  • The welding methods have been applied to the most structural products used in the automobile, ship construction, and construction. The structure steel must have sufficient strength of structure; However, the mechanical properties of the welded part changes when it is welded. Therefore, the stability or life of the structure may be affected by the changed mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the welded part must be examined in order to ensure the safety of structure. In this research, the SS400 steel and the STS304 steel were used to estimate the mechanical properties of the HAZ by weld thermal cycle simulation. In this study, the materials were used to examine the weld thermal cycle simulation characteristic, under two conditions: the drawing with diameter of $\Phi$10 and the residual stress removal treatment. To examine the mechanical properties by the weld thermal cycle simulation, the tensile test was carried out in room temperature. The crosshead speed was lmm/min.

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of $TiB_2/Si$ nanocomposites based on the Ti-Si-B system, consolidated by spark plasma sintering of mechanically alloyed activated nanopowders, have been characterized. Mechanical Alloying was carried out in a planetary ball mill for 180 min with 350 rev $min^{-1}$. The powders were pressed in vacuum at a pressure of 60 MPa, generating a maximum temperature in the graphite mould of $1400^{\circ}C$. Analysis of the synthesized nanocomposites by SEM, XRD and TEM showed them to consist of $TiB_2$ second phase, sub-micron in size, with no third phase. Composites consolidated from powders mechanically alloyed from an initial elemental powder mix of 0.3 mol Si, 0.7 mol Ti, and 2.0 mol B achieved the best relative density (97%) and bending strength (774 MPa); the highest Vickers hardness of 14.7 GPa was achieved for the 0.1-0.9-2.0 mol starting composition.

  • We investigated the characteristics of hot-pressed pure yttria ceramics, and annealed them in an oxidation atmosphere. Regardless of the heat treatment in the oxidation atmosphere, XRD analysis showed that all the samples had a $Y_2O_3$ phase without structural change. Even though the color variation of the hot-pressed $Y_2O_3$ ceramics was due to the sintering temperatures, the oxidation process turned the color of the $Y_2O_3$ ceramics into white. The color change during oxidation treatment appears to be related to oxygen defects. In addition, oxygen defects also affected the weight change and microstructure of the $Y_2O_3$ ceramics. The $Y_2O_3$ ceramic sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ had a $5.03g/cm^3$ density, which is close to the theoretical density of $Y_2O_3$. As the sintering temperature increased, small homogeneous grains grew to large grains which affected the Vickers hardness. $Y_2O_3$ ceramics hot-pressed at $1600^{\circ}C$ and annealed at $1200^{\circ}C$ had a flexural strength of 140MPa.

  • The Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ SiC and Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) were fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. Uniform distribution of reinforcements were found in the microstructure of metal matrix composites. Mechanical tests were carried out under various test conditions to clearly identify mechanical behavior of MMCs, and the wear mechanism of Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/(SiC or C) hybrid metal matrix composites were investigated. The tensile strength and hardness of hybrid composites was resulted in increasing compared with those of the unreinforced matrix alloy. Wear resistance was strongly dependent upon kinds of fiber, volume fraction and sliding speed. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites was remarkably improved by the addition of reinforcements. Especially, the wear resistance of the hybrid composites of carbon fibers was more effective than in the composites reinforced with alumina and SiC whiskers of reinforcements. This was due to the effect of carbon fiber on the solid lubrication. Wear mechanisms of hybrid composites were suggested from wear surface analyses. The major wear mechanism of hybrid composites was the abrasive wear at low to intermediate sliding speed, and the melting wear at intermediate to high sliding speed.

  • Lap joint welding conducts low carbon steel plates using a 2.0kW continuous wave Nd:YAG laser beam. The specimen is composed of thin plate of 20 sheets. Process Variables contain two controlled parameters of the laser power and the welding speed. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the lap welding, the welding quality of the cut section, stain-stress behavior, and the hardness of the welded part are investigated. The weld width difference between the top and the bottom because the welding speed is increased. The reason, cooling rate is decreased because of fast welding speed. When the heat input is higher, larger volume of the base metal will melt and the welding heat has longer time to conduct into the bottom from the top. The microstructure and tensile properties of the joints are investigated in order to analyze the effects of heat input on the quality of laser welded specimen. From the results of the investigation, We observe that welding quality is good for the laser power of 1800W, and laser welding speed from 1.8m/min to 2.2m/min.

