  • A MEMS solid propellant thruster array shall be operated within an allowable range of operating temperatures to avoid ignition failure by incomplete combustion due to a time delay in ignition. The structural safety of the MEMS thruster array under severe on-orbit thermal conditions can also be guaranteed by a suitable thermal control. In this study, we propose a thermal control strategy to perform on-orbit verification of a MEMS thruster module, which is expected to be the primary payload of the STEP Cube Lab mission. The strategy involves, the use of micro-igniters as heaters and temperature sensors for active thermal control because an additional heater cannot be implemented in the current design. In addition, we made efforts to reduce the launch loads transmitted to the MEMS thruster module at the system level structural design. The effectiveness of the proposed thermo-mechanical design strategy has been demonstrated by numerical analysis.

  • In this paper, the contents of the design and development process of the 6U micro-satellite Snipe (SNIPE, national name Toyosat; small scale magnetospheric and Ionospheric plasma experiment ), which was developed to observe the near-global space environment through polarization flight for the first time in Korea, were described. Snipe performs transversal flight to observe the Earth's surrounding space environment in three dimensions, and aims to simultaneously observe the space plasma density and temperature in the ionosphere, as well as temporal changes in the solar magnetic field and electromagnetic waves. In this way, it was developed by dividing it into a test certification model (EQM) and a flight model (FM) to perform the actual mission for at least six months, away from developing a cube satellite for short-term space technology verification or manpower training. Currently, Snipe, which has completed the development of a total of four FM and completed all space environment tests, is scheduled to launch 2023. In this paper, we introduce the design contents and development process of the Snipe satellite body ahead of launch, and hope that it will be a useful reference for the development of 6U-class micro-satellite for full-scale mission in Korea.

  • This study aims to analyze the micro-sedimentary structures of the Hwangdo tidal flats using ultra-high resolution unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data. Tidal flats, located in the transitional area between land and sea, constantly change due to tidal activities and provide a unique environment important for understanding sedimentary processes and environmental conditions. Traditional field observation methods are limited in spatial and temporal coverage, and existing satellite imagery does not provide sufficient resolution to study micro-sedimentary structures. To overcome these limitations, high-resolution images of the Hwangdo tidal flats in Chungcheongnam-do were acquired using UAVs. This area has experienced significant changes in its sedimentary environment due to coastal development projects such as sea wall construction. From May 17 to 18, 2022, sediment samples were collected from 91 points during field surveys and 25 in-situ points were intensively analyzed. UAV data with a spatial resolution of approximately 0.9 mm allowed identifying and extracting parameters related to micro-sedimentary structures. For mud cracks, the length of the major axis of the polygons was extracted, and the wavelength and ripple symmetry index were extracted for ripple marks. The results of the study showed that in areas with mud content above 80%, mud cracks formed at an average major axis length of 37.3 cm. In regions with sand content above 60%, ripples with an average wavelength of 8 cm and a ripple symmetry index of 2.0 were formed. This study demonstrated that micro-sedimentary structures of tidal flats can be effectively analyzed using ultra-high resolution UAV data without field surveys. This highlights the potential of UAV technology as an important tool in environmental monitoring and coastal management and shows its usefulness in the study of sedimentary structures. In addition, the results of this study are expected to serve as baseline data for more accurate sedimentary facies classification.

  • In this study, correlations between Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) derived Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) values and surface-level $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations at Gosan, Korea have been investigated. For this purpose, data from various instruments, such as satellite, sunphotometer, Optical Particle Counter (OPC), and Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL) on 14-24 October 2009 were used. Direct comparison between sunphotometer measured AOD and surface-level $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations showed a $R^2=0.48$. Since the AERONET L2.0 data has significant number of observations with high AOD values paired to low surface-level $PM_{2.5}$ values, which were believed to be the effect of thin cloud or Asian dust. Correlations between MODIS AOD and $PM_{2.5}$ concentration were increased by screening thin clouds and Asian dust cases by use of aerosol profile data on Micro-Pulse Lidar Network (MPLNet) as $R^2$ > 0.60. Our study clearly demonstrates that satellite derived AOD is a good surrogate for monitoring atmospheric PM concentration.

  • This paper addresses development of the conceptual design program of satellite communication system. A database for more than 200 small satellites of LEO which are between 10kg and 200kg was constructed to conduct a sequential process of conceptual design. General parameters based on the database were derived to be able to use for initial design of satellite communication system. The general conceptual design process developed and programed in this work is applicable to micro-class small satellites without regard to mission types. This conceptual design algorithm is consisted of five sequential steps, in which various parameters are defined every phase. These parameters are utilized for conceptual design through database analysis. The validity of an entire design algorithm has been demonstrated via program simulation.

  • In these days, there have been numerous researches on nano and micro satellites under the slogan of "Faster, Smaller, Better, Cheaper". Since optical structure occupies large portion of satellite volume, research on deployable optical structure gains great attention to reduce total volume of the satellite. In this paper, we establish the requirement of deployable optical structure based on specification of conventional optical structure and propose two candidate mechanisms which can satisfy the degree of deployment precision. Then, in order to evaluate the degree of deployment precision, we carry out kinematic analysis on de-space among tilt, de-space and de-center which influences optical characteristic of a satellite.

  • In this paper, WBG semiconductor such as SiC and GaN were applied as power switches for LCL circuit that can be applied to satellite power systems and the test results of the LCL circuit are reported. P-channel MOSFET and N-channel MOSFET, which were generally used in the conventional LCL circuit, were applied together to expand the utility of the test results. The design and stability evaluation were performed using a Micro Cap circuit simulation program. For the test circuit, a module using each switch was manufactured, and a total of 5 modules were manufactured and the steady state and transient state characteristics were compared. From the experimental results, the LCL circuit for power supply of the satellite power system constructed in this paper satisfied the constant current and constant voltage conditions under various operating conditions. The P-channel MOSFET showed the lowest efficiency characteristics, and the three N-channel switches of Si, SiC and GaN showed relatively high efficiency characteristics of up to 99.05% or more. In conclusion, it was verified that the on-resistor of the switch had a direct effect on the efficiency and loss characteristics.

  • The spaceborne cooler is applied to cool down of the focal plane of the infrared detector of the observation satellite. However, this cooler induces unnecessary micro-jitter which can degrade the image quality of the high-resolution observation satellite. In this study, we proposed a multi-layered blade type vibration isolator to attenuate micro-vibration generated from a spaceborne cooler, while assuring structural safety of the cooler under severe launch loads without an additional launch-lock device. The blade of the isolator is formed with multi-layers in order to obtain durability against fatigue failure and an adhesive is applied between each layers for granting high damping capability under launch vibration environment. In this study, the basic characteristics of the isolator were measured using the free-vibration test. The effectiveness of the isolator design was demonstrated by launch vibration test at qualification level.
