In many industries, particle packing is adopted quite frequently. In the particle packing process, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) can analyze the multi-collision of particles efficiently. Two types of contact models are frequently used for the DEM. One is the linear spring model, which has the fastest calculation time, and the other is the Hertz-Mindlin model, which is the most frequently used contact model employing the DEM. Meanwhile, very tiny particles in the micrometer order are used in modern industries. In the micro length order, surface force is important to decreased particle size. To consider the effect of surface force in this study, we performed a simulation with the Hertz-Mindlin model and added the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory depicting surface force with surface energy. In addition, three contact models were compared with several parameters. As a result, it was found that the JKR model has larger residual stress than the general contact models because of the pull-off force. We also validated that surface force can influence particle behavior if the particles are small.

3D-IC is a novel semiconductor packaging technique stacking dies to improve the performance as well as the overall size. TSV is ideal for 3D-IC because it is convenient for stacking and excellent in electrical characteristics. However, due to high-density and micro-size of TSVs, they should be tested with a non-invasive manner. Thus, we introduce a TSV test method on test prober without a direct contact in this paper. A capacitive coupling effect between a probe tip and TSV is used to discriminate small TSV faults like voids and pin-holes. Through EM simulation, we can verify the size of eye-patterns with various frequencies is good for TSV test tools and non-contact test will be promising.

A micro-mixer with a quasi-active rotor was fabricated, and mixing characteristics were evaluated. The proposed micro-mixer combines an active type micro-mixer with a passive type micro-mixer. The micro-rotor, which is a moving part of an active type micro-mixer, is added in a micro-chamber of a passive type vortex micro-mixer. The rotor rotated by inflows tangent to a chamber, causing strong perturbations. The micro-mixers were fabricated using photosensitive glass. Mixing efficiency of the micro-mixers was measured using an image analysis method. Mixing efficiency and characteristics of the micro-rotor mixer were compared with the vortex micro-mixer without a rotor. Mixing efficiency was reduced as Reynolds number increased at a low Reynolds number due to decrease of residence time. Mixing efficiency at higher Reynolds number, on the other hand, was improved even though residence time decreased since the contact surface between fluids increased by twisted flow. The perturbation induced by rotating rotor at greater than Re 200 improved the efficiency of the rotor mixer.
The roll-to-roll (R2R) fabrication method to make micro-scale pillar arrays for biomimetic functionalization of surfaces is presented. Inspired by the micro-structure of plants in nature, a surface with a synthetic micro-scale pillar array is fabricated via maskless photolithography. After the surface is SAM (self-assembled monolayer) coated with trichlorosilane in a vacuum desiccator, it displays a hydrophobic property even in R2R replicas of original substrate, whose properties are further characterized using various pitches and diameters. In order to perform a comparison between the original micro-pattern and its replicas, surface morphology was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and wetting characteristics were measured via a contact angle measurement tool with a $10{\mu}L$ water droplet. Efficient roll-to-roll imprinting for a biomimetic functionalized surface has the potential for use in many fields ranging from water repelling and self-cleaning to microfluidic chips.

This research describes that the cutting characteristics and tool wear behavior in the micro cutting of three kinds of wear resistant cemented carbides (WC-Co; V40, V50 and V60) using PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond) and PCBN (Poly crystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) cutting tools by use of the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) direct observation method. The purpose of this research is to present reasonable cutting conditions from the viewpoint of high efficient cutting refer to a precise finished surface and tool wear. Summary of the results is as follows: (1) The cutting forces tend to increase as the increase of the weight percentage of WC particles, and the thrust forces was larger than the principal forces in the cutting of WC-Co. These phenomena were different from the ordinary cutting such as cutting of steel or cast iron. (2) The cutting speed hardly influenced the thrust force, because of the frictional force between the cutting tool edge and small WC particles at low cutting speed region such as 2$\mu\textrm{m}$/s. It seemed that the thrust cutting force occurred by the contact between the flank face and work material near the cutting edge. (3) The wear mechanism for PCD tools is abrasion by hard WC particles of the work materials, which leads diamond grain to be detached from the bond. (4) From the SEM direct observation in cutting the WC-Co, it seems that WC particles are broken and come into contact with the tool edge directly. This causes tool wear, resulting in severe tool damage. (5) In the orthogonal micro cutting of WC-Co, the tool wear in the flank face was formed bigger than that in the rake face on orthogonal micro cutting. And the machining surface integrity on the side of the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was better than that with a positive one, as well as burr in the case of using the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was formed very little compared to the that with a positive one.

