  • Thin film composite (TFC) polyamide membranes were prepared on polysulfone (PSF) supports for forward osmosis (FO) applications. To understand the influence of polarity and porosity of support layer on the formation of polyamide structure and the final FO performance, clathochelate metal complex (MC) contained PSF supports were prepared via the phase inversion process from various PSF casting solutions containing 0.1-0.5 wt% of MC in dimethyl formamide (DMF) solvent (18 wt%). A crosslinked aromatic polyamide layer was then fabricated on top of each support to form a TFC membrane. For the porous PSF supports prepared with relatively low concentration casting solutions (12 wt%), the PET film was removed after phase inversion and crosslinked aromatic polyamide layer was then fabricated. The tested sample from PSF (18 wt%)/MC (0.5 wt%) casting solution presented outstanding FO performance, almost similar water flux (9.99 LMH) with lower reverse salt flux (RSF, 0.77 GMH) compared to commercial HTI FO membrane(10.97 LMH of flux and 2.2 GMH of RSF). By addition of MC in casting solution, the thickness of the active layer in FO membranes was reduced, however, the increased RSF value was obtained.

  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are nanoporous materials that consist of organic and inorganic moieties, with well-defined crystalline lattices and pore structures. With a judicious choice of organic linkers present in the MOFs with different sizes and chemical groups, MOFs exhibit a wide variety of pore sizes and chemical/physical properties. This makes MOFs extremely attractive as novel membrane materials for gas separation applications. However, the synthesis of high-quality MOF thin films and membranes is quite challenging due to difficulties in controlling the heterogeneous nucleation/growth and achieving strong attachment of films on porous supports. Microwave-based synthesis technology has made tremendous progress in the last two decades and has been utilized to overcome some of these challenges associated with MOF membrane fabrication. The advantages of microwaves as opposed to conventional synthesis techniques for MOFs include shorter synthesis times, ability to achieve unique and complex structures and crystal size reductions. Here, we review the recent progress on the synthesis of MOF thin films and membranes with an emphasis on how microwaves have been utilized in the synthesis, improved properties achieved and gas separation performance of these films and membranes.

  • When reformer for fuel cell is used, CO in hydrogen gas leads to a seriously decreased membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance by catalyst poisoning. The effect of CO on performance of modified MEA by sputtering method is studied in this paper. The experimental results show that sputtered Pt and Ru thin film improve a single cell performance of MEA and sputtered metal thin film has a CO tolerance. The air injection process on anode show improved CO tolerance test result. Moreover, Pt, Ru and PtRu thin film by sputtering had influence on the CO tolerance with air injection process.

  • Chitin, which is obtained mainly from the cuticle of a marine crustacean, has recently aroused great interest in its industrial and biomedical applications. Chitosan, deacetylated form of chitin, appears to be more useful for biomedical application and dehydration of aqueous solutions than chitin, since it has both hydroxyl and amino groups that can be modified easily. Amino groups on chitosan reacts with dialdehyde to form a Schiff base and then crosslinked, and can be easily neutralized with sulfuric acid and metal ions. Polyfunctional metal ions can form a metal-polyelectrolyte complexes with chitosan. Membranes used in modules so far working in industrial pervaporation plants are generally of composite type. This composite membrane was prepared by coating a porous polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane support of definite structure with a thin, dense layer of permselective chitosan. To apply industrial scale pervaporation process for dehydration of aqueous ethanol and isopropanol, chitosan composite membranes were prepared and tested at various conditions.

  • Dense oxygen ionic conducting materials can be used for oxygen separation membranes at high temperatures. However, they show relatively low permeation flux because of their large resistances. To reduce resistances and improve the oxygen permeation flux, thin dense yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ)/Pd composite dual-phase membranes were fabricated by a new approach that combines the reservoir method and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). A thin porous YSZ layer was coated on a porous alumina support by dip-coating the YSZ suspension. A continuous Pd phase was formed inside pores of the YSZ layer by the reservoir method. The residual pores of the YSZ/Pd layer were plugged with yttria/zirconia by CVD to ensure the gas tightness of the membranes. The oxygen permeation fluxes through these composite membrane were 2.0$\times$10$^{-8}$ mol/cm$^2$.s and 4.8$\times$10$^{-8}$ mol/cm$^2$.s at 105$0^{\circ}C$ when air and oxygen were used as the permeate gases, respectively. These oxygen permeation values are about 1 order of magnitude higher than those of pure YSZ membranes prepared under similar conditions.

