  • N,N,N-Trimethyl-10-nitrophenoxy decylammonium bromide (N10TAB) and N,N,N,N-Tetramethyl-bis-[10-nitrophenoxy decyl]-1,6-hexanediammonium dibromide (N10-6-10N), bearing aromatic nitrophenoxy group in the end of their hydrophobic chains have been prepared, and their properties in aqueous solutions have been studied by conductivity and H-NMR spectroscopy. Below the critical micelle concentration N10-6-10N form premicelle with two or three surfactant molecules. Beyond the critical micelle concentration two molecules have strong self-aggregation ability and form micelles of rather small size and with small aggregation numbers. H-NMR at different concentrations give the informations on the environmental changes of the surfactants on their micellization progress.

  • The syntheses of urocanic acid esters was optimized, starting from p-toluenesulfonic acid salt of this acid and long chain fatty alcohols in the organic solvent and extracting water from it by means of azeotropic Compound. The salts of these urocanic acid esters showed amphoteric properties, but their micellization enhances their rate of hydrolysis leading to the free amine. Nevertheless the long chain gives to the esters themselves an amphoteric character allowing their solubilization in micellar media and in microemulsions the result, yield could enhanced.

  • The micellization behavior and the metal-nanoparticle formation in PDEAEMA-b-PHEGMA double hydrophilic block copolymers are investigated. The hydrophobic PDEAEMA block is pH-sensitive: at low pH it can be protonated and it becomes hydrophilic, leading to molecular solubility, whereas at higher pH micelles are formed; the behavior is studied by DLS, NMR and AFM. In these micellar nanoreactors, metal nanorystals nucleate and grow upon reduction with sizes in the range of a few nm's as observed by TEM and XRD. Similarly, metal nanocrystals can be formed within pH-sensitive microgels (${\sim}250nm$ in diameter), synthesized by emulsion copolymerization of DEAEMA, which also exhibit reversible swelling properties in water by adjusting the pH.

  • Cationic surfactant can be used as cosmetics and chemical dispersants. The variation of critical micelle concentration (CMC) with temperature over the range $40^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ for N-octadecyl pyridinium bromide was measured by drop methods. Thermodynamic quantities such as free energy, enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity for micellization of N-octadecyl pyridinium bromide in water were calculated by fourth-degree polynominal equation In the result, free energy change was decreased generally by the increment of temperature.

  • The critical concentrations of ${\alpha}$-amino capric acid for micelle formation have been determined by the surface tension measurements in both acidic and alkaline solutions, and also by the dye titration using Rhodamine B in alkaline solutions. The critical micelle concentrations obtained by the two methods show the good agreements within experimental errors. Since ${\alpha}$-amino acid is an ampholyte, it may aggregate to form the micelles in both more acidic and basic media than its isoelectric point. It is found that the basic media are rather preferable for the micelle formation than the acidic media. The effect of gegen ions upon the critical concentration for micelle formation in alkaline media is similar to that expected from the salt effect on the CMC (Critical Micelle Concentration).

  • The micellization of dodecylpyridinum chloride (DPC) assembled on aqueous gold nanoparticles has been studied as a function of concentration using Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). At the low concentration, the strong SERS band of the benzene ring moiety was observed at 1025 $cm^{-1}$, and assigned to “trigonal ring breathing”. According to high concentration of DPC, a new strong band was also appeared at 1012 $cm^{-1}$, which was assigned to “totally symmetry ring breathing”. The difference of two spectra seems to ascribe to the geometry of polar head group, i.e., pyridinium cation. These geometry exist flat-down at low concentration, whereas standing-up or tilted geometry at high concentration. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was first obtained from the ratio of intensities of the two bands related to the benzene ring moiety by vibrational spectroscopy, and was about 28 mM. After the CMC, the benzene ring moiety in the micelle state was more restricted than in monomer state because there is no more change of intensities at 1012 $cm^{-1}$. In addition, the size of gold-assembled micelle was estimated using light scattering and it was about 328.3 nm.

  • The polarographic and conductometric studies of methyl viologen $(MV^{++})$ solutions with varying concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) showed strong association of $MV^{++}$ and its cationic radical, $MV^+$., with SDS below the critical micelle concentration. The stoichiometries of these associations were found to be their electric charge ratios. Both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions were found to contribute to the associations. The formation constant of$MV^+.DS^-$ in 0.1 M NaCl was $7{\times}10^3M$. The $MV^{++}$-SDS association was observed to be cooperative leading to formation of large aggregates. In the presence of $MV^{++}$, the micellization of SDS was formation of SDS homo-micelle without direct involvement of $MV^{++}$.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and counter-ion binding constant (B) of the pure cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, CTAB), nonionic surfactants (Tween-20, Tween-40, Tween-80), and their mixed surfactants (TTAB/Tween-20, TTAB/Tween-40, TTAB/Tween-80) in aqueous solutions of 4-chlorobenzoic acid were determined by using the UV/Vis absorbance method and the conductivity method from 284 K to 312 K. Thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^o{_m}$, ${\Delta}H^o{_m}$, and ${\Delta}S^o{_m}$), associated with the micelle formation of those surfactant systems, have been estimated from the dependence of CMC and B values on the temperature and carbon length of surfactant molecules. The calculated values of ${\Delta}G^o{_m}$ are all negative within the measured range but the values of ${\Delta}H^o{_m}$ and ${\Delta}S^o{_m}$ are positive or negative, depending on the length of the carbon chain and surfactant.
