  • This study aims to design and implement a traffic model that can simulate the traffic behavior on the microscopic level by using the GIS. In the design of the model, the vehicle in the simulation environment recognizes the GIS road centerline data as road network data reflecting number of lanes, speed limit and so on. In addition, the behavior model was designed by dividing functions into the environmental perception model, time headway distribution model, car following model, and lane changing model. The implemented model was applied to Jahamun-road of Jongno-gu district to verify the accuracy of the model. As a result, the simulation results on the Jahamun-road had no great error compared with the actual observation data. In the aspect of usability of model, it is judged that this model will be able to effectively contribute to analysis of amount of carbon emission by traffic, evaluation of traffic flow, plans for location of urban infrastructure and so on.

  • The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of NaCl concentration on the emulsifying and rheological properties of porcine myofibrillar protein (MF)-stabilized soybean oil and fish oil emulsion (SO-EMs and FO-EMs). Emulsions (EMs) were prepared from 1% MF with 10% SO or FO at various NaCl concentration (0-0.5 M). The emulsifying ability index (EAI) of the EMs increased with increasing NaCl concentration for both oil types. Conversely, increasing NaCl manifested decrease in the emulsion stability index (ESI). In addition, creaming index (CI) also increased with NaCl concentration. From the microscopic observation, droplets of the EMs were more aggregated at relatively higher NaCl concentrations, especially for FO-EMs. All EMs had a gel-like structure owing to G' > G" from the rheological analysis. Comparing the oil types, the emulsifying capacity of SO-EMs was more stable than that of FO-EMs at all NaCl concentrations as determined from the CI value and microscopic observation. Therefore, it can be concluded that SO-EMs and FO-EMs are more stable at relatively lower concentrations of NaCl. In addition, the dispersed stability of SO-EMs was better than that of FO-EMs at the same concentration of NaCl.

  • Background Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) and deoxycholate (DCA) compound has been recently used for the purpose of partial lipolysis and is valued for its efficacy and lower invasiveness compared to liposuction and dermolipectomy used previously. In this article, the authors discuss the efficacy of the PPC dissolved in DCA via an experimental rat study model, along with suggesting a useful animal experimental model for the study of adipose tissue and lipolysis. Methods Bilateral inguinal fat pads of an experimental rat were elevated with the deep inferior epigastric vessel as the sole vascular pedicle. Normal saline was injected on one side as a control group and a PPC and DCA compound was injected on the other side. After 4 days, the rats were euthanized for microscopic tissue examination. The pathology was scored by a sem-iquantitative system in 4 categories: normal fat amount, fat necrosis, inflammatory activity, and stage of fibrosis. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test powered by SPSS packet program was used for statistical analysis and to determine significance. Results Microscopic examination was performed on the obtained samples, and the experimental data of all four categories showed significant histologic differences compared to the control group. All of the data also showed statistical significance by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (P<0.01). Conclusions In the inguinal fat pad rat model, the control group and the experimental group had a differed significantly in the amount of normal fat tissue, inflammation, necrosis, and fibrosis. We recommend the rat inguinal fat pad model used in this study, as it is likely to be useful in related research.

  • Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is an acute respiratory disease, causing economic losses in poultry production. IBV commonly manifests respiratory disease symptoms and poor egg quality in poultry, affecting overall performance of both broilers and layers. IBV infection further predisposes poultry to secondary opportunistic bacterial infections. IBV undergoes rapid genetic evolution resulting in various new strains. There is no cross protection among IBV serotypes which makes full protection against wild-type IBV virtually impossible. In this study, recently isolated IBVs (K24/18, K29/18, K183/18) from Korean broiler farms were genetically analyzed based on S1 gene. According to the results, IBV isolates showed highest homology with QX-IBV. However, phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that isolates were divided into distinct sub-clusters within QX-IBV. To determine pathogenicity of IBV, day-old chicks were challenged with IBV through ocular route. After challenging the chicks, we executed microscopic examination, virus detection in their organs, and observation of clinical signs and mortality. We found that the K24/18, K29/18, K183/18 challenge groups showed 28%, 57%, and 42% mortality, respectively, with high microscopic trachea lesion scores, indicating that these QX-IBV-like strains are pathogenic to chicks and can therefore be a threat to poultry production.

  • The fundamental diagram is a important element in a variety of transportation studies. While various shapes of the fundamental diagram have been proposed and numerous debates on the best-fit fundamental diagram have been made, the reason why the fundamental diagram has many different shapes has not been well explained. This study introduces time sap as a key parameter to understand drivers' behavioral differences at different locations and traffic conditions, then relate to the shape of the fundamental diagram. From the freeway event detector data, it is shown that time gap follows a certain probabilistic distribution and its mean value varies along locations. It also turns out that drivers take different time gaps for different travel speeds. Three different types of time gap-speed diagrams are identified and matched to Greenberg, reversed-lambda, and inverted-V types of fundamental diagrams, respectively. This study explains the characteristics of fundamental diagrams using time gap as a microscopic variable and describes drivers' behavioral characteristics according to traffic and geometric conditions.

