The purpose of this article is to examine land use change in the fringe area of a metropolitan city through multi-temporal data analysis. Change detection has been regarded as one of the most important applications for utilization of remotely sensed imageries. Conventionally, two images were used for change detection, and Arithmetic calculators were generally used on the process. Meanwhile, multi-temporal change detection for a large number of images has been carried out. In this paper, a digital land-use map and three Landsat TM data were utilized for the multi-temporal change detection Each urban area map was extracted as a base map on the process of multi-temporal change detection. Each urban area map was converted to bit image by using boolean logic. Various urban change types could be obtained by stacking the urban area maps derived from the multi-temporal data using Geographic Information System(GIS). Urban change type map was created by using the process of piling up the bit images. Then the urban change type map was compared with each land cover map for the change detection. Dalseo-gu of Daegu city and Hwawon-eup of Dalsung-gun, the fringe area of Daegu Metropolitan city, were selected for the test area of this multi-temporal change detection method. The districts are adjacent to each other. Dalseo-gu has been developed for 30 yeais and so a large area of paddy land has been changed into a built-up area. Hwawon-eup, near by Dalseo-gu, has been influenced by the urbanization of Dalseo-gu. From 1972 to 1999, 3,507.9ha of agricultural area has been changed into other land uses, while 72.7ha of forest area has been altered. This agricultural area was designated as a 'Semi-agricultural area'by the National landuse Management Law. And it was easy for the preserved area to be changed into a built-up area once it would be included as urban area. Finally, the method of treatment and management of the preserved area needs to be changed to prevent the destruction of paddy land by urban sprawl on the urban fringe.
High-quality and high-resolution meteorological information is essential to reduce damages due to disastrous weather phenomena such as flash flood, strong wind, and heat/cold waves. There are many meteorological observation stations operated by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) in Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). Nonetheless, they are still not enough to represent small-scale weather phenomena like convective storm cells due to its poor resolution, especially over urban areas with high-rise buildings and complex land use. In this study, feasibilities to use additional pre-existing networks (e.g., operated by local government and private company) are tested by investigating the effects of network density on the gridded horizontal distribution of two meteorological variables (temperature and precipitation). Two heat wave event days and two precipitation events are chosen, respectively. And the automatic weather station (AWS) networks operated by KMA, local-government, and SKTechX in Incheon area are used. It is found that as network density increases, correlation coefficients between the interpolated values with a horizontal resolution of 350 m and observed data also become large. The range of correlation coefficients with respect to the network density shows large in nighttime rather than in daytime for temperature. While, the range does not depend on the time of day, but on the precipitation type and horizontal distribution of convection cells. This study suggests that temperature and precipitation sensors should be added at points with large horizontal inhomogeneity of land use or topography to represent the horizontal features with a resolution higher than 350 m.

The modal split structure of the Korea's transportation system has been dominated by road-oriented structure. The shortage of the inftrastructure to accommodate the rapidly increasing travel demand has brought about socio-economic losses such as severe traffic congestion and high logistic costs, and thereby weakened the competitiveness of the country. Highway transportation sector is more vulnerable to energy consumption comparing with railway sector since the highway sector is dependent mostly on fossil fuels for its energy source. In 2006 annual road cogestion costs in Korea reached 24.6 trillion won, with an average annual growth rate of 5.4%. The annual road congestion cost of intercity highways were 9.2 trillion won. As the new cities that recently developed are located far from Seoul area, the boundary of commuting in Seoul metropolitan area is extended. It makes passengers have longer trips with longer travel time, and the congestion problem to be more serious. In this regards, Gyeonggi Provincial Government proposed a deeper underground metropolitan express train system for the greater Metropolitan area. which is named as GTX. Gyeonggi Province suggested 3 key underground lines, based on the outcome of the feasibility study conducted by the Korea Society of Transportation, and submitted to the Ministry of Land Transportation and Maritime Affairs for its review. If the project is approved for construction and completed in 2016, the daily volume of surface traffic bound for Seoul will be reduced substantially and therefore the users will be benefitted for time savings by an annual amount of 2 trilion won every year.
Green composites composed of long maize fibers and poly $\varepsilon$-caprolactone (PCL) biodegradable polyester matrix were manufactured by the thermo-mechanical processing termed as 'Sequential Molding and Forming Process' that was developed previously by the authors' research group. A variety of processing parameters such as fiber area fraction, molding temperature and forming pressure were systematically controlled and their influence on the tensile properties was investigated. It was revealed that both tensile strength and elastic modulus of the composites increase steadily depending on the increase in fiber area fraction, suggesting a general conformity to the rule of mixtures (ROM), particularly up to 55% fiber area fraction. The improvement in tensile properties was found to be closely related to the good interfacial adhesion between the fiber and polymer matrix, and was observed to be more pronounced under the optimum processing condition of $130^{\circ}C$ molding temperature and 10 MPa forming pressure. However, processing out of the optimum condition results in a deterioration in properties, mostly fiber and/or matrix degradation together with their interfacial defect as a consequence of the thermal or mechanical damages. On the basis of microstructural observation, the cause of strength degradation and its countermeasure to provide a feasible composite design are discussed in relation to the optimized process conditions.
