Hot deformation behavior of GCD-50 cast iron has been investigated by employing the compressive test. Phenomenological deformation behaviors, which were modeled based on the dynamic materials model and the kinetic model, have been correlated with the microstructural change taken place during compression. Microstructural investigation revealed that the adiabatic shear band caused by the locallized deformation was taken place in low temperature and high strain rate. On the other hand, the wavy and curved grain boundaries, which repersent the occurrence of dynamic microstructure change such as dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization, were observed in high temperature and low strain rate. Deformation model based on hyperbolic sine law has also been suggested.
The microstructure and high-temperature plastic deformation behavior of the modified Al-0.7Mn alloy were investigated and compared with the conventional Al-0.3Mn (Al3102) alloy. α-Al (matrix) and Al6(Mn, Fe) phases were identified in both alloys. As a result of microstructure observation, both alloys showed equiaxed grains, and Al-0.7Mn alloy showed larger grain size and higher Al6(Mn, Fe) fraction than Al-0.3Mn alloy. High temperature compressive tests, the deformation temperatures of 410℃, 450℃, 490℃, 530℃ and strain rats of 10-2/s, 10-1/s, 1/s, 10/s, were conducted using Gleeble equipment. The flow stress values of Al-0.7Mn alloy were higher than that of Al-0.3Mn alloy at all strain rates and temperature conditions. Constitutive equations were presented using the flow stresses obtained from experimental results and the Zener-Hollomon parameter. In the true stress-true strain curves of the two alloys, the experimental and predicted values were in good agreement with each other. Based on the dynamic material model, eutectic deformation maps of Al-0.7Mn and Al-0.3Mn alloys were suggested, and the plastic instability region was presented. The modified Al-0.7Mn alloy showed a wider plastic instability region than that Al-0.3Mn alloy. Based on the process deformation maps, the MPE tube parts could be manufactured through the actual extrusion process using the suggested conditions.

The present study introduces a numerical technique to simulate the mechanical behavior of brittle rock, based on a grain-based model combined with Universal Distinct Element Code (GBM-UDEC). Using the technique, the microstructure of rock sample was represented as an assembly of deformable polygonal grains, and the failure process with the evolution of micro tensile cracks under compression was examined. In terms of the characteristics of strength and deformation, the behaviors of the simulated model showed good agreement with the observations in the laboratory-scale experiments of rock.

In this study, to predict the microstructure in weld HAZ of low alloyed steel, prediction model for the phase transformation considering the influence of prior austenite grain size and cooling rate was developed. For this study, six low alloyed steels were designed and the effect of alloying elements was also investigated. In order to develop the prediction model for ferrite transformation, isothermal ferrite transformation behaviors were analyzed by dilatometer system and 'Avrami equation' which was modified to consider the effect of prior austenite grain size. After that, model for ferrite phase transformation during continuous cooling was proposed based on the isothermal ferrite transformation model through applying the 'Additivity rule'. Also, start temperatures of ferrite transformation were predicted by $A_{r3}$ considering the cooling rate. CCT diagram was calculated through this model, these results were in good agreement with the experimental results. After ferrite transformation, bainite transformation was predicted using Esaka model which corresponded most closely to the experimental results among various models. The start temperatures of bainite transformation were determined using K. J. Lee model. Phase fraction of martensite was obtained according to phase fractions of ferrite and bainite.

