  • Synthesis approaches usually affect the physical and chemical properties of ferrites. This helps ferrite materials to design them for desired applications. Some of these methods are mechanical milling, ultrasonic method, micro-emulsion, co-precipitation, thermal decomposition, hydrothermal, microwave-assisted, sol-gel, etc. These methods are extensively reviewed by taking example of ZnFe2O4. These methods also affect the microstructure and local structure of ferrite which ultimately affect the physical and chemical properties of ferrites. Various spectroscopic techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Ultra Violet-Visible spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, and electron paramagnetic resonance are found helpful to reveal this information. Hence, the basic principle and the usefulness of these techniques to find out appropriate information in ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles is elaborated in this review.

  • The bandwidth limitation of traveling-wave electroabsorption modulator(TW-EAM) is determined by the transit time, the velocity-mismatch between optical-wave and microwave, the impedance-matching, the dispersion and the microwave loss. In this paper, we introduce an hovel impulse response of TW-EAM considering transit time as well as velocity-mismatch. We analyze the effect of transit-time and velocity-mismatch at the same time, using the FDTD method. We investigate the modulation bandwidth by changing the depth of the intrinsic region. We suggest that the optimum depth of the intrinsic region is 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when the absorption coefficient($\alpha$) is 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-1.

  • Plasma spraying method was used to fabricated the microwave absorbing ferrite-silicon carbide on the aluminum-alloy of the fuselage of an aircraft to protect it from RADAR detection. In this paper 15[rm] instead of 34[rm], the mean size of SIC-powder for ferrite-silicon carbide surface films(I) was used. 50(Kg/h) Instead of 70(Kg/h), the powder feed and 100[mm] Instead of 80(mm), spray distance of spray parameters was used. This M/W absorbers were designed experimentally and fabricated trially, as a result of which the relative frequency bandwidth of 2.8% were obtained under the tolerance limits of the reflection coefficients lower than-10[dB], and the maximum absorption thickness becomes 0.5[mm], which is much thinner than that of the conventional ones.

  • Stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric $Y_{3-x}Fe_{5+x}O_{12})$ polycrystalline samples (x=0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.30, -0.05, -0.10, -0.30) were prepared by solid state reaction method. The magnetic properties of the sample were investigated by FMR (ferromagnetic resonance) technique at microwave frequency 5.11 GHz (G-band) and 23.39 GHz (K-band) respectively. The spectroscopic splitting factor g were estimated to be 2.04~2.35 from the derivative absorption lines. As the samples became yttrium $(Y^{3+})$ excess and iron $(Fe^{3+})$ excess, Magnetizations were decreased. But resonance linewidth were increased. To investigate the anisotropy, the angular dependence of resonance magnetic fields were measured. Angular dependence of effective magnetizations were measured by FMR from 77 K to 300 K at K-band microwave frequency (23.39 GHz) and the saturation magnetizations were measured by VSM. The Bloch coefficients B and C were determined by fitting. $M_{eff}(0)$ was obtained by the extrapolation from 80 K. From this result, the spin wave stiffness constant D $(about\; 162~206 \;eV{\AA}^2)$and average square range of exchange interaction $$$(about \;5.84~12.13\;{\AA}^2)$ were determined.

  • Among various metal oxide semiconductors, ZnO has an excellent electrical, optical properties with a wide bandgap of 3.3 eV. It can be applied as a photocatalytic material due to its high absorption rate along with physical and chemical stability to UV light. In addition, it is important to control the morphology of ZnO because the size and shape of the ZnO make difference in physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate synthesis of size-controlled ZnO tetrapods using an atmospheric pressure plasma system. A micro-sized Zn spherical powder was continuously introduced in the plume of the atmospheric plasma jet ignited with mixture of oxygen and nitrogen. The effect of plasma power and collection sites on ZnO nanostructure was investigated. After the plasma discharge for 10 min, the produced materials deposited inside the 60-cm-long quartz tube were obtained with respect to the distance from the plume. According to the SEM analysis, all the synthesized nanoparticles were found to be ZnO tetrapods ranging from 100 to 600-nm-diameter depending on both applied power and collection site. The photocatalytic efficiency was evaluated by color change of methylene blue solution using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity increased with the increase of (101) and (100) plane in ZnO tetrapods, which is caused by enhanced chemical effects of plasma process.

