  • To investigate the pyrolytic and anatomical characteristics of Korean softwood, Pinus densi-flora, Pinus rigida and Larix leptolepis, and hardwood, Acer palntatum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Quercus variabilis, chemical components analysis, TG-DTA (Thermogravimetric Analysis & Differential Thermal Analysis), MBA (Methylene Blue Adsorption) test and SEM observation were carried out. For TG-DTA, samples were carbonized up to $800^{\circ}C$ at the heating rate of $10^{\circ}C$/min under $N_2$ flows 1 l/min using thermogravimetric analyzer. Chemical component analysis of all samples resulted in typical contents of major wood component. In TG-DTA results, softwood showed higher char yield than hardwood, and lignin displayed the highest char yield among the major wood components. All samples showed typical TGA, DTG and DTA curves for wood pyrolysis except a few differences between softwood and hardwood. Content of lignin influenced its pyrolysis characteristics, while molecular structure of lignin affected not only the weight loss but also the yield of char. In MBA test results, MBA of softwoods was higher than that of hardwoods. Char of Pinus densiflora showed the highest MBA, but its degree was lower than activated carbon or fine charcoal about 23 and 4 times, respectively. SEM observation showed carbonization process preserves wood structure and retain the micro-structure of wood fibers.

  • This study was conducted to investigate changes in the main volatile flavor components of oriental melon during the process of alcohol fermentation via SPME (solid phase micro extraction). The flavor components of oriental melon were shown to have mainly included melon and green flavors. The green flavor was identified to be nonanal, 1-butanol, 1-octen-2-ol and benzene, and its relative concentration was shown to be 16.66%. The nonanal concentration was shown to have been reduced among the green-flavor components, but no significant change in remaining components was observed. Mainly, sweet flavor tended to increase, and the relative concentration of benzene was particularly shown to have increase by 25.58%, accounting for the highest relative concentration. The amount of green-flavor components, except for 1-butanol, was shown to have significantly decrease after alcohol fermentation. Then, no component of green-flavor, which causes an offensive smell, was found during fermentation and aging. Meanwhile, the volatile flavor components, which are consist of acids, were shown to have been produced during alcohol fermentation. In particular, octanoic acid, which causes off-flavor, was shown to be 60.99%, a very high relative concentration during the aging stage. In addition, acetic acid with a pungent sour flavor tended to be produced. A further study on the improvement of flavor in the production of oriental melon wine is required.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the potential use of Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Zanthoxylum piperitum A.P. DC. as a source of antimicrobial agents against food borne pathogens. Essential oils of Z. schinifolium and Z. piperitum A.P. DC. were collected by steam distillation and analyzed by GC-MS. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils was examined using the agar diffusion and micro-dilution assays. The effectiveness of Z. schinifolium essential oil was greater against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus than other pathogens, and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were 1.25, 2.5, and 1.25, 2.5, and $1.25\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Z. piperitum A.P. DC. essential oil was the most effective against all pathogens tested except for Escherichia coli O157:H7, and the MIC values against B. cereus, Salmonella choleraesuis, and V. parahaemolyticus were 1.25, 2.5, and $1.25\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Limonene, the major component of Z. piperitum A.P. DC. essential oils, had the highest inhibitory activity toward V. parahaemolyticus with a MIC value of $0.15\;{\mu}g/mL$. Meanwhile, citronellal and geranyl acetate, major components of both essential oils, displayed antibacterial activity against only B. cereus with MIC values of 1.25 and $5\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Therefore, these essential oils could be useful as antimicrobial agents against foodborne pathogens.

  • The method of measuring the nonlinear effect of ultrasonic waves is suggested as a new approach for the effective evaluation of material degradation. In sonic wave propagation, the existence of nonlinear effect can be demonstrated by the generation of higher order harmonic waves. So, at first, the mechanism of generating higher order harmonic components due to nonlinear effect was explained by using nonlinear elasticity. Next, we attempted to measure how much of the higher order harmonic component was generated in the degraded material. For this purpose, a measurement system mainly based on a high-powered nonlinear ultrasonic signal analysis system was constructed, and SS41 and SS45 specimen intentionally degraded by tensile load and fatigue load were tested. From the results, we confirmed that the measurement of nonlinear acoustic effect may be useful for the evaluation of material degradation.

