Radiation causes various pathophysiological alterations in living animals, and it causes death at high doses by multiple mechanisms, including direct DNA damage and indirect oxidative stress. The search for useful radioprotectors has been an important issue in the field of radiation biology. Ideal radioprotectors should have low toxicity and an extended window of protection. As many synthetic compounds have toxic side effects, the natural products have attracted scientific attention as radioprotectors. Natural products that have been recently shown to be effective with various biological activities were found to have radioprotective effect. The aim of this review is to summary the recent research of the radioprotective effects of natural foods, especially focused on the glycobiological properties of mushrooms.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the level of psychological insulin resistance and self-care activities and to evaluate the factors affecting self-care activities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus undergoing insulin therapy to provide basic data for the development of educational programs. Methods: Data were collected through the interviews using a structured questionnaire from August 29 to October 20, 2017, from the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus visiting the Diabetes Mellitus Center at H-General Hospital in J-city. The subjects were 168 patients who had been being treated via self-injection for at least three months after the start of insulin therapy. Data analyses were conducted using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using the SAS WIN 9.2 program. Results: The mean score of psychological insulin resistance was 61.25 (range 19-95) and the mean score of self-care activities was 53.19 (range 18-90). Self-care activities were significantly different by gender (t = -2.94, p= .004), perceived health status (F= 7.00, p< .001), and hypoglycemia during the last three months (t= -2.47, p= .015). Negative correlation was observed between psychological insulin resistance and self-care activities (r= -.33, p< .001). Self-care activities were significantly predicted by psychological insulin resistance, perceived health status, gender, and hypoglycemia during the last three months, and 19.0% of the variance in self-care activities was explained (F= 9.01, p< .001). Conclusion: Psychological insulin resistance in patients undergoing insulin therapy and its effects on self-care activities identified in this study will be useful in starting and maintaining insulin therapy in the future.
This research investigated benzimidazole residues (albendazole, fenbendazole, flubendazole, thiabendazole, oxibendazole) in livestock products. A total of 270 samples of livestock products (beef, pork and chicken) were purchased from local markets in Korea. Ethyl acetate was used to extract analytes from the sample, after which ethyl acetate extracts were purified using a MCX cartridge. Analytes were detected using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The limit of detection was 0.01-0.04 ppb, the limit of quantification was 0.03-0.13 ppb, the linearity ($r^2$) was 0.9992-1.0000, and the recovery was 70-85%. Residues of benzimidazoles, except for fenbendazole in pork, were not found in any of the 270 livestock samples. Fenbendazole was detected in the range of 1.2 to 3.1 ppb in 12 samples of pork.
To develop array magnetic sensors, specular-type giant magnetoresistive- spin valve (GMR-SV) film of Glass/Ta(5)MiFe(7)/IrMn(10)NiFe(5)/$O_2$/CoFe(5)/Cu(2.6)/CoFe(5)/$O_2$/NiFe(7)/Ta(5)(nm) was deposited by using a high-vacuum sputtering system. One of 15 way sensors in the area of $8{\times}8mm^2$ was Patterned a size of $20{\times}80{\mu}m^2$ in multilayer sample by Photo-lithography. All of 15 sensors with Cu electrodes were measured a uniform magnetic properties by 2-probe method. The highest magnetic sensitivity of MR and output voltage measured nearby an external magnetic field of 5 Oe were MS = 0.5%/Oe and ${\triangle}$V= 3.0 mV, respectively. An easy-axis of top-free layers of $CoFe/O_2/NiFe$ with shape anisotropy was perpendicular to one of bottom-pinned layers $IrMn/NiFe/O_2/CoFe$. When the sensing current increased from 1 mA to 10 mA, the output working voltage uniformly increased and the magnetic sensitivity was almost stable to use the nano-magnetic devices with good sensitive properties.