  • Background: Considering the expenses of and difficulties in arsenic speciation by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS), alternative measurement methods should be useful, especially for large-scale research and projects. Objectives: A measurement method was developed for arsenic speciation using HPLC-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC-AFS) as an alternative to HPLC-ICP-MS. Methods: Total arsenic and toxic arsenic species in some seafoods were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry coupled with hydride vapor generation (AAS-HVG) and HPLC-AFS, respectively. Recovery rate of arsenic species in seafood was evaluated by ultra sonication, microwave and enzyme (pepsin) for the optimal extraction method. Results: Limits of detection of HPLC-AFS for As3+, dimethylarsinate (DMA), monomethylarsonate (MMA) and As5+ were 0.39, 0.53, 0.60 and 0.64 ㎍/L, respectively. The average accuracy ranged from 97.5 to 108.7%, and the coefficient of variation was in the range of 1.2~16.7%. As3+, DMA, MMA and As5+ were detected in kelp, the sum of toxic arsenic in kelp was 40.4 mg/kg. As3+, DMA, MMA and As5+ were not detected in shrimp and squid, but total arsenic (iAS and oAS) content in shrimp and squid analyzed by AAS-HVG were 18.1 and 24.7 mg/kg, respectively. Conclusions: HPLC-AFS was recommendable for the quantitative analysis method of arsenic species. As toxic arsenic species are detected in seaweeds, further researches are needed for the contribution degree of seafood in arsenic exposure.

  • The optimization of deacetylation process parameters for producing chitosan from isolated chitin shrimp shell waste was investigated using response surface methodology with central composite design (RSM-CCD). Three independent variables viz, NaOH concentration (X1), radiation power (X2), and reaction time (X3) were examined to determine their respective effects on the degree of deacetylation (DD). The DD of chitosan was also calculated using the baseline approach of the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the yields. RSM-CCD analysis showed that the optimal chitosan DD value of 96.45 % was obtained at an optimized condition of 63.41 % (w/v) NaOH concentration, 227.28 W radiation power, and 3.34 min deacetylation reaction. The DD was strongly controlled by NaOH concentration, irradiation power, and reaction duration. The coefficients of correlation were 0.257, 0.680, and 0.390, respectively. Because the procedure used microwave radiation absorption, radiation power had a substantial correlation of 0.600~0.800 compared to the two low variables, which were 0.200~0.400. This independently predicted robust quadratic model interaction has been validated for predicting the DD of chitin.

  • The fluorine doped silicon oxide (SiOF) intermetal dielectric (IMD) films have been of interest due to their lower dielectric constant and compatibility with existing process tools. However instability issues related to bond and increasing dielectric constant to water absorption when the SiOF films was exposured to atmospheric ambient. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to study the effect of post oxygen plasma treatment on the resistance of moisture absorption and reliability of SiOF film. Improvement of moisture absorption resistance of SiOF film is due to the forming of thin SiO₂layer at the SiOF film surface. It is thought that the main effect of the improvement of moisture absorption resistance was densification of the top layer and reduction in the number of Si-F bonds that tend to associate with OH bonds. However, the dielectric constant was increased when plasma treatment time is above 5 min. In this study, therefore, it is thought that the proper plasma treatment time is 3 min when plasma treatment condition is 700 W of microwave power, 3 mTorr of process pressure and 300℃ of substrate temperature.

  • In this study, we investigated the electromagnetic properties and microwave absorption characteristics of M-type hexagonal ferrites, which are known as millimeter-wave absorbing materials, according to their calcination temperature. The M-type ferrites synthesized using a molten salt-based sol-gel method exhibited a single-phase M-type crystal structure at calcination temperatures above 850℃. The synthesized particle size increased as well with the calcination temperature. Saturation magnetization increased gradually with increasing calcination temperature, but coercivity reached a maximum at 1050℃ and then rapidly decreased. After preparing a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite containing 70 wt% of M-type ferrites, we measured the complex permittivity and permeability in the Q-band (33-50 GHz) and V-band (50-75 GHz) frequency ranges, where ferromagnetic resonance occurred. Strong magnetic loss from ferromagnetic resonance occurred in the 50 GHz band for all composite samples. Based on the measured results, we calculated the reflection loss of the TPU/M-type ferrite composite. By calculating the reflection loss of the M-type ferrite composite, the M-type ferrite calcined at 1250℃ showed excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance of more than -20 dB at 52 GHz with a thickness of about 0.5 mm.