  • The effect of rare earth elements (R.E)(from 0.0 to 0.04%) on the microstructure formation and mechanical properties of thin-wall ductile iron castings were investigated. Tensile strength and hardness were decreased with an addition of up to 0.03% rare-earth elements. After addition of more than 0.03%, those were increased. Graphite nodule sizes were the finest, nodule count was the highst regardless of thickness and volume fraction of ferrite was the largest when that was 0.02%. However, the nodule count was decreased with increasing R.E. Futhermore. nodule size increased with increasing thickness and the volume fraction of ferrite decreased as that was increased. Nodularity was increased regardless of the thickness as that was increased. The castings of minium thickness up to 3 mm was possible without the formation of chill.

  • This paper studies the main parameters of tube-to-bar dissimilar material and shape friction welding for piping materials. The weldability of joint parts was investigated with respect to tensile tests, micro-Vickers hardness, the bond of area, and optical microstructure. The specimens are tested as-welded. Optimal welding conditions are n = 2000 rpm, HP = 50 MPa, UP = 100 MPa, HT = 5 sec, and UT = 10 sec when the metal loss (Mo) is 11 mm. Moreover, the same two materials for friction welding are strongly mixed with a well-combined structure of micro-particles without any molten material, particle growth, or defects. Therefore, the expected result of dissimilar material friction welding includes a reduction of cost and material in the welding process.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) aluminum composite powders were deposited to form coatings using a high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying process. High thermal energy and contact with atmospheric oxygen were supplied as the MWCNT aluminum composite particles were exposed to a gas flow field at high temperature (${\sim}3.0{\times}10^3$ K) during HVOF spraying. As a result, the particles underwent full or partial melting and rapid solidification due to the high thermal energy, and the exposure to oxygen induced the interfacial reaction of MWCNTs within the particle. The electrical and mechanical properties of MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were evaluated based on microstructure analysis. Electrical resistivity, elastic modulus, and micro-hardness, of the MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were higher than those of pure aluminum coating. The contribution of MWCNTs to the aluminum matrix can be attributed to their high electrical conductivity, dispersion hardening and anchoring effects. The relationship among the properties and the interaction of the MWCNTs with the aluminum matrix is discussed.

  • CD4MCU duplex stainless steel with gadolinium was fabricated as a neutron absorbing material by the air induction melting method. The gadolinium formed intermetallic compounds of Cu-Gd-Fe. There were no significant differences in hardness or ultimate tensile strength between experimental alloys. With the addition of gadolinium the yield strength of the cast alloy significantly increased, from $478.8{\pm}11.6$ to $514.2{\pm}29.9MPa$, whereas elongation of the cast alloy decreased with the addition of gadolinium, from $26.0{\pm}7.1$ to $7.0{\pm}2.5%$ due to the formation of gadolinium based intermetallic compounds.

  • Ball milling of elemental powders in advance and using an induction heating system for intermetallic coatings are known to enhance the reactivity of combustion synthesis. In this work, the effects of simultaneously applying these two incentive methods on the properties of intermetallic coatings are studied. Ni-Al powder compacts ball-milled with three different ball-to-powder weight ratio mixtures are synthesized and coated on mild steel by combustion synthesis in an induction heating system. Consequently, similar to an electrical heating system, the positive effects of ball milling on the combustion synthesis are confirmed in the induction heating system. The enhancement in synthetic reactivity achieved by applying the two incentive methods at the same time is greater than that by applying each incentive method separately. In particular, the enhancement is remarkable at low reaction temperature. However, there are limitations to improving the reactivity by simultaneously applying the two incentive methods to the combustion synthesis, unlike the reaction temperature. The microstructure and hardness of the coating layer are both influenced by the ball-charging ratio employed in the ball-milling process.
