Rational dynamic modeling and analysis method f3r complex structures are studied with special attention to slide way joints. For modeling of slide way joints, a general modeling technique is used by using the influence coefficients method which is applied to the conversion of detailed finite element model to the equivalent reduced joint model. The theoretical part of this method is illustrated and the method is applied to the structure with slide way joint. In this method, the non-linearity of the contact surfaces is considered within a proper range and the boundary effect of the joint model could be eliminated. The proposed method was applied to finite element modal analysis of a clamp jointed cantilever beam and slide way joints of the vertical type lathe. The method can also be used to other kinds of joint modeling. The results of these analysis were compared with those of Yoshimura models and rigid joint models, which demonstrated the practical applicability of the proposed method.

The objective of this study is to propose a new approach for modelling of burr formation process during orthogonal cutting when the tool exits the workpiece. This approach is based on the rigid-plastic finite element method combined with the ductile fracture criterion and the element kill method. This approach is applied to orthogonal cutting process to predict the fracture location and the fracture angle as well as the cutting force. To validate this approach, orthogonal cutting tests inside SEM(scanning electron microscope) at very low speed are carried out using A16061-T6 to observe the behavior of the material during the chip and the burr formation. The results of the experiment are compared with those of the finite element simulation.
In this work, a stabilized characteristic finite volume method for the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations is investigated based on the lowest equal-order finite element pair. The temporal differentiation and advection term are dealt with by characteristic scheme. Stability of the numerical solution is derived under some regularity assumptions. Optimal error estimates of the velocity and pressure are obtained by using the relationship between the finite volume and finite element methods.

The finite element method is a practical tool to compute the response of the irregularly layered soil deposit to the base-rock motions. The method is useful not only in estimating the interaction between the structure and the surrounding soil as a whole and the local behavior of the contacting area in detail, but also in predicting the resulting behavior of the superstructure affected by such soil-structure interactions. However, the computation of finite element analysis is marched in the time domain (TD), while the site response analysis has been carried out mostly in the frequency domain (FD) with equivalent linear analysis. This study is intended to compare the results of the TD and FD analysis with focus on the peak response accelerations and the predominant frequencies, and thus to evaluate the applicability and the validity of the finite element analysis in the site response analysis. The comparison shows that one can obtain the results very close to that of FD analysis, from the finite element analysis by including sufficiently large width of foundation in the model and further by applying partial mode superposition. The finite element analysis turned out to be well agreeing with FD analysis in their computed results of the peak acceleration and the acceleration response spectra, especially at the surface layer.
Site response analysis is an important topic in earthquake engineering. A time-domain numerical method called as one-dimensional (1D) finite element artificial boundary method is proposed to simulate the homogeneous plane elastic wave propagation in a layered half space subjected to the obliquely incident plane body wave. In this method, an exact artificial boundary condition combining the absorbing boundary condition with the inputting boundary condition is developed to model the wave absorption and input effects of the truncated half space under layer system. The spatially two-dimensional (2D) problem consisting of the layer system with the artificial boundary condition is transformed equivalently into a 1D one along the vertical direction according to Snell's law. The resulting 1D problem is solved by the finite element method with a new explicit time integration algorithm. The 1D finite element artificial boundary method is verified by analyzing two engineering sites in time domain and by comparing with the frequency-domain transfer matrix method with fast Fourier transform.

Machine tool design concepts have evolved towards high efficiency, accurate precision. high structural integrity, and multi-functional systems. Like many other structures, machine tools are also composed of many parts. When these parts are assembled, many kinds of joints are used. In the finite element analysis of these assembled structures, most joints are commonly considered as rigid joints. But, to get the more accurate solution, we need to model these joints in a appropriate manner. In this study, rational dynamic modeling and analysis method for complex structures are studied with special attention to slide way joints. For modeling of slide way joints, a general modeling technique is used by influence coefficients method which is applied to the conversion of detailed finite element model to the equivalent reduced joint model. The theoretical part of this method is illustrated and the method is applied to the structure with slide way joint. The dynamic response characteristics of a rectangular fluid container are investigated by using finite element method. The fluid is assumed to be linear-elastic, inviscid and compressible. A displacement-based fluid finite element was employed to allow for the effects of the fluid. A typical rectangular fluid container, which is used in recent studies, is considered for the numerical analysis. The North-South component of El Centro Earthquake records is used as input ground acceleration. Rigid and flexible fluid containers solutions are obtained for the chosen sample tank. Hydrodynamic pressures and sloshing motions are determined using Lagrangian fluid finite element. The results obtained from this study are compared with the results obtained by boundary-finite element method (BEM-FEM) and requirements of Eurocode-8. Based on the numerical analysis, some conclusions and discussions on the design considerations for rectangular fluid containers are presented.
The goal of this study is to evaluate behavior uncertainties of structures by using interval finite element analysis based on interval factor method as a specific non-stochastic tool. The interval finite element method, i.e., interval FEM, is a finite element method that uses interval parameters in situations where it is not possible to get reliable probabilistic characteristics of the structure. The present method solves the uncertainty problems of a 2D solid structure, in which structural characteristics are assumed to be represented as interval parameters. An interval analysis method using interval factors is applied to obtain the solution. Numerical applications verify the intuitive effectiveness of the present method to investigate structural uncertainties such as displacement and stress without the application of probability theory.
In the present study, the axial vibration of the nanorods is investigated in the framework of the doublet mechanics theory. The equations of motion and boundary conditions of nanorods are derived by applying the Hamilton principle. A finite element method is developed to obtain the vibration frequencies of nanorods for different boundary conditions. A two-noded higher order rod finite element is used to solve the vibration problem. The natural frequencies of nanorods obtained with the present finite element analysis are validated by comparing the results of classical doublet mechanics and nonlocal strain gradient theories. The effects of rod length, mode number and boundary conditions on the axial vibration frequencies of nanorods are examined in detail. Mode shapes of the nanorods are presented for the different boundary conditions. It is shown that the doublet mechanics model can be used for the dynamic analysis of nanotubes, and the presented finite element formulation can be used for mechanical problems of rods with unavailable analytical solutions. These new results can also be used as references for the future studies.
This paper deals with the space-time finite element analysis of two-dimensional vibration problem with a single variable. The method of space-time finite elements enables the simpler solution than the usual finite element analysis with discretization in space only. We present a discretization technique in which finite element approximations are used in time and space simultaneously for a relatively large time period. The weighted residual process is used to formulate a finite element method for a space-time domain. A stability problem is described and some investigations for chosen type of rectangular space-time finite elements are carried out. Instability is caused by a too large time step of successive time steps in the traditional time-dependent problems. It has been shown that the numerical stability of time-stepping on the larger time steps is quite good. The unstructured space-time finite element not only overcomes the shortcomings of the stability in the traditional numerical methods, but it is also endowed with the features of an effective computational technique. Some numerical examples have been presented to illustrate the efficiency of the described method.
