  • In this research, an earthquake-resistant structural system consisting of a pin-connected steel frame and a bracing with metallic fuses is proposed. Contrary to the conventional braced frames, the main structural elements are deemed to remain elastic under earthquakes and the seismic energy is efficiently dissipated by the damper-braces with an amplification mechanism. The superiority of the proposed damping system lies in easy manufacture, high yield capacity and energy dissipation, and an effortless replacement of damaged fuses after earthquake events. Furthermore, the stiffness and the yield capacity are almost decoupled in the proposed damper-brace which makes it highly versatile for performance-based seismic design compared to most other dampers. A special attention is paid to derive the theoretical formulation for nonlinear behavior of the proposed damper-brace, which is verified using analytical results. Next, a direct displacement-based design procedure is provided for the proposed system and an example structure is designed and analyzed thoroughly to check its seismic performance. The results show that the proposed system designed with the provided procedure satisfies the given performance objective and can be used for developing highly efficient low-damage structures.

  • In this study, we introduce a sensing platform based on a plasmonic metasurface absorber (MA) with a vertical nanogap for the ultrasensitive detection of monolayer molecules. The vertical nanogap of the MA, where the extremely high near-field is uniformly distributed and exposed to the external environment, is formed by an under-cut structure between a metallic cross nanoantenna and the mirror layer. The accessible sensing area and the enhanced near-field of the MA further enhance the sensitivity of surface-enhanced infrared absorption for the target molecule of 1-octadecanethiol. To provide strong coupling between the molecular vibrations and plasmonic resonance, the design parameters of the MA with a vertical nanogap are numerically designed.

  • The strength of material is scattered owing to the inhomogenity of microstructure, in spite of the same material. Therefore, in order to design the mechanical structure with the reliability engineering, it is important to grasp the statistical nature of material strength. In this paper, effects of grain sezes for the statistical nature of the fatigue crack growth was discussed. And the statistical nature of mechanical properties was compared with the statistical nature of the fatigue crack growth rate.

  • Regarding some of the components of the Korean Tilting Train eXpress(TTX), the lightweight-vehicle development was mainly focused to this study, and so as using the materials, the existing material, steel or aluminum carbody was changed to the composite carbody with both design and manufacturing methods. Therefore the evaluation of the performance of joint strength between composite and metallic boundary area, especially the under frame and the carbody was required, and the compressive and the bending tests were conducted as the sub-scale specimen. In this evaluation, there was involved the sufficient strengths at the joint area between the underframe and the carbody, and is resulted as the increment of the safety factor through the observation of failure conditions.

  • The subject of this paper is the analysis of a Wire-TEM cell(W-TEM cell) which has an inner wire array rather than a metallic septum;its basic structure is similiar to a NBS TEM cell. To verify improved performances of this W-TEM cell as a standard EM field generator, well-known quasi-static approximations are employed and their resultant ingegral equations are numerically analyzed by moment method. Although the electric field strength of a W-TEM cell is 1.4 dB lower than tht of a NBS TEM cell, the uniformity of EM field patterns in a W-TEM cell is improved. It is also shown that the EM field distortions resulting from loading by the conditing objects under test(loading effects), are decreased considerably. This paper also deals with the investigations about relationship between the EM field distributions and the number of wire composing the inner conductor. Finally, the experimental analysis is performed on the practical model which is built on the basis of the design variables brought out by the theoretical andnumerical analysis.

  • This letter presents two types of metamaterial-inspired absorbers adopting resistive trumpet structures at the X band. The unit cell of the first type is composed of a trumpet-shaped resonator loading a chip resistor, a metallic back plane, and a FR4 (${\varepsilon}_r=4.4-j0.02$) substrate between them (single-layer). The absorption rate is 99.5% at 13.3 GHz. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 95 % at 11.2 GHz (from 5.9 to 16.5 GHz). The size of unit cell is $5.6{\times}5.6{\times}2.4mm^3$. The second type has been optimized with a $7{\Omega}$/square uniform resistive coating, removing the chip resistors but leading to results comparable to the first type. The proposed absorbers are almost insensitive to polarizations of incident waves due to symmetric geometry.