Although a number of methods have been proposed to predict the liquefaction potential, few methods have been developed by using the characteristic of material's microstructure. In this research, fundamental procedure is proposed for the assessment of liquefaction potential in saturated soils based on the Disturbed Sate Concept(DSC) model which can provide a unified constitutive model for the characterization of entire stress-strain behavior under cyclic loading. From this concept, the value of disturbance at threshold state (Critical Disturbance, $D_C$) in the deforming microstructure provides the basis for initial liquefaction. This method is verified with respect to data from Cyclic Truly Triaxial test for saturated Ottawa sand. Also, the relationship between liquefaction and initial confinig stress is defined using definition of $D_C$. It is believed that the new procedure for identifying liquefaction based on the DSC model can capture the behavior of liquefation, and as a result, it is shown to be on improvement over the available empirical procedures.
Microcapsules consisting of natural, biodegradable polymers for controlled and/or sustained core release applications are needed. Physicochemical properties of whey proteins suggest that they may be suitable wall materials in developing such microcapsules. The objectives of the research were to develop water-insoluble, whey protein-based microcapsules containing a model water-soluble drug using a chemical cross-linking agent, glutaraldehyde, and to investigate core release from these capsules at simulated physiological conditions. A model water soluble drug, theophylline, was suspended in whey protein isolate (WPI) solution. The suspension was dispersed in a mixture of dichloromethane and hexane containing 1% biomedical polyurethane. Protein matrices were cross-linked with 7.5-30 ml of glutaraldehyde-saturated toluene (GAST) for 1-3 hr. Microcapsules were harvested, washed, dried and analyzed for core retention, microstructure, and core release in enzyme-free simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid(SIF) at $37^{\circ}C$. A method consisting of double emulsification and heat gelation was also developed to prepare water-insoluble, whey protein-based microcapsules containing anhydrous milkfat (AMF) as a model apolar core. AMF was emulsified into WPI solution (15${\sim}$30%, pH 4.5-7.2) at a proportion of 25${\sim}$50%(w/w, on dry basis). The oil-in-water emulsion was then added and dispersed into corn oil ($50^{\circ}C$) to form an O/W/O double emulsion and then heated at $85^{\circ}C$ for 20 min for gelation of whey protein wall matrix. Effects of emulsion composition and pH on core retention, microstructure, and water-solubility of microcapsules were determined. Overall results suggest that whey proteins can be used in developing microcapsules for controlled and sustained core release applications.
We reported compositional separation(CS) into Co-enriched and Cri-enriched components inside the grains of Co-Cr based thin films prepared by rf sputtering. CS strongly depends on the sputtering conditions of substrate temperature and target composition. Tuning the microstructure of the Co-Cr films is important in order to employ the CS for high-density magnetic recording. We investigated the origin of CS from thermodynamic viewpoint. We employ a spinodal decomposition-like model to describe the origin of the CS in Co-Cr films. We consider the total free energy of the Co-Cr films as the sum of several free energies of; 1) thermodynamic mixing entropy of a binary solid solution, 2) magnetic ordering interaction(MOI) energy below the Curie temperature, and 3) excess interaction energy(XS) caused by the sputtering process as a function of temperature and composition. Those energies distorted the total free energy like the spinodal decomposition and caused the compositionally separated fine microstructure inside the grains. If the second derivative of the total free energy with respect to Cr composition becomes negative at a given substrate temperature, we may observe a metastable compositional separation inside the Co-Cr alloy films. We expect to exploit the microstructure of CS for ultra-high density magnetic recording.

An electrolytic copper rod was drawn up to $90\%$ in area reduction and annealed under various conditions. The EBSD measurement of the drawn wire showed that in the center region the <111> + <100> fiber duplex texture was dominant, while in the middle and surface regions relatively defused textures developed with a little higher density in <11w>//wire axis. The inhomogeneous texture in the deformed wire gave rise to the inhomogeneous microstructure and texture after annealing. The annealing texture could be classified into the recrystallization texture developed during low temperatures and at the early stage at a high temperature and the growth texture developed after a prolonged annealing at the high temperature. The recrystallization temperature could be explained by the strain energy release maximization model and the growth texture was discussed based on the grain boundary mobility anisotropy.
The post ion implantation has been applied to modify early-grown BN layer and improve the adhesion of the BN films. The effect of ion implantation doses on microstructure and interlayer was investigated by FTIR and HRTEM. And the hardness and delamination life time of N+-implanted BN films were measured. With increasing the ion dose up to $5.0\times10^{15}\textrm{atoms/cm}^2$,the change of IR spectrum is observed. At $5.0\times10^{16}\textrm{atoms/cm}^2$, a drastic transition of cubic phase into hexagonal phase is detected. The change of microstructure of early-grown layers by ion implantation is confirmed using HRTEM. Both microhardness and delamination life time of BN films increase with ion dose. The modification model of early-grown BN layers is briefly discussed based on the displacement per atom and excess boron in the BN film induced by ion irradiation.

A numerical system to extract effective elastic properties of polycrystalline thin-films for MEMS devices is already developed. In this system, the statistical model based on lattice system is used for modeling the microstructure evolution simulation and the key kinetics parameters of given micrograph, grain distributions and deposition process can be extracted by inverse method proposed in the system. In this work, the effective elastic properties of polysilicon, $BaTiO_3\;and\;ZrTiO_4$ are extracted using this system and by employing the fraction of the potential site($f_P$) as a kinetics parameter for the microstructure evolution, the statistical tendency of these materials is studied.
