation and Benzene Adsorption)

  • The purposes of this paper were to monitor the temperature rising courses and spark discharge of the modified granular activated carbon (GAC) by microwave (MW) irradiation and to evaluate absorption of benzene. The GAC coated on $SiO_2$, boron, talc, ferrite was named as the modified GAC. Thermal and spark discharge measurement of virgin GAC and modifed GAC has been carried out using a MW device operating at 2450 MHz under various energy conditions. The results of this paper as follows. First, the modified GAC is more efficient than the virgin GAC in temperature control. Temperature gradient of the modified GAC is more lower than that of virgin GAC. The temperature gradient of GAC was observed in the following order : virgin GAC, Mn-Zn ferrite/GAC, Ni-Zn ferrite,/GAC, $SiO_2/GAC$, Boron/GAC, Talc/GAC. Second, the spark discharge of the modified GAC was diminished, compared with that of virgin GAC. Because of its excellent electrical insulating properties, the coating material prevents the spark discharge. Finally, the benzene adsorption capacity of the modified GAC decreased due to diminishing of adsorption site by the coating material. Considering the temperature gradient and spark discharge of GAC, the GAC coated $SiO_2$ would be appropriate absorbent under irradiation of MW.

  • 일반적인 화학증기증착(CVD : Chemical Vapor Deposition)실험에서 반응기작을 연구할 수 있는 LPCVD (Low Pressure CVD) 장치의 설계 및 제작에 관한 것과, 특히 이 장치를 이용하여 메탄, 수소의 혼합기체와 헬륨을 완충(buffer) 가스로 사용하여 p-type (111) Si wafer 위에 다이아몬드 박막(diamond film)을 얻고자 시도한 것에 대하여 기술하였다. 실험은 두 가지 방법으로 나누어서 행하였다. (1) Si wafer를 반응기 안에 있는 heater(약 480$^{\circ}C$)위에 놓고 두 개의 다른 inlet 가스관을 사용하여 실험하였다. Posphoric acid로 coating된 하나의 관은 microwave discharge시킨 수소 기체를 흘려주는데 사용하였고, 다른 관은 discharge시키지 않은 메탄 기체를 흘려주는데 사용하였다. 그 결과로 무정형 탄소 뭉치 화합물(amorphous carbon cluster)을 얻었다. (2) 수소와 메탄을 동시에 discharge시켜 plasma 상태인 discharge tube안에 Si wafer을 넣고 증착시켜, 그 결과로 다이아몬드 구조를 갖은 반응생성물을 얻었다.

  • 외부자계가 가해진 냉프라즈마에서의 마이크로파 전파 특성을 측정하였다. 직류방전프라즈마는 두 전극판을 구형도파관에 삽입한것과, 또한 유리시설관을 구형도파관에 삽입한 것에서 이루어졌다. 마이크로파 전파방향, 방전관축, 외부자계는 각각 수직이고, 자속밀도, 방전유기, 기체압등이 증가할때 프라즈마를 전파하는 마이크로파의 감쇠 및 흡수는 증가함을 보았다.

  • A microplasma system source based on microwave parallel stripline resonator (MPSR) was developed for the generation of microplasmas in a wide range of pressure from some torr to 760 torr. This source was operated at its resonance frequency that much depends upon not only its discharge gap size but also operated pressure. This paper applied a simple circuit model to analyze the effects of discharge gap size and pressure to resonance frequency and impedance of MPSR in the cases with and without plasma exist inside the discharge gap. In the process of calculating, the conformal mapping method was used to estimate the capacitance of the MPSR. The calculating results by using circuit model agree well with the simulation results that using commercial CST microwave studio software.

마이크로파 조사에 따른 금속이 담지 된 활성탄의 특성 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Activated Carbons Supported Metal by Microwave Irradiation)

  • In this study, the characteristics of granular activated carbon (GAC) supported metal was investigated in an area influenced by flame discharge and temperature variation during irradiating microwave. The modified GAC was formulated by impregnating metal hydroxides of nickel (Ni/GAC), barium (Ba/GAC), copper (Cu/GAC), zinc (Zn/GAC), cobalt (Co/GAC) and lanthanum (La/GAC). Ba/GAC was selected as it showed lack of spark discharge and temperature increasing aspects. Comparison of adsorption and desorption amount of GAC and Ba/GAC showed that adsorption and desorption rate of the GAC were higher than those of Ba/GAC. The results show that the presence of barium can decrease adsorption/desorption rate because of plugging pore of GAC. Toluene regeneration rate of Ba/GAC was better than that of GAC due to barium loading. Finally, GAC with barium can be controled a rapid increasing temperature and spark discharge, increased the regeneration rate of toluene during desorption by irradiating microwave.

Electrochemical Properties of Li[Ni0.2Li0.2Mn0.6]O2 by Microwave-assisted Sol-gel Method

  • $Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ cathode materials have been synthesized by a microwave-assisted sol-gel method. The structure and electrochemical properties of $Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ were studied by X-ray difftactometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and charge-discharge cycler. The powder prepared by microwave assisted sol-gel method showed good crystallinity and well-defined facet shapes. The $Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ electrode delivered a high discharge capacity of 230 $mAhg^{-1}$ at the specific current of 40 $mAg^{-1}$ (0.2 C rate) in the voltage range of 2.0${\sim}$4.8 V. About 60 % of the discharge capacity measured at 0.2 Crate (140 $mAhg^{-1}$) was maintained at a 6 C (1200 $mAg^{-1}$)rate. The cyclic property was also stable and it did not deteriorated at a high Crate.
