  • This paper performed experimental research in order to measure boiling heat transfer coefficient of water in microchannel with hydraulic diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Tests were conducted within the ranges of heat fluxes from 100 to 400 kW/$m^2$, vapor qualities from 0 to 0.2, and mass fluxes of 200, 400, and 600 kg/$m^2s$. From the experimental results, it was found that flow boiling heat transfer coefficient is not dependent on mass flux or vapor quality, but instead on heat flux to a certain degree. The measured data of heat transfer are compared to a few available correlations proposed for mini-channels. Among them, Sun and Mishima's correlation is found to predict the present data well, within the mean absolute error of 17.84%.

  • In order to investigate characteristics of the primary flow and the secondary currents in the meandering channel, laboratory experiments were conducted in the meandering channel made up of alterative bends haying 120。 arc angle. Experiments were performed in two types of cross-sections, a rectangular cross-section and a curved cross-section which was made to adopt a beta probability function. Three-dimensional velocity fields were measured using a micro-ADV. As the result of experiments, in case of the rectangular cross-section, the primary flow occurred taking the shortest course, which is similar to the result of previous researches. In case of the curved cross-section, the primary flow was expected to occur along the thalweg. but it occurred almost along the shortest way. This is considered due to effects of bottom roughness and sinuosity Not only a main cell but also a secondary cell of secondary currents were clearly shown by mean of the stream function. The secondary current intensity has the maximum value near the apex of the second bend for cases of both rectangular and curved cross-sections. However, the value of the secondary current intensity for the curved section is slightly larger than that for the rectangular cross-section. Also, in case of the rectangular cross-section, the higher the ratio of width to depth is, the larger the secondary current intensity is.

  • This paper presents a micro air pump actuated by PZT actuator (synthetic jet actuator) for air supply for micro fuel cells. The synthetic jet actuators are usually created by a traditional PZT-driven actuator, which consists of a small cylindrical cavity, in/outlet channel and PZT diaphragms. To design the micro air pump, a numerical analysis has been conducted for flow characteristics with respect to various geometries. A prototype of the micro air pump, with a size of $mm{\times}mm{\times}mm$, was fabricated by PDMS replication process and was conducted performance test. To control the PZT actuator, we used the SP4423 micro chips that can be amplified input voltage to reduce the controller size and the power consumption. With a voltage of 3V at 100Hz, the air pump's pumping pressure is 600pa and its power consumption is only 0.1mW.

  • A generation of a particle beam is the key technique in a flow cytometry that measures the fluorescence and light scattering of individual cell and other particulate or molecular analytes in biomedical research. Recent methods performing this function require a laborious and time-consuming assembly. In the present work, we propose a novel device for the generation of an axisymmetrical focusing beam of microparticles (3-D focusing) in a single capillary without sheath flows. This work uses the concept that the particles migrate toward the centerline of the channel when they lag behind the parabolic velocity profile. Particle focusing of spherical particles was successfully made with a beam diameter of about 10 ${\mu}$m. Proposed device provides crucial solutions for simple and innovative 3-D particle focusing method for the applications to the MEMS-based micro-flow cytometry. We believe that this device can be utilized in a wide variety of applications, such as biomedical/ biochemical engineering.

  • Roughness, aperture and filling material of rock joint are widely considered to affect the hydraulic characteristics of joint. Among these factors, in this study, the joint roughness was examined with artificial joint profiles generated by Monte Carlo simulating on the original profiles suggested by Barton and Choubey(1977). Original profiles and revised profiles were combined to establish flow channel models, in which the hydraulic characteristics were analyzed numerically on the basis of minimum aperture changes and flow channel shapes. Maximum flow rate was identified at the growing point of flow area after passing through minimum aperture generated by the two profiles, and it was resulted that maximum flow rate is inversely proportional to minimum aperture. Maximum flow rate per unit area showed different values because flow channel shapes and minimum aperture locations are different in each model. In flow channel, mechanical aperture showed approximately 1.07 ~ 3.00 times larger than hydraulic aperture. In this study, mechanical and hydraulic aperture were concluded to be closely related to $A_i$ value, and their relations can be denoted by $e_m=0.519A^{0.7169_i}$ and $e_h=0.6182A^{0.239}_i$, respectively.

