  • The importance of cost reduction has grown bigger to ensure the competetive power of products in the electric home appliances industry. Thus, it is necessary to assess the reliability due to drop-impact happenning in process of distribution of microwave ovens with the panel and cavity of thinner thickness for cost reduction. In the present study, the drop/impact simulation using the explicit code LS-DYNA3D has been carried out for improving the impact resistance of a microwave oven. This CAE-based design approach can be successfully applied to enhance the deteriorated dynamic behavior under the impact conditions of dropping height 70cm according to ISTA procedure 2A.

  • Improvement in microwave absorbance has been investigated by insertion of a periodic air cavity in rubber composites filled with magnetic powders. A mixture of $Co_2Z$ hexagonal ferrite and Fe powders were used as the absorbent fillers in silicone rubber matrix. The complex permeability and complex permittivity of the magnetic composites were measured by reflection/transmission technique. In the grid-type magnetic absorbers, the equivalent permeability (${\mu}_{eq}$) and permittivity (${\varepsilon}_{eq}$) are calculated as a function of air volume rate (K) on the basis of effective medium theory. Reduction in the material parameters (especially, dielectric permittivity and magnetic loss) has been estimated with the increase of K. Plotting the ${\mu}_{eq}$ and ${\varepsilon}_{eq}$ on the solution map of wave-impedance matching, wide bandwidth microwave absorbance has been predicted in the magnetic composites with an optimum value of K.

  • A Device is described which intensity modulates a light beam at modulating frequency in the M/W region. A Method of designing a practical crystalline microwave-Freg. light modulator has been described. In addition, Electrooptic properties and operation as light modulator of NH$_{4}$H$_{2}$po$_{4}$ is described. A light path is provided through the crystal into a suitably oriented analyzer. The intensity of the light beam emerging from the latter varies at the same rate as the cavity frequency.

  • This work was to apply the microwave energy to HTST pasteurization of milk in order to prevent undesirable quality changes due to the fouling and overheating on the surface of heat exchanger. A continuous tubulartype microwave pasteurization system was designed using a domestic microwave oven(800w and 2,450MHz). Raw milk was HTST pasteurized$(at\;72^{circ}C\;for\;15\;sec)$ by three methods; by heating in a stainless steel tube immersed in a hot water bath(MP0), by heating in a microwave cavity to a desired temperature and then holding in a hot water bath(MP1) and by both heating and holding in a microwave cavity(MP2). The microbial quality based on the total plate count and Psychotrophic bacterial count was in the order MP0, MP2 and MP1 ; however, the quality difference was not significant(p<0.05) when the initial microbial numbers were involved in the statistical analysis. In addition, the three samples pasteurized by different methods showed the similar microbial quality based on the coliform count and phosphatase activity. The similar microbial quality of the three samples supports the potential use of microwave energy for the pasteurization of milk and other fluid food products.

  • A microwave vacuum (MW/V) dryer was developed for drying short roundwoods, from which woodcraft souvenirs in Korean market are mostly made, and which were hardly dried without defects in a conventional kiln. It consisted of three 1.5 kW magnetrons of 2,450 MHz, a vacuum pump, a load cell of 100 kg and a cavity of $580{\times}580{\times}1,360\;mm^3$. A computer program was developed to switch on or off the magnetrons according to drying schedules, those were based on microwave injection time or the average of wood temperatures. To evaluate the new MW/V dryer the roundwood specimens of rigida pine, poplar and birch were dried. Their log diameters and lengths ranged from 125 to 25 em and from 25 to 50 cm, respectively. In spite of the presence of minor drying defects, the MW/V drying is found to be an effective method for drying short roundwoods. Wooden turneries made of red alder and ash logs were also MW/V dried from green to 4%MC without any degradation. The rates of the MW/V drying were examined for three different lengths of poplar logs.

  • Okamoto cavity was modified to generate high power (2.45 GHz, 2 kW) He, N2 and Ar plasmas with WR-340 waveguide. Many factors which influence to the plasma generation were optimized and investigated for the spectroscopic properties of the He plasma generated. Some of the important factors are the diameter of the inner conductor, the distance between the inner and outer conductors and the distance between the tip of the inner conductor and the torch. After optimization for the He, two torches (a commercial mini torch for ICP and a tangential flow torch made locally) were compared and showed similar results for the helium plasma gas flow of 25 L/min~30 L/min. A tall torch (extended) was used to block the air in-flow and reduced the background intensity at 340 nm region (NH band). Emission intensity was measured for determination of halogen element in the aqueous solution with power and carrier gas flow rate. Electron number density and the excitation temperature were on the order of $3.67{\times}10^{11}/cm^3$ and 4,350 K, respectively. These values are similar or a bit smaller than other microwave plasmas. It has been possible to analyze aqueous samples. The detection limit for Cl (479.45 nm) was obtained to be 116 mg/L and needs analytical optimization for the better performance.

  • Temperature dependences of the unloaded Q(Q$_{0}$) and the resonant frequency ( $f_{0}$) of YB $a_2$C $u_3$ $O_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) microstrip ring resonators and rutile-loaded cylindrical cavity resonators were measured at low temperatures. Dc magnetron-sputtered YBCO films grown on Ce $O_2$-buffered r-cut sapphire (CbS) substrates were used fur this purpose. The surface resistances ( $R_{s}$) of YBCO films measured by both a microstrip ring resonator and a TE $01\delta$/ mode rutile-loaded cylindrical cavity resonator are compared with each other. It turned out that the values of $R_{s}$ measured by the microstrip resonator technique are comparable to those by the rutile-loaded resonator technique at temperatures lower than ~50 K. However, above 50 K, the $R_{s}$ measured by the microstrip resonator technique appeared higher according to the temperature. Our results show that the current crowding effects near the edge of a microstrip resonator become more significant at temperatures near the critical temperature.emperature.e.e.e.e.e.e.

  • We present a systematic study of the heating and pre-sintering behavior of porous copper powder metal compacts. We employ a TE102 single mode microwave system to position the samples in the separated electric field (E) or magnetic field (H) anti-node of the cavity. We observe significant differences in the heating, pre-sintering, and microstructure evolution of the samples due to the individual fields. We note that sample history (whether heated first in the E-field or H-field) greatly effects a difference in heating trends and subsequent heating behavior and does not appear to be solely a thermal process.