The primary purpose of this study is to suggest policy directions for redevelopment project based on analysis of residents' perception on needs and reasons of redevelopment, and development type in old settlements in Daegu Metropolitan City. The main findings are follows. First, the study area is short of public space such as road and parks, occupied by old single detached houses with small parcel. The living environment of the area consist with many 20 years or older two story houses is very poor. Second, most of residents (58.5%) consider economic factors or cheaper rent more serious than other factors such as convenience, amenity, and education facilities. Third, residents want new housing construction even though explanatory power of trash collection, bad smells, privacy is very high in residents' satisfaction. Fourth, most of residents (88.8%) agree redevelopment and show strong preference to high-density apartment construction through demolish-and-development type of redevelopment approach. They are willing to agree the parcellevel redevelopment if governments provides economic supports and temporary settlements. This finding suggests very important policy implications for current government efforts to improve living environment.
This study investigates the impacts of urban land-use fraction and temperature advection on the urban heat island intensity over the Seoul metropolitan area using the UM (Unified Model) with the MORUSES (Met Office Reading Urban Surface Exchange Scheme) during the heat wave over the region from 2 to 8, August 2016. Two simulations are performed with two different land-use type, the urban (urban simulation) and the urban surfaces replaced with grass (rural simulation), in order to calculate the urban heat island intensity defined as the 1.5-m temperature difference between the urban and the rural simulations. The land-use type for the urban simulation is obtained from Korea Ministry of Environment (2007) land-use data after it is converted into the types used in the UM. It is found that the urban heat island intensity over high urban-fraction regions in the metropolitan area is as large as 1℃ in daytime and 3.2℃ in nighttime, i.e., the effects of urban heat island is much larger for night than day. It is also found that the magnitude of urban heat island intensity increases linearly with urban land-use fraction. Spatially, the estimated the urban heat island intensities are systematically larger in the downwind regions of the metropolitan area than in the upwind area due to the effects of temperature advection. Results of this study indicate that urban surface fraction in the city area and temperature advection play a key role in determining the spatial distribution and magnitude of urban heat island intensity.
Computed Tomography Scanner (CT) is highly expensive in operation as well as purchasing. That reason may cause not only to increase the burden of patients but also to waste the capital resources leading to financial difficulties. However the numbers of CT installed throughout the country is increasing, because of efficiency in medical care, patient's concern, competitions among the hospitals within the same area. In the non-Metropolitan area the scanners were expected to be less utilized and less profitable. Nine hospitals equipped with the CT were studied on the utilization of that equipment during the period from November 1984 to February 1985 in non-Metropolitan area and break-even point in one hospital was analyzed for estimating profitabilities. The results were as follows ; 1. Among those nine hospitals, four hospitals had less than 400 beds, which is one of the restrictive minimum standards on the installation of Whole-body Computed Tomography Scanner. 2. The operating time during the normal operation period was longer than those of any other studies, but the accumulated down time was also longer than those of any other studies. The average number of scanning per week for each CT was 45, while the estimated number of for the break-even point was 56.7 cases. 3. When the downtime was excluded in calculating the average operation would be much closer to the cases for the break-even point. Therefore the break-down of the equipment was to be a main cause of the low profitability. 4. The average scanning rate for head area was 33.6%, however three of the nine hospitals showed about 20%. 5. If scanning ratio for the body parts excepting head was increased, the number of scanning for the break-even point would be diminished. 6. The small size hospital especially located near the Metropolitan area showed largest loss in the CT operation. In purchasing the highly expensive equipments in hospitals, demand should be taken into account and planning is recommended.
This study was conducted to measure the diurnal variation and behaviour of atmospheric mercury in an urban area by gold amalgamation and cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were as follows: 1. The Hg concentration in ambient air averaged. 21.13ng/m$^3$ for 111 determinations (C.V. 78.5) in urban area and 5.91ng/m$^3$ for 140 determinations (C.V. 21.3) in suburban area. The urban area concentration was significantly higher and fluctuated more than its rural counterpart. 2. Regression analysis of the interaction between mercury concentration and other components showed a significant correlation between mercury concentration and sulfur dioxide also, TSP were found. Mercury concentration was shown to have a similar behaviour, on the whole, with other air pollutants. 3. It demonstrated a positive correlation with sunlight (UV-ray), while it had a negative response to wind speed and humidity. Its concentration showed a tendensy to increase during calm weather specifically. 4. The Hg concentration at the Mt. Dok You inland clean area ranged from 1.33ng/m$^3$ to 2.0ng/m$^3$, with a mean value of 1.63ng/m$^3$.

Results: Ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, acetaldehyde, and toluene were detected in all samples for monitoring specified odor compounds. The result of contribution analysis is that hydrogen sulfide had the highest contribution in all processes, followed by acetaldehyde. Conclusion: The major components of odor can be determined by evaluating the degree of contribution to the odor intensity and the concentration of the individual odor component. To increase the effectiveness of odor reduction, rather than addressing high-concentration odor compounds, policies focused on materials with a high odor contribution are necessary.