A descriptive correlation study was done to provide a basic data for comprehensive nursing care by analyzing the relationship between spiritual wellbeing, hope and perceived health status of the elderly. 195 respondents who lived at their homes and 148 respondents who lived at the facilities for elders such as nursing homes and elder's rehabilitation centers were selected and their age was over 60 years old. Paloutzian and Ellison(1982)'s spiritual wellbeing scale, Nowotny(1989)'s hope scale and Northern Illinois University's health self rating scale was used. From August 10th to August 25th, 1998, ready made questionnaires were handed out by researcher to those who can fill it out and for those who cannot fill out the questionnaires alone, the researcher read it and finished by interview. This study used Pearson's correlation coefficient for the hypothetic test and the average point and standard deviation of spiritual wellbeing, hope, and perceived health status were checked. To find out the difference between spiritual wellbeing, hope, and perceived health status by general characteristics ANOVA and Tukey test were used. The results are as follows : 1. The mean score for spiritual wellbeing of the elders was 42.27($SD{\pm}9.67$) in a possible range of 20-80. The average point of spiritual wellbeing was 2.11($SD{\pm}0.97$) point to 4 point full marks. The mean score of religious wellbeing was 21.37($SD{\pm}7.02$) and that of existential wellbeing was 20.90($SD{\pm}4.63$) in a possible range of 10 - 40. The average point of religious wellbeing was 2.14($SD{\pm}0.70$)points and existential wellbeing was 2.09($SD{\pm}0.46$) points to 4 point full marks. 2. This study is conducted to examine spatial variations of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) in stream and waste waters of the different watershed areas (agricultural, residential, and industrial complex area) by using fluorescence 3D-EEMs (3 Dimensional Excitation Emission Matrix Spectroscopy). Furthermore, the research investigates the changes of DOM characterization by synchronous and 3D-EEMs during a rainfall event. The characterizations of DOM obtained by 3D-EEMs show two noticeable peaks at humic and protein-like regions. Humic-like substances (HLS) are found in rural and urban areas, and humic and protein-like substances (PLS) are shown in industrial area. According to the fluorescence peak $T_1:C_1$ ratios, it is observed that high amount of HLS was discharged from Banweol Industrial Complex (3TG). Additionally, linear relationships (Regression rate, $r^2$=0.65, $r^2$=0.66) have been shown between PLS (peak $T_1,\;B_1$) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), which indicates the impact of sewage. For the rainfall event (30 mm), no remarkable difference of DOM was found at rural area except increment of fluorescence intensity comparing dry period. In contrast, HLS at urban area is highly discharged within 30 minutes from the beginning of rainfall. Also, there are high influences of HLS and PLS within 20 minutes at industrial complex (4TG). Fluorescence 3D-EEMs has not only verifies a watershed of DOM origination but also monitors diffuse and point source impacts.
Acetylcholine (ACh) activates the inwardly rectifying muscarinic $K^{+}$ channel in rat atrial cells via pertussis toxin (PTX)-sensitive G-protein ($G_k$) coupled with the muscarinic receptor (mAChR). Although this $K^{+}\;(K_{ACh})$ channel function has reported to be modulated by the phosphorylation process, a kinase and phosphatase involved in these processes are still unclear. Since either PKA or PKC was not effective on this ATP-modulation, the present study examined the possible involvement of the protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) in the function of the $K_{ACh}$ Channel. In the inside-out (I/O) patch preparation excised from the adult rat atrial cell, when activated by 10 ${\mu}M$ ACh in the pipette and 100 ${\mu}M$ GTP in the bath, the mean open time (${\tau}_{o}$) and the channel activity ($K_{ACh}$) was 1.13 ms (n=5) and 0.19 (n=6), respectively. Following the application of 1 mM ATP into the bath, ${\tau}_{o}$ increased by 34% (1.54 ms, n=5) and $K_{ACh}$ by 66% (0.28, n=6). Channel function elevated by ATP was lasted after washout of ATP. However, this ATP-induced increase in the $K_{ACh}$ channel function did not occur in pretreated cells with genistein ($50{\sim}100 {\mu}M$), a selective PTK inhibitor, but occurred in pretreated cells with equimolar daidzein, a negative control of the genistein. On the contrary, PTP which acts on tyrosine residue conversely reversed both ATP-induced increased ${\tau}_{o}$ by 32% (1.20 ms, n=3) and $K_{ACh}$ by 41% (0.15, n=3), respectively. Taken together, these results suggest that $K_{ACh}$ channel may, at least partly, be regulated by the tyrosyl phosphorylation, although it is unclear where this process exerts on the muscarinic signal transduction pathway comprising the mAChR-$G_{k}$-the $K_{ACh}$ channel.