  • In this paper, we examine Asymmetric Multi-Processing Environment to provide LDW service. Asymmetric Multi-Processing Environment consists of high-speed MCU to support rapid image processing and low-speed MCU for controlling with other ECU at the control domain. Also we designed rapid image process application and LDW application Software Component(SW-C) according to the development process rule of AUTOSAR. To communicate between two MCUs, timer based polling based IPC was designed. Also to communicate with other ECUs(Electronic Control Units), we designed CAN messages to provide alarm information and receiving CAN message to catch the Turn signal. We confirm the possibility of the various ADAS development using an Asymmetric Multi-Processing Environment and AUTOSAR platform. We also expect providing ISO 26262 functional safety.

  • The thermal barrier coating must withstand erosion when subjected to flowing gas and should also maintain good stability and mechanical properties while it must also protect the turbine component from high temperature, hot corrosion, creep, and oxidation during operation. In this study we investigated the influence of subsurface layer, $Al_2O_3$ or NiCrCoAIY bond coat layer, on the indentation damage behavior of YSZ thermal barrier coating layers deposited by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The bond coat is deposited using different process such as air plasma spray (APS) or spray of high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) and the thickness is varied. Hertzian indentation technique is used to induce micro damages on the coated layer. The stress-strain behaviors are characterized by results of the indentation tests.

  • Ti alloy is used for essential parts of aircraft for high temperature environment. Although Ti alloy has excellent performance in regard to mechanical properties, it is difficult ot find fatigue cracks by nondestructive ultrasonic inspection due to its two-phase microstructure, which consists of hard alpha and beta phases. Sound energy reflected from microstructural features in the component produces a background inspection noise which is seen even when no defects are present. This noise can inhibit the detection of critical internal defects such as pores cracks or inclusions. To obtain fundamental data on ultrasonic inspection of Ti alloy, ultrasonic testing was performed using a specimen with small drill holes and ultrasonic wave propagation velocites were measured.

  • This paper examines the damage effect and delay time of CMOS integrated circuits device with coupling caused by high power microwaves. The waveguide and magnetron was employed to study the influence of high power micro-waves on CMOS inverters. The CMOS inverters were composed of a LED circuit for visual discernment. Also CMOS inverters broken by high power microwave is observed with supply current and delay time. When the power supply current was increased 2.14 times for normal current at 9.9 kV/m, the CMOS inverter was broken by latch-up. Three different types of damage were observed by microscopic analysis: component, onchipwire, and bondwire destruction. Based on the results, CMOS inverters can be applied to database to elucidate the effects of microwaves on electronic equipment.

  • An infrared thermography technique can be used to inspect a large area simultaneously and to detect defects such as cracks or delaminations in real time. Infrared thermography is a technique in which visual images are formed from the infrared range from subjects according to their thermal radiation. The molecules of all objects are disturbed by heat, and the molecular motion becomes more active when the temperature rises and less active when the temperature falls. In this study, the applicability and feasibility of ultrasound thermography for detecting defects in an engine block, which is a key component in the automobile industry, were verified. A nondestructive reliability test was conducted to study the defects, after which the results were analyzed.

  • Discrimination studies between microearthquakes and underground explosions are carried out in the pure-continental path of north-south within the Korean Peninsula. The characteristic waveforms for explosions and microearthquakes are investigated in the light of observation and synthetic seismograms. The characteristic waveform generation is minnly a function of source mechanism and ray-path and former influences more strongly than the latter.A double-couple source mechanism for microeatthquakes and a single-couple(force) mechanism for explosions are presented in this study. It is found for very shallow events to have outstanding of $L_g$ waves in the transverse components that pass through the upper crust with period of 1 - 6 seconds and fundamental modes of Rayleigh waves, $R_g$ in the vertical component with period 8-12 seconds. Furthermore it is pointed out that the first arrival amplitudes of SH waves for explosions are always srnall regardless of azimuth of stations since there is non-existence of nodal lines for the explosion mechanism. Theoretical seismograms for explosions show the first motions of compression with short wavelengths as well as mostly fundamental modes of Rayleight waves, $R_g$ waves and $L_g$ waves, whereas those of micro-earthquakes give either compression or dilatation according to the ack azimuth epicenter to stations and poor or non $R_g$ waves and complicated $L_g$ waves, depending on the focal depth.