  • Pd-ceramic composite membranes and catalytic membrane reactors(CMR) have been studied for hydrogen purification and recovery in th fusion reactor fuel cycle. The development of techniques for coating microporous ceramic tubes with Pd and Pd/Ag layers is described: composite membranes have been produced by electroless deposition (Pd/Ag film of 10-20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and rolling of thin metal sheet (Pd and Pd/ Ag membranes of 50-70 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Experimental results on electroless membranes showed that the metallic film presented some defects and the membranes had not complete hydrogen selectivity . Then the catalytic membrane reactors with electroless membranes can be applied for some industrial processes that do not require a complete separation of the hydrogen (i.e. in the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons). The rolled thin Pd/Ag membranes separated the hydrogen from the other gas with a complete selectivity and exhibited a slightly larger (about a factor 1.7) mass transfer resistance with respect to the electroless membranes. Experimental tests confirmed the good performances in terms of durability.

  • V-Cr-Y alloy is a material for hydrogen separation membrane possessing high transmittance and selectivity. In order to increase the rate of hydrogen permeation flux through the membrane, V-Cr-Y thin film was prepared using a sputtering technique and was investigated focusing on its basic properties. Thin film was deposited on a silicon wafer using a target including V (89.8%), Cr (10.0%) and Y(0.2%), and results of EDS analysis confirm that the ratio of metal in thin film agrees with that in the target. Higher sputtering temperature and power resulted in more rapid growth rate of the thin film and larger size of the crystals, and denser and finer crystal structure was observed when lower pressure was applied. An optimal sputtering condition was found with RF, 2mTorr, 300W and ambient temperature, and a suitable V-Cr-Y thin film for hydrogen separation was obtained upon heat treatment of the thin film prepared in this way.

  • An alumina membrane with nano-sized pore array by anodic oxidation using the thin film aluminum deposited on silicon wafer was fabricated. It Is important that the sample prepared by metal deposition method has a flat aluminum surface and a good adhesion between the silicon wafer and the thin film aluminum. The oxidation time was controlled by observation of current variation. While the oxalic acid with 0.2 M was used for low voltage anodization under 100 V, the chromic acid with 0.1 M was used for high voltage anodization over 100 V. The nano-sized pores with diameter of $60\~120$ nm was obtained by low voltage anodization of $40\~80$ V and those of $200\~300$ nm was obtained by high voltage anodization of $140\~200$ V. The pore widening process was employed for obtaining the one-channel with flat surface because the pores of the alumina membrane prepared by the fixed voltage method shows the structure of two-channel with rough surface. Finally, the sample was immersed to the phosphoric acid with 0.1 M concentration to etching the barrier layer.

  • The multi-films of a metallic film and a transparent conducting oxide (TCO, indium-tin oxide, ITO) film were formed on the stainless steel 316 and 304 plates by a sputtering method and an E-beam method and then the external metallic region of the stainless steel bipolar plates was converted into the metal nitride films through an annealing process. The multi-film formed on the stainless steel bipolar plates showed the XRD patterns of the typical indium-tin oxide, the metallic phase and the metal substrate and the external nitride film. The XRD pattern of the thin film on the bipolar plates modified showed two metal nitride phases of CrN and $Cr_2N$ compound. Surface microstructural morphology of the multi-film deposited bipolar plates was observed by AFM and FE-SEM. The metal nitride film formed on the stainless steel bipolar plates represented a microstructural morphology of fine columnar grains with 10 nm diameter and 60nm length in FE-SEM images. The electrical resistivity of the stainless steel bipolar plates modified was evaluated.