  • High Tech Design manner is a design concept that had been constantly discussed in constitution process of the West art history and modem ideology and had been experimented in industry, having started from futurism and structuralism in the early 20th century through Kinetic Art & Technology Art and up to now. High Tech Design had a great influence also on Post Modernism and more important is that this manner of design will be existing continually in the future too. From the modem times when machine civilization started, the artist and designers expressed a utopia will showing the future world with help of High Tech Design and modem people are realizing technology images as a utopia, in the space and material presented by this high tech design. And this utopia imply the images of dynamic power, speed making a voyage in universe, dream of future, hope, mass production, earth's environment, wealth etc. High Tech furniture was lightly designed by using thin steel wire, structure stressing the metallic characteristic and tempered glass, and it was used for presenting a convenient interior space visually, and with that it can make a unified sense in High Tech interior space, and a contrary effect compared with minimal space. High Tech Design equipped with glass and metal materials looking inappropriate for our interior space due to their sharp and cold image has been regularly used as living furniture, not only decoration function, and then there must be reasons for that. This study intends to research how High Tech Design has been changed and developed in the design history & West art history from the early 20th century, and to present it's value of development as data orienting, namely a direction for the industry of the next-generation and furniture design.

  • This paper proposed a method of broadband method of dual polarized dipole antenna for 700 MHz band base station. The proposed antenna has a structure that PCB feeder is mounted on the metallic radiator. The design of radiator and feeder is optimized by using 3D EM simulation. The proposed antenna(bandwidth 31.6 %) is broadened over 12.2 % through the lower frequency band than reference antenna(bandwidth 19.4 %), however the size is not increased. Measured results of S-parameters, radiation patterns, and gain have a good agreement with simulation ones.

  • This paper presents the performance of a planar, low-profile, and wide-gain-bandwidth leaky-wave slit antenna in different thickness values of high-permittivity gallium arsenide substrates at terahertz frequencies. The proposed antenna designs consisted of a periodic array of $5{\times}5$ metallic square patches and a planar feeding structure. The patch array was printed on the top side of the substrate, and the feeding structure, which is an open-ended leaky-wave slot line, was etched on the bottom side of the substrate. The antenna performed as a Fabry-Perot cavity antenna at high thickness levels ($H=160{\mu}m$ and $H=80{\mu}m$), thus exhibiting high gain but a narrow gain bandwidth. At low thickness levels ($H=40{\mu}m$ and $H=20{\mu}m$), it performed as a metasurface antenna and showed wide-gain-bandwidth characteristics with a low gain value. Aside from the advantage of achieving useful characteristics for different antennas by just changing the substrate thickness, the proposed antenna design exhibited a low profile, easy integration into circuit boards, and excellent low-cost mass production suitability.

  • Unlike metallic materials, the importance of fatigue performance of concrete has been ignored. However, it is reported that environmental effects, if it cause deterioration, may increase the risk of fatigue failure under repeated loadings. In case of railroad bridges, the risk may increase due to highly periodic, repetitive, heavier nature of train load, which runs through the fixed passage called the track. Especially, when new material or structure is implemented for a main bridge member, experimental validation should be performed to avoid damage or failure due to unexpected behavior. In this paper, the fatigue performance of an IT girder is examined via a repeated loading test. The IT girder is a new type of a prestressed concrete (PSC) girder with two prestressed H-beams in the top of the girder, which provide additional sectional capacity, and it can be applied to the span longer than 30m which is a typical limit for a usual PSC girder. To obtain the fatigue performance, a 10m IT girder specimen is designed, and a repeated load test is performed by applying the cyclic load two million times. The fatigue performance of the girder is examined according to the Japanese and the CEB-FIB design codes. The fatigue test result shows that the IT girder satisfies both design codes.
