We investigated the effects of salinity and three food species of microalgae on the growth of three types of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, with the aim of improving mass culture of rotifers in hatcheries. Three types (large, small, and ultra-small) of the rotifer were cultured at 16 ppt and 32 ppt salinity with the green algae Chlorella ellipsoidea, Nannochloris oculata, or Tetraselmis tetrathele. The maximum density and specific growth rate were compared for each rotifer type. Ultra-small rotifers grew significantly faster at 16 ppt salinity than at 32 ppt, and C. ellipsoidea and T. tetrathele promoted significantly higher growth than did N. oculata. However, small rotifers grew significantly better at 32 ppt salinity than at 16 ppt, and small rotifers fed on N. oculata achieved the highest density at 1,185 individuals/ml. Large rotifers grew faster at 16 ppt salinity than at 32 ppt, with a diet of T. tetrathele resulting in the fastest growth. Each type of rotifer thrived under different regimens of microalgae and salinity.
Recently, there is a growing interest in microalgae and the use of microalgae focused on the production of various high value metabolite used in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The key limiting factor in high density algal cultivation is the light and algal growth is defined by light intensity and light penetration depth into the culture medium. The effect of light with various light paths, S/V ratios, light intensities, and 50% duty cycle on the growth of microalgae was examined to enhance microalgal biomass productivity and photosynthetic efficiency. We confirmed that the utilization of efficient light energy was obtained from 4 cm of diameter, 57.6% of S/V ratio, 62 ${\mu}$mol/㎡/s of light intensity.

Recently, bioenergy research using microalgae, one of the most promising biofuel sources, has attracted much attention. Cell disruption, which can be classified as physical or chemical, is essential to extract functional ingredients from microalgae. In this study, we investigated the cell disruption efficiency of Chlorella sp. using low-frequency non-focused ultrasound (LFNFU). This is a continuously physical method that is superior to chemical methods with respect to environmental friendliness and low processing cost. A flat panel photobioreactor was employed to cultivate Chlorella sp. and its growth curve was fitted both with Logistic and Gompertz models. The temporal change in cell reduction by cell disruption using LFNFU was fitted with a Logistic model. The experimental conditions that were investigated were the initial concentration of microalgal cells, relative amplitude of output ultrasound waves, processing volume of microalgal cells, and initial pH value. The optimal conditions for the most efficient cell disruption were determined through the various tests.
Microalgae is considered as one of environmentally sustainable and potential feedstocks to produce biodiesels. However, recent studies on life cycle assessments (LCA) of microalgal buidiesels have shown that energy requirement is not small to produce biodiesel from microalgae, especially during cultivation stage. The costs for carbon sources, nutrients like nitrogen or phosphorous, and water for cultivation can contribute up to 80% of the total medium costs. In the present article, recent trends on the utilization of several promising nutrient sources such as municipal wastewaters, organic fertilizers, combustion exhaust emissions and organic solid wastes were reviewed, and the potential strategies to be used as substitutes of artificial culture media, especially for the biodiesel production, were discussed.
In this study, we assessed the antioxidant properties of tidal pool microalgae, Halochlorococcum porphyrae and Oltamannsiellopsis unicellularis, from Jeju Island, Korea. Specifically, the antioxidant activity of fractions isolated from 80% methanol extract, and digests produced from five proteases and carbohydrases, were investigated. Almost all the fractions and the 80% methanol extract exhibited higher effects on 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest superoxide anion scavenging activity, while both n-hexane and chloroform fractions exhibited higher $H_2O_2$ scavenging activity. Among the enzymatic digests from H. porphyrae and O. unicellularis, all the digests exhibited remarkable DPPH scavenging activities. In nitric oxide inhibition, all the digests recorded significantly higher effects than those of the commercial antioxidants (p < 0.05). Flavozyme and Neutrase digests from H. porphyrae, and Termamyl and Alcalase digests from O. unicellularis, showed significant effects in metal chelating. Lipid peroxidation was significantly inhibited in the ethyl acetate fraction, in the Celluclast and Protamex digests from H. porphyrae, and in the chloroform fraction from O. unicellularis. These findings suggest that the two tidal pool microalgae tested in this study are rich in potential antioxidative compounds, the specific properties of which can be considered for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Among many microalgae cultivation types, heterotrophic culture with low cost carbon sources and energy saving culture method is crucial. A result of estimating the effects of pH on wastewater treatment using heterotrophic growing microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana shows that there was no difference in microalgae growth amount and nitrogen, phosphorus removal rate by wide range of pH(5 ~ 9). From pH 5 to 9, total nitrogen, phosphorous and glucose removal rates were 10.5 mg-N/L/d, 2 mg-P/L/d, 800 ~ 1000 mg/L respectively. This study reveals that C. sorokiniana cannot metabolite glycerol heterotrophically, however, glucose and acetate were proper carbon sources for growth and T-N, T-P and TOC removal. This research highlights the potential of heterotrophic microalgal growth with wastewater treatment plant with wide range of pH and carbon sources.