This paper introduces an experimental device which can measure accurate aerodynamic forces without support interference in wide experimental region for wind tunnel test of micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). A stereo pattern recognition (SPR) method was introduced to a magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS), which can eliminate support interference by levitating the experimental model, to establish wider experimental region; thereby MSBS-SPR integrated system was developed. The SPR method is non-contact, highly accurate three-dimensional position measurement method providing wide measurement range. To evaluate the system performance, a series of performance evaluations including SPR system measurement accuracy and 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs) position/attitude control of the MAV model were conducted. This newly developed system could control the MAV model rapidly and accurately within almost 60mm for translational DOFs and 40deg for rotational DOFs inside of $300{\times}300mm$ test section. In addition, a static wind tunnel test was conducted to verify the aerodynamic force measurement capability. It turned out that this system could accurately measure the aerodynamic forces in low Reynolds number, even for the weak forces which were hard to measure using typical balance system, without making any mechanical contact with the MAV model.
Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is a novel method of fabricating nanometer scale patterns. It is a simple process with low cost, high throughput and resolution. NIL creates patterns by mechanical deformation of an imprint resist and physical contact process. The imprint resist is typically a monomer or polymer formulation that is cured by heat or UV light during the imprinting process. Stiction between the resist and the stamp is resulted from this physical contact process. Stiction issue is more important in the stamps including narrow pattern size and wide area. Therefore, the antistiction layer coating is very effective to prevent this problem and ensure successful NIL. In this paper, an antistiction layer was deposited and characterized by PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) method for metal stamps. Deposition rates of an antistiction layer on Si and Ni substrates were in proportion to deposited time and 3.4 nm/min and 2.5 nm/min, respectively. A 50 nm thick antistiction layer showed 90% relative transmittance at 365 nm wavelength. Contact angle result showed good hydrophobicity over 105 degree. $CF_2$ and $CF_3$ peaks were founded in ATR-FTIR analysis. The thicknesses and the contact angle of a 50 nm thick antistiction film were slightly changed during chemical resistance test using acetone and sulfuric acid. To evaluate the deposited antistiction layer, a 50 nm thick film was coated on a stainless steel stamp made by wet etching process. A PMMA substrate was successfully imprinting without pattern degradations by the stainless steel stamp with an antistiction layer. The test result shows that antistiction layer coating is very effective for NIL.
We have studied the fabrication of silver micro lines using the silver nano sol on ITO substrate by an ink-jet method. The average particles size of $10wt\%$ silver nano sol synthesized with polyelectrolytes was smaller than 10 nm. The pattern formation of silver nano sol on the substrate closely related with the contact angle of the silver nano sol. The dot shaped of silver nano sol on bare ITO substrate was formed due to the high contact angle of silver nano sol. When ITO substrates was treated with 100 ppm polyethylenimine for silver nano sol patterning, fine silver micro lines of $60{\sim}100{\mu}m$ width was fabricated by ink-jet method.

This paper studied the influences of the main design parameter-the expansion angle and the material properties of the self-expansion anterior cruciate ligament fixation device on the contact condition with the bone and the initial stability of the device. Using finite element analysis, the stress distributions of the ring part of the device and the wall of the bone tunnel were calculated. And the micro-migration of the device by the pull-out force was calculated. From the analysis results, it was found that when designing the self-expansion type anterior cruciate ligament fixation device, it is desirable to use the material having higher Young's modulus and to design the fixation device that all wedges uniformly maintain contact with bone to obtain initial stability after operation.

In this paper, we propose a micro vibro tomography(MVT) method, that can be used to visualize two-dimensional cross-sectional images and micro-vibration tomographic images in real time in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. The proposed method is based on the optical coherence tomography(OCT) technique, with an additionally customized image processing algorithm. The proposed method can detect the micro-motions or vibrations in sample structures by measuring the phase shift variations in the sample structures. In this study, we show the potential capabilities of the proposed MVT system for measuring the micro-vibrations generated when sound waves in a frequency range of 2~5 kHz are applied to an $80-{\mu}m$ thick latex phantom, which mimics the changes in physical structure of the human tympanic membrane while hearing. Additionally, three-dimensional volumetric images of the MVT method were recorded to observe the surface morphological changes in the surface of the phantom sample which mimics the human tympanic membrane while hearing.