Cytochrome P4501B1(CYP1B1) is known to be inducible by xenobiotic compounds such as policyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) and dioxins such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-dibenzo-p-dioxin(TCDD). And these induction of CYP1B1 is also regulated by many categories of chemicals. In order to investigate the effects of several chemicals on CYP1B1 gene expression in Hepa-I and MCF-7 cells, 5' flanking DNA of human CYP1B1 was cloned into pGL3 basic vector containing luciferase gene, and then transfected into these cells. After treatment of chemicals, the luciferase activity was measured. CYP1B1 enzyme metabolize PAHs and estradiol. CYP1B1 metabolize estradiol to 4-hydrozyestradiol that is considered as carcinogenic metabolite. Luciferase activity was induced about 20 folds over that control by 1 nM TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachloto-p-dioxin). Recent industrialized society, human has been widely been exposed to widespread environmental contaminants such as PAHs(polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) that are originated from the imcomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. PAHs are known to be ligands of the AhR(aryl hydrocarbon receptor). Induction of cytochrome P4501B1(CYP1B1) in cell culture is widely used as a biomarker for PAHs. Therefore we have studied the effect of PAHs in the human breast cancer cells MCF-7 to evaluate bioactivity of PAHs. We have used the United State of America EPA selected 13 different PAHs, PAHs mixtures and extracts from environmental samples to evaluate the bioassay system. We examined effects of PAHs on the CYP1B1-luciferase reporter gene and CYP1B1 mRNA level. Benzo(k)fluoranthene and dibenzo(a, h)anthracene showed strong response to CYP1B1 promoter activity stimulation, and also CYP1B1 mRNAs increase in MCF-7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Acenaphthene, anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, fluorene, fluoranthene, anphthanlene, pyrene, phenanthrene and carbazole were weak responders in MCF-7 cells. RT-PCR analysis indicated that PAHs significantly up-regulate the level of CYP1B1 mRNA.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the nutrient intakes and food habits among preschool children in Kyungjoo city. The subjects were 210 preschool children, aged 4 - 6 years. Measurements of the weight, height, chest circumference, and head circumference of the children were conducted. And general home environment and factors related to eating habits for preschool children were collected using a questionnaire that included information about family income, parents' education and occupations. The average weight-length index (WLI) for the subjects was $103.9\%$. Using the WLI, $20.0\%$ of the preschool children were underweight, $48.6\%$ were normal, $19.0\%$ were overweight, and $12.3\%$ were obese. On the R$\ddot{o}$hrer index, $13.8\%$ of the preschool children were underweight, $38.5\%$ were normal, and $47.7\%$ were over weight or obese. The average daily intake ($\%$ of RDA) of energy and each nutrient was 1323.5 kcal ($81.3\%$), Ca 484.3 mg ($80.7\%$), Fe 7.05 mg ($88.1\%$), vitamin A 420.0 RE ($105\%$), vitamin $B_{2}$ 0.76 mg ($95.0\%$), vitamin $B_{2}$ 0.87 mg ($87.0\%$), and vitamin C 53.1 mg ($106.2\%$) , respectively. In particular, older subjects had lower intake in RDA $%$ of calcium and iron. The energy intake ratio from snacks was much higher than the recommended level of the preschool children. With regard to frequency of regularity of breakfast, $1.9\%$ of preschool children skipped every morning and $7.6\%$ of the children skipped more than 5 per week. With regard to the intake frequency of vegetables, fruits, complex carbohydrates, and milk, $13.3\%$, $19.9\%$, $22.8\%$, and $41.8\%$ of the children ate more than 5 times per week. The eating habit score was positively correlated (r = 0.18, P < 0.05) with household income. This study suggests that nutrition education to increase fruit and vegetable consumption for preschool children should be emphasized. Also a nutrition education program is needed to enhance consuming calcium and iron intake for adequate growth.
Carrots (Daucus carota L.) are consumed as an important dietary source of provitamin A including $\beta$-carotene, $\alpha$-carotene and lutein. An HPLC method was applied to determine the content of the carotenoid composition in carrot cutivars cultivated in Korea. HPLC analyses were carried out with five carrot cultivars (Socheon-5-chon, Hongsim-5-chon, Myeongju-5-chon, Seonhongbom-5-chon and Betarich) sown at April, 2007 and six cultivars (Yeoreum-5-chon, Hanyeoreum-5-chon, Sinheukjeon-5-chon, Bibariheukjeon, Manina and Betarich) sown at August of the same year. In general, the former varieties are not used for the sowing at summer because of their bolting (growth of floral axis). The former and the latter carrots were harvested after 110 and 96 days from seeding, respectively, and the carotenoids were extracted with acetone after freeze-drying. The amount of $\alpha$-carotene ($117.7{\sim}205.3\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) was similar to that of $\beta$-carotene ($113.1{\sim}189.6\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) for the carrot cultivars sown at spring, while the content ($46.2{\sim}71.1\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) was about a half of $\beta$-carotene content ($92.5{\sim}140.2\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) for the latter cultivars. In addition, the average content of lutein ($25.2\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$) in the former cultivars was eight times higher than that in the latter cultivars ($3.1\;{\mu}g/g{\cdot}DW$). Among the spring cultivation types, Socheon-5-chon and Myeongju-5-chon showed higher amount of $\alpha$-carotene and $\beta$-carotene, while the higher amount was determined in Yeoreum-5-chon and Sinheukjeon-5-chon among the autumn cultivation types. Validation of the HPLC-DAD method showed good linearity ($r^2$ > 0.997) of the three compounds analyzed in a wide concentration range ($0.025{\sim}20\;{\mu}g/ml$). The R.S.D. values for intra-day and inter-day precision were less than 19.2% and the mean recovery of each compound was 85.4~104.7%.