  • This paper described a laboratory investigation of micro hydropower at lower head water in a free vortex flow. The vortex height, turbine rotation and torque for straight blade with inner curved edge, twisted blade and curved blade were investigated at the flow rate of 0.0069 ㎥/s in the inlet channel. The results showed that the optimum vortex strength occurred within the range of the diameter of basin to the outlet diameter ratios of 0.17~18.5. The power output and efficiency of straight blade were higher as compared to other blades. The highest amount of generated energy was 12.33 W, the torque was 0.91 N·m and the highest efficiency by considering effective head was 29.5 %, whereas the highest efficiency by considering vortex height was 80.5 % at the rotational speed of 132 rpm. The water vortex velocity of straight blade was about 2.8 times larger than the mean velocity in the inlet channel.

  • This paper reviews the studies on the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Although a lot of studies about the single-phase flow have been done until now, conflicting results are occasionally reported about flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, friction factor, and Nusselt number. Some studies reported the early flow transition due to relatively greater wall effect like surface roughness, but the other studies showed that the flow transition occurred at the Reynolds number of about 2300 and the early flow transition might be due to less accurate measurement of the channel geometry. Also, there have been arguments whether the conventional relation based upon continuum theory can be applied to the fluid flow and the heat transfer in microchannels without modification or not. The studies about the two-phase flow in microchannels have been mostly about investigating the flow pattern and the pressure drop in rectangular channels using two-component, two-phase flow like air/water mixture. Some studies proposed correlations to predict two-phase flow pressure drop in microchannels. They were mostly based on Lockhart-Martinelli model with modification on C-coefficient, which was dependent on channel geometry, Reynolds number, surface tension, and so on. Others investigated the characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels with respect to test parameters such as mass flux, heat flux, system pressure, and so on. The existing studies have not been fully satisfactory in providing consistent results about the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Therefore, more in-depth studies should be done for understanding the fundamentals of the transport phenomena in the microchannels and giving the basic guidelines to design the micro devices.

  • This article presents a numerical and experimental investigation for the single-phase forced laminar convective heat transfer through arrays of micro-channels in micro heat exchangers to be used for cooling power-intensive semiconductor packages, especially the stacked multi-chip modules. In the numerical analysis, a parametric study was carried out for the parameters affecting the efficiency of heat transfer in the flow of coolants through parallel rectangular micro-channels. In the experimental study, the cooling performance of the micro heat exchanger was tested on prototypes of stacked multi-chip modules with difference channel dimensions. The simulation results and the experiment data were acceptably accordant within a wide range of design variations, suggesting the numerical procedure as a useful method for designing the cooling mechanism in stacked multi-chip packages and similar electronic applications.

  • Pollution of the environment by micro-plastics is now a worldwide problem. Plastics are difficult to decompose and put a great load on the marine environment. Especially a plastic with a size of 5 mm or less is defined as micro-plastic and are carried by ocean currents over long distances, causing global pollution. These are not easily decomposed in the natural environment. In this paper, we aimed to experimentally demonstrate that micro-plastics in seawater can be continuously separated by electromagnetic Archimedes force. Using polyethylene particles of 3 mm in diameter as the separation target, a flow channel was fabricated and separation conditions were investigated by particle trajectory calculations for separation experiments. Based on the calculation results, a solenoid-type superconducting magnet was used as a source of magnetic field to conduct separation experiments of micro-plastics in seawater. Although a high separation rate was assumed in the simulation results, the experimental results did not show any significant improvement in the separation rate due to the electromagnetic Archimedes force. It was found that the gas generated by the electrolytic reaction may have inhibited the migration of the particles.