  • This study evaluates correlation between petrographic characteristics and weathering grade of low-graded metasedimentary rocks mainly consisting of phyllite. Weathering grade of rock material was determined based on the results of geological survey. The Schmidt hammer test was carried out to obtain estimates of strength of rock materials. Point counting and microscopic observation were also conducted to analyze mineral composition and to measure spacing of foliation for 9 rock specimens. As a result of microscopic analysis, as the weathering grade was lower, the quartz was found more in quantity, consequently making rock stronger against weathering process. On the other side, lower weathering grade of rock resulted in less content of mica which is weak against weathering process. In addition, the rock materials with closer foliation spacing are found to be weaker in strength and have higher weathering grade.

  • Tungsten(W) metal has excellent properties in heat-resistance, corrison-resistance and impact-resistance but W-Metal is hard to sinter because higher than $2,000^{\circ}C$ is required to sinter W-powder. Con-sequently, a deposit technique of Nikel Phosphorus(NiP) on W-powber by the liquid reduction precipitation method was performed. Sintering temperature of the resulting W-NiP composite was lowered around to $1,000^{\circ}C$, and the mechanical properties of the sintered body was studied. The most suitable conditions for NiP thin film deposit on W-Powder by the liquid reduction precipitation method, which are composition, concentration, pH and temperature of the liquid reduction solution, were considered. The activated sintering was carried out in a reducing condition furnace. Components and properties of the sintered body were investigated by the density and the hardness measurements, X- ray diffraction analysis, and microscopic photographs of the surface. Quantity of NiP thin film on W-powder could be varied by the change of the liquid reduction solution composition. The sintering temperature of W-NiP composite powder is lowered to $950^{\circ}C$ from $2,000^{\circ}C$ and the hardness is increased (ca. 720 Hv). Large shrinkage could be observed since density was increased from 5.5 to 11.0 g/$cm^2$ which 86.2% of theoretical density. W metal and $Ni_3P$ crystal were detected through X-ray diffraction on the sintered body. Perfectly activated sintering was observed by microscopic photographs.

  • In the vacuum assisted RTM (VARTM) process that has become the center of attention for manufacturing massive composite structures, a good evacuation of air in the fiber preform is recognized as the prime factor. The microvoids, or the dry spots, are formed as a result of improper gate/vent locations and the mold geometry. The non-uniform resin velocity at the flow front leads to the formation of microvoids in the fibers, whereas the air in the microvoids can migrate along with the resin flow during mold filling. The residual air in the internal voids of a composite structure may cause a degradation of the mechanical properties as well as the structural failure. In this study, a unified macro- and micro analysis methods were developed to investigate the formation and transport of air in resin during VARTM process. A numerical simulation program was developed to analyze the three-dimensional flow pattern as well as the macro- and microscopic distribution of air in a composite part fabricated by VARTM process.

  • The present study was designed to characterize the effects of estrogen receptor agonist (4,4',4'-(4-Propyl-[1H]-pyrazole-1,3,5-triyl) trisphenol, PPT) on liver and kidney in male mouse using a light microscopic analysis. PPT was subcutaneously given to adult male mice at a weekly dosage of 178.6mg/kg in a volume 0.08 ml of vehicle for 3, 5 and 8 weeks. There were differences in body and organ weights between control and the treated groups. Body and kidney weights were decreased in treated group whereas, liver weight was increased. In microscopic observations, sinusoidal diameter in liver of treated group was increased 156%, 216% and 255% on week 3, 5 and 8 respectively. Compared to the control, diameter of proximal convoluted tubules in kidney was increased 37% and 43% or week 5 and 8 in treated group. Whereas, height of epithelial cells in the proximal tubules was reduced at all time points. These results suggest that microstructure of liver and kidney was changed by treatment of estrogen receptor agonist PPT in the male mice.

  • Many cities, recently, have convertedoptimized fixed-time control to adaptive traffic system in the control of their signalized traffic network. The expected benefit from the adaptive traffic system is its ability to constantly modify signal timing to most effectively accommodate changed traffic conditions. While the potential benefits from this control structure may be significant, few studies have compared the effect of implementing this method of signal control against other alternative signal control strategies, because it is too difficult to evaluate the efficiency of the real-time adaptive system. The objectives of this research are : to develop a microscopic simulator and to compare the effect at isolated intersections, corridors, and networks between the fixed signal timing plan and adaptive traffic signal system. This simulator will have allowed more sophisticated analysis techniques for the study of traffic control. Also, this research using this simulator evaluated a real-time traffic responsive signal system used in Seoul Korea