A result of estimating the effects of initial phosphorus concentration and nitrogen sources on removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater treatment using Scenedesmus dimorphus shows that there was no difference in microalgae growth amount and nitrogen removal amount by phosphorus concentration(5 ~ 60 mg/L). On the other hand, as initial phosphorus concentration increased, phosphorus removal amount was increased by luxury uptake of microalgae. Scenedesmus dimorphus preferred to ammonia when ammonia(40 mg/L) and nitrate(40 mg/L) are simultaneously presented and nitrogen removal rate of ammonia was high at approximately 20 mg/L/day.
Interest in plant-derived food additives has increased recently, with efforts to identify natural antioxidant sources to replace synthetic antioxidants. This study evaluated the antioxidant effects of organic solvent fractions of 80% methanol extracts from Pediastrum duplex and Dactylococcopsis fascicularis microalgae. Among the solvent fractions tested, the ethyl acetate and n-hexane fractions from P duplex effectively scavenged 79.8% and 74.5% of DPPH free radicals, respectively. The chloroform fraction from D. fascicularis showed the strongest $H_2O_2$ scavenging ability (49.7%). The greatest scavenging of hydroxyl radicals (73.1%) was exhibited by the 80% methanol extract from P duplex. Aqueous residue and ethyl acetate fraction from P duplex provided the strongest nitric oxide scavenging (57.7%) and metal chelating effect (82.1%), respectively. Chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions from P duplex and n-hexane fraction from D. fascicularis exhibited significantly greater inhibition of lipid peroxidation than the commercial antioxidants. These results suggested that P duplex and D. fascicularis microalgae having potential anti oxidative compounds with various properties could be utilized in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
Despite the low removal efficiencies reported by previous studies, electro-flotation still stands out among other microalgae removal methods for its economical and environmental benefits. To enhance removal efficiency, the important factors that limit the performance of this method must be investigated. In this study, the possible ways of increasing the removal efficiency of microalgae have been explored by investigating the effects of several important variables in electro-flotation. Eight parameters, namely flotation time, rising time, current density, pH, conductivity, electrode distance, temperature and initial concentration were evaluated using a one-parameter-at-a-time approach. Results revealed that the operational parameters that greatly affected the removal efficiency of microalgae were electro-flotation time, current density, pH, and initial concentration. The effect of conductivity, electrode distance, and temperature on removal efficiency were insignificant. However, they exhibited positive an indirect positive effect on power demand, which is nowadays considered an equally important aspect in the running of a feasible and economically efficient electro-flotation process.

To assess the effect of LED lights on marine microalgae growth in the laboatory, Tetraselmis suecica, Chaetoceros simplex and Isochrysis galbana were cultured under $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, Walne's medium and aeration using 3.6 L glass vessels. The LED light sources were Blue, Red, Blue+Red, CoolWhite and WarmWhite. The experiments were conducted three times. The density of microalgae was shown as the counted number of cells per day, and the specific growth rate was calculated by using the density. The statistical analysis was performed by analysis of variance using the SPSS 20.0 program. T. suecica culture was the highest density under the Blue LED light source, so the light source was the most effective for the growth of this alga. C. simplex and I. galbana culture had the highest density under the Blue+Red LED light source, therefore this light source was the most effective for the growth of these algae. The result of analysis of variance showed significant between groups.
