  • In this paper, we study the RF characteristics of the short wavelength thin-film transmission line employing microstrip line (ML)/coplanar waveguide (CPW) composite structure on silicon substrate for application to RFIC (radio frequency integrated circuit). The thin-film transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure showed a wavelength shorter than conventional transmission lines. Concretely, at 10 GHz, the wavelength of the transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure was 6.26 mm, which was 60.5 % of the conventional coplanar waveguide. We also extracted the bandwidth characteristic of the transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure using equivalent circuit analysis. The S parameter of the equivalent circuit showed a good agreement with measured result. According to the bandwidth extraction result, the cut-off frequency of thin-film transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure was 377 GHz. Above results indicate that the transmission line employing ML/CPW composite structure can be effectively used for application to broadband and compact RFIC.

  • This paper discussed on the directive gain improvement method of the U-type ultra wide-band(UWB) planar patch antenna model with CPW feeding. For directive gain improvement, the U-type printed patch antenna model with CPW feeding is reconstructed as a microstrip structure by adding a reflection plane with aperture slot. The reflection coefficient of the reconstructed antenna is less than -6.5 dB(VSWR < 3.3) to the characteristic impedance of $50.08{\Omega}$ and showed the directive radiation patterns with the directive gain of 7.5 dBi ~ 10.1 dBi, the front-back ratio of 17.8 dB ~ 28.7 dB and the range of -3dB radiation angle over ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ to the main beam direction of ${\theta}=0^{\circ}$.

  • This paper presents a design of wide angle steering microstrip Rotman lens operating over broadband frequency range for Electronic Warfare equipments. It has a compact and simple structure which it is easy to manufacture repetitively. The lens is modelled as a 2-dimension planar circuit, the contour integral method is performed over entire lens contour and the transmission coefficients from 8 beam ports to 8 array ports are found. The measured results are well agreed with those of analysis. Prediction of the multibeam array pattern fed by linear array antenna shows $\pm$65$^{\circ}$ of beam steering and $\pm$5 dB insertion loss deviation over 3:1 frequency range.

  • Two substrate integrated waveguide (SIW)-based antennas for the application of software-defined radar are proposed and investigated herein. It is usually well known that SIWs are easily integrated, lightweight, have low insertion loss, and low interference levels compared to conventional microstrip structures. The primary function of the proposed antennas is to transmit continuous waves for indoor motion detection, with the lowest amount of loss and an appropriate amount of gain. Moreover, the results of this study show that the size of the antenna can be reduced significantly (i.e., by about 40%) by applying a meander line structure. The operating frequencies of the proposed antennas are both within the industrial, scientific, and medical band (i.e., 2.4-2.4835 GHz). Measured results of return loss are -16 dB and -20 dB at 2.435 GHz and 2.43 GHz, respectively, and the measured gain is 8.2 dBi and 5.5 dBi, respectively. Antenna design and verification are undertaken through commercially available full electromagnetic software.

  • It is difficult to design accurately the bandgap of metamaterial depending on metamaterial pattern and array configuration. In this paper, we propose a design method for the wanted bandgap frequency using any metamaterial pattern in 2 dimensional array. Metamaterial structure is consisted of periodic array. Therefore the calculation area in FDTD(finite difference time domain) method can be reduced by applying the periodic boundary condition to 2-D metamaterial array. The method for design and calculation the L and C values by using 2-D is also considered. So it can be designed more accurately and rapidly. For example, we designed metamaterial square pattern array in 5 GHz, and compared with the 1-D metamaterial pattern using analysis method in microstrip line. As a result, we found that the accuracy of this proposed method can be incresed to 14.7%.

  • In this paper, a novel notch resonator is proposed based on Rectanglar Split Ring Resonator (R-RSS) element. We represented the electrical characteristics for R-SRR elements coupled with microstrip line, and measured result is compared with electromagnetic simulation (HFSS) result. We also solved equivalent circuit for R-SRR element, and also discussed influences of change structural parameters of R-SRR. the size of R-SRR is the most important parameters for frequency tuning. Also we can make tunable resonator form the basic structure. This novel resonator can apply to design of tunable bandpass filter and voltage control oscillator.

  • This article presents a band-stop filter (BSF) by using a periodic structure property of frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) embedded in a microstrip transmission line. The proposed BSF is designed with FSS unit cells modifying the cross-loop slots. The BSF is interpreted with an equivalent circuit model and a dispersion diagram. The center frequency (fo) of the BSF is 6.6GHz. Proposed filter increases the number of unit cell. As a result, 3dB bandwidth is wider and insertion loss is reduced. Also, Facbricated BSF exhibits uniplanar geometry, simple fabrication.

  • We use conformal mapping method to derive the analytical expressions for calculating electrostatic fields and electric potentials surrounding the conductor-backed coupled coplanar waveguide(CBCCPW) structure. Using the derived expressions, the electrostatic fields and potentials are computed at various points of the CBCCPW's geometry and the field and potential distributions are analyzed. The proposed method provides a faster and simpler calculation of the field distributions than the full-wave analysis method because no iterations are required. This method can be widely applied to the analysis of microwave integrated circuits using coupled line, such as coupler, filter, and microstrip antenna.

  • In this paper, we proposed a slot antenna for dual band ISM that was transformed from a slot antenna structure. Proposed antenna was designed and fabricated that transformed feed line was changed existing slot antenna feed line to appear resonances at dual band. Bandwidth of the designed and fabricated slot antenna for ISM dual band is 8.23%, 4.8% at the resonated frequency at 2.45 GHz, 5 GHz. And we observed the resonant frequency and bandwidth according to change of feed line and slot length. Also, the measured radiation pattern characteristic of fabricated antenna is compared and analyzed E-plane and H-plane at 2.45 GHz, 5GHz.

  • A design method for a multisection impedance transforming branch-line hybrid using a genetic algorithm suitable for MMIC applications is proposed. In contrast to the previous design methods, an asymmetric structure is introduced to optimize the hybrid. Optimization is performed within the impedance range to achieve the realizable hybrids with a microstrip line in a desired frequency range. This design method is applicable to the hybrid which has the arbitrary power division ratio, impedance transforming ratio, isolation, directivity and bandwidth. The hybrid designed by the proposed method has 3∼10% more bandwidth than the previous results.
